You may be able to generate a report of the desired business category; save that as a comma delimited file. (.csv)
Then use Moneydance's built-in importer to import the .csv file into the Business MD file.

There is also a free, third-party CSV importer designed exclusively for Moneydance that may help. If you want to look into it, let me know, I'll dig up the link to it.

Naturally, you should experiment with this whole process on a separate copy of your data file(s).

Another - perhaps convoluted method - might be to create a new temporary account to move the transactions to in your personal file, sort by category, multi-select the transactions, and then right-click Batch Change | Account to move these transactions to the temporary account, and then QIF export and import that temporary account if you want the transactions in another file. If you just want them in another account in the same file, then "sort by category, multi-select, batch-change | account" might do what you want?

tgilbert666tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480066322020-01-15T00:08:53Z2020-01-15T00:08:55ZExport / Import Between Files

"report of the desired business category; save that as a comma delimited file.
Thanks, I found the "Transactions" report that had the "Save" option for CSV.

I can also select account or category there, so that's a win. Importing the CSV is a little tricky, but it came across fine.

Now to figure out how to keep tags with the categories. Sigh.

Thanks, Kevin!

PS. Thanks also to tgilbert. This is a one time deal and quicker is better!

Paul Lawrencetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480066322020-01-15T02:47:59Z2020-01-15T02:47:59ZExport / Import Between Files

Hi Paul,

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that you were able to make it work.

Thank you for reporting back with your results.

Ideally, what I'm looking for is to be able to add the tag filter, because these data items are further designate with three separate tags. So, the plan was to export three separate CSV files for the same category, but filtered by the tags.

Only thing is, when you add the tag filter to the report that is on a CATEGORY, all the data disappears. Yes, the tags are there and can be summarized exactly in the Tag Summary report.

The transaction report allows the filter for a CATEGORY, but it ALWAYS excludes everything! The "filter" works as expected for an ACCOUNT, so something is not explained.

Paul Lawrencetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480066322020-01-15T14:53:31Z2020-01-15T14:53:31ZExport / Import Between Files

Hi Paul,

It is my understanding that Tags applied to a transaction in an Account register are not applied to the corresponding 'other side' of the translation in the Category register. Hence, a report based on a Category, would not contain Tags.

Moneydance support generally steers users away from Category registers due to the somewhat backwards nature of the beasts. Changes made in Category registers can produce unexpected results.

As a means to apply multiple Tags to multiple transactions, try the 'Find and Replace' extension. Install the Find & Replace extension from the Extensions > Manage Extensions menu item.

For instructions on it's use, click the 'User Guide' link at the bottom of the extension (once installed) or here is a link to the user guide. http://www.mennesoft.com/findandreplace/index.html#usage
