Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Adding a security to an investment account simply makes that security available for use within that investment account. Technically adding a security to an investment account creates a sub account in the investment account priced in that security as a place to hold the number of shares in that security you own.

After you add a security to an investment account you need to enter a buy transaction to increase the number of shares you own. Go into the investment register and click the new transaction button. Set the type of the transaction to Buy.

This will reduce the amount of cash in the investment account to pay for the buy. If you are simply wanting to reflect pre-existing holdings you can set the initial cash balance of the investment account to cover these buys. To do this go into the investment account and select Edit Account from the Account menu.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.

I would add to Maddy's advice that you should create only 1 instance of any given security - regardless of how many investment accounts that security may be held in.

Have tried to do this but are unable to display a box where I can actually enter the 581 shares that I have and their current value. In the new transaction and changing it to ‘buy’ I am unsure as how to complete this.

Kind regards,

Investment accounts in Moneydance allow for 2 registers. One for investment activity. e.g. Buy, Sells, Dividends. The other for banking activity. e.g. writing checks.

Make sure that you are viewing the 'Register' and not the 'Bank Register'.

Look to the following KB article for more information on the various fields of the investment register.
