Merge downloaded Investment Transaction with one existing in register

I, too, see a need to be able to merge a downloaded investment transaction with one already in the register.
Or to at least delete or skip the downloaded one.
This seems to be a continuation of a discussion from 2021
(https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/6120-mer...) which was closed with (seemingly) no IK response. While I understand that there are many different file layouts supplied by Investment companies, there should be some way to present a user interface that allows one to specify where to put each piece of data - and to save that merge-plan as a basis for the next time.
Anyways... think about it.

    Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

You are correct, the automatic categorisation that applies to downloaded or imported transactions in bank, credit card, and other account types doesn't also apply to investment transactions. We have plans to improve this as well as to allow merging of likely duplicate investment transactions, but the support is currently pretty basic.

There is one thing that might provide a more immediate solution, which is to set the default category for your investment account. When viewing your investment account register, select the Account -> Edit menu, which will show the settings for your account, as in the attached screenshot. In this window you can choose a different "Default Category", and future transactions will have your selection for the category.

To more easily change the already-entered transactions, you can select a range of those transactions in the Bank Register by doing the following:

    1. click the first transaction you'd like to change

    2. shift-click the last transaction you'd like to change, which will select all of the transactions between the first and last

    3. Right-click (or control click) on the register and select the Batch Change -> Category menu, then select the category you'd like for the selected transactions

Hopefully this helps improve things in the short term, and we'll try to improve investment account categorisation in a future update

    Hi Maddy,
Thanks for the response. I'll try some of those options.

    What I'm experiencing, though, is
    1) Manually entered a transaction into the register ahead of the item being included in the download
    2) A few days later, the transaction is downloaded. The only option for it is to 'Confirm'
    a) confirm it and then delete it (so as to keep my manual entry). When I download again, it shows up again. b) confirm it, delete my manual entry, then go through the confirmed entry to change the field values. This doesn't seem to work out right for me - or i just don't know enough about investment fields to make it right.

It's not a huge deal for me, especially since now I have to manually enter Fidelity transactions. But J.P. Morgan accounts are mildly frustrating.
It would be nice to have an option to ignore a downloaded transaction so MD skips over it on next download.

If you delete the downloaded transaction then it will be attempted to be imported again, that is the expected behaviour in all cases.

However, if you are downloading OFX or QFX files these have a transaction ID embedded in them, this is what is used to prevent downloading again, so delete the downloaded transaction, and it will imported again, keep the downloaded transaction and delete the manual one, and it should not import again.

If you are downloading QIF files they have nothing in them that can identify duplicates, the only potential way around this is to use date based filtering, if the institution offers this, to determine what to download.

    dwg: Thanks for the input.
    * re deleting a downloaded transaction: yes I gathered that it would be downloaded again after seeing it happen, so I have come to expect it. I would expect, though, that it would be possible to 'ignore' a downloaded item so that future downloads would match against it and skip over it. OR: provide 'Merge' functionality (like on bank and credit card accounts) so the incoming record can be handled the same way.

As I said though, it's not a big deal: I'm retired so I have the time to manually enter or correct items. And, I have only a handful of accounts so there's not too much to do anyway.

As for downloading files (OFX, QFX, csv, or QIF) and importing: No. Haven't had great results doing that. Once bitten/twice shy.

I suppose If I really wanted to spend the time, I could
    - set up a 'buffer' Moneydance dataset/file,
    - import data into that
    - fiddle and tweak the data there
    - export the adjusted data
    - import into my real Moneydance dataset
But, for just a few accounts I think that'd be overkill.

Cheers and have a good weekend,
    Mark

The only way Moneydance can ignore a transaction is if it has a record of the ID and the IDs are kept in the transactions.

The only real long term solution is merge capability in Investment accounts, it has been long talked about, we did see it briefly start to be added in an alpha build a while back, but it was stripped out again, I am not sure why.

Investments in general, from the available actions forward, could do with more work to bring them up to standard, at the moment there are quite a lot of holes in the capability.

I understand that this is the was things currently are.

As you and Maddy have mentioned, merging Investment transactions has been on the table for a number of years now (at least 5).
I was "casting a vote", as it were, to getting this done. And as for application consistency, merging is the way to go. The hurdle seems to be the matching criteria to select candidates.

As for exclusions: well this could have some deeper ripples, but it's not hard: either:
    a) load the transaction into the normal table with a flag to indicate no-data/user-ignored
    c) build a table to store excluded IDs, and filter against that when downloading data

Application development is always interesting, but hopefully there's enough interest to work towards 'what could be' rather than working around 'what is'.

    Cheers!

Realized my solution this morning: I'll nullify/zero-out all data fields on unwanted downloaded record(s). I'll follow up later with what happens.

Changed the Action to MiscInc, zeroed the numbers and changed to memo field to "Void". Seems to work OK.
