I don't seem to be able to update my share prices.
Is there a simple solution?

Darren,
I would add the Security Price Entry extension to the list if you may have the need to enter one off prices at times.

I'm tracking < 20 stocks all listed on the TSX, I haven't run into the problem yet. Yahoo covers the TSX extensively.

I have a fund that is setup as a master trust, In other words it has investments in other wholesale funds and I select what funds and the amount of investment etc.
While I can get data from the investment house on the transactions made and also on the current unit price of each fund the structure is such that I would have to do an extensive amount of programming to try and get it structured on a way I could bring it into moneydance and even then I'm not convinced it would do it reliably.
As Moneydance does not have a way of handling investments with these sort of data availability issues - my old software Reckon did - the best solution was to come up with a unit price for the overall investment, I created a spreadsheet that does this and update it monthly, thus I use the Security price entry extension to enter this price (I have two investments like this)

Hi there - I am a regular person. I don't know how to program a computer. I use MD on the Mac platform. Can anyone give a step by step tutorial of how to access and use Mike Bray's extension as referenced above - for a regular person? Thanks.

I can load the csv file with the MikeB extension, but the stock price values are multiplied with the exchange rate Euro/USD (my base currency is Euro) and then posted to the security (see picture, Nov 29 price was loaded from csv which had the price as $US of 168.76). So in other words the quotes from the csv are assumed Euros instead of $US. Anyone an idea how to avoid this wrong translation?

We are probably all regular persons. This is not programming. It is using the tools provided. If you don't know anything about extensions then read about them in the help manual before proceeding with below info.
Go to the link provided by an earlier post in this topic. Download the file "securitypriceload.mxt". I believe that on a Mac it defaults to placing downloaded files into the Downloads folder (unless you changed it). Then open MD and choose the menu "Extensions" and "Manage Extensions" and then at the bottom is a dialog box "Add from File". Click on that and navigate to where ever you downloaded the file to (Downloads??). Select the securitypriceload.mxt and it should add it to the Extensions menu.
Now go to Yahoo (https://finance.yahoo.com/) and create a portfolio containing the securities you want to download prices for. I don't remember if you must sign in to Yahoo with an account or not. If you don't have a yahoo acct you might have to set one up.
After you create a portfolio, in the upper right of the yahoo screen are several choices, one being 'export'. Click on export and it will place a file 'quotes.csv' in your default downloads folder (Downloads??).
Then go to MD and click on Extensions -> Security Price Loader.
The first time you do this you might have to make some configuration settings.
Point "Security Price Loader" to your quotes.csv and push the right buttons and when you see the securities listed, it will have as a minimum the security symbol and the date. Note that the date will be displayed as DD/MM/YYYY and this does not matter, don't change it (I did the first time - big mistake).
At the very bottom of the list of your portfolio securities is a check box all by itself. Check that to select all in your list and choose 'Save Selected Values'. Now your MD securities are updated.
Before you do the above, I'd have a backup of your MD files and know how to restore them.
Most of the above written from memory and not specifically tested click by click. So my apologies in advance if something is unclear or simply wrong.
Ohh....one other suggestion. Consider selecting only one security from the list of securities to update. Then if there is something wrong, you can very easily delete the info rather than restoring a backup or manually deleting lots of data. Then verify that the data you selected was properly updated.
Good luck.

I have just tried this successfully with one of my securities.
Yes you do need a Yahoo account. I had a portfolio set up already from when I had to manually fill figures into Quicken.
Read mike bray's Wiki as it steps through the process.
It worked, but only after I had changed the Security code in Moneydance to match Yahoo. In this particular instance it was Aviva, which previously only worked using AV as the code, but I had to change it to reflect the stock exchange as well, i.e. AV.L
To get to that, you have to go into the security history from within investment account, and then click on edit.
AN EASIER WAY Download the Extra Investment Reports v201 Dale Furrow from where you can check the information, and double click to get to the stock to update it.
My task now is to go through all of the securities as listed on the Yahoo export to ensure that the ticker symbol is what is shown in MD. Check the next post - this wasn't necessary.
Then I have to look at the multiplier, which has been a real issue in the past using the inbuilt extensions updater. I may need to set up a few portfolios as the importer only allows one multiplier per FILE.

I am not support staff just a user.
In the Security Price Loader you can tick the box “Remove Exchange From Ticker?” which will remove “.” and anything that follows turning AV.L into AV
Save you adding “.L” to the relevant Securities.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Derek
I had just returned to this page to say that very thing!
Unfortunately I spotted it only after adding .L to everything that needed it. If only I'd seen your post sooner.
I am now pondering what to do with one CHF and one USD price, as they do NOT need to be set on -2 for decimal places. Probably enter them manually.

There is a third party tool in the beta stage which you enter your ticker symbols into a list and it returns the current Quote Prices. Once entered they are remembered for the next time. This is great for me as I hold mainly UK funds that are in the main not supported by Yahoo. You can then export as a QIF file containing all the prices. The developer is about to release an update at my request that will allow exporting in the current QIF format as well as adding the CSV format that the Security Price loader can use. The only thing is you to need to have java loaded on your computer, as it is a java program. But that was not a problem. If you are interested post and I will post a link and some how to get started instructions.
EDIT update released you can now export in CSV format!!
Hope this helps

yes, i just managed to set it up also. irritating that for two securities out of 37, the multiplier is different, but you can either remove these from the upload and/or set up a separate portfolio with a different multiplier. It does work and not too difficult to set up, but would be great if IK could come up with something automated.

There is a beta version of the Q & ER extension out from Sean the lead software developer which uses Alpha Vantage instead of Yahoo. Remove the old extension and install the new one. Make sure it ends in “.mxt” not “.zip after you download it. Edit zip if required. You must also be running the latest preview build of 2017 downloaded from https://infinitekind.com/preview
You will be asked to get and enter an Alpha Vantage Key when you first open the extension.
Hope this helps

I am not support staff, just a user.
Forgot to add the link to the new beta Q & ER. See last post for information on How To and Download from https://infinitekind.com/tmp/yahooqt.mxt
Hope this helps

Thanks. Anything that makes the process more automated is much appreciated!
I have several UK funds and originally it was a case of identifying their ticker symbols elsewhere, because Yahoo was dreadful at finding them from their name. My ISA provider doesn't specify the ticker on their half-yearly report so I had to check purchase notes or ask.
The USD ones I have to exclude when importing initially, then do the import again but selecting only them, and changing the multiplier to 0 (from -2). They came from a takeover, and have b-all value so this is a good trigger to sell them.
The CHF one is, I have now realised, obsolete as the fund was moved to a GBP quoted one.
Thankfully I only have one not supported by Yahoo, but it is supported by Morningstar so I have for years updated it manually. Prior to finding Morningstar, I had a saved link to the fund web page.
I do like that Mike Bray's Yahoo one imports exchange rates as well.
There is also user Jim Kuhn posting here about a new script of his.
I regret to say I have never heard of this Alpha Vantage before. Will have a look tomorrow.

I have installed the new Quotes and Exchange Rates Updater. My download of stock prices worked like a champ. I will add that Firefox 57 will not work to get a key from Alpha Advantage. It just redisplays the page. Chrome works fine though.
