I am not support staff, just a user.

I am a UK investor and have found that Alpha Vantage provide very poor support for UK/Irish/Luxenberg etc, domiciled funds.
I am currently testing a stand-alone program that was originally developed to help out users of MS Money when Microsoft stopped supporting that product. The developer is in the beta stages of adapting it to work with Moneydance. When I say beta, this build as far as I can see is very stable and the quotes very consistent. No strange prices or for UK funds switching back and forward between Pence and Pounds. It has a lot of useful features. These include, obtaining prices from many stocks and fund quoted on different exchanges. The ability to convert quotes from one currency to another. Convert prices in Pence to Pounds, if required, for UK stocks and funds. Provide a means for importing all this data into Moneydance. Importing exchange rates.

Anyway, download the attached PDF, use the links to download the programs and follow the instructions on how to use.

Please keep this thread to this subject on how to use the program, hleofxquotes in association Mike Brays Security Price Loader and how to import the data into Moneydance.

Please provide feedback on how well UK, Mainland Europe, USA and Canadian stocks and funds are covered.

Hope this helps.

    HI hleofxquotes

    That works great!

On your example “If we have BCH-EUR, EURUSD=X, USDGPB=X and base rate is GBP, we will generate BCDGPB=X” shouldn’t GBPEUR=X be included. Also maybe a typo BCDGBP=X be BCHGBP=X?

    Hi again,

I have been using hleofxquotes very successfully for several months now. It has worked very well, until recently. I usually update weekly, and my latest .qif file was not successful in updating my MD file. None of my stocks uploaded, but my unit trusts did! I'm totally confused, since I have done nothing different. Any thoughts would be gratefully received!

    Thanks in advance,

    Neil

    Hi Neil

Can you confirm your computers operating system?
Which build of Moneydance are you running, see under HELP – ABOUT MONEYDANCE e.g. 2017.7.1(1671).
Have updated Moneydance since your last successful QIF import?
Which build of hleofxquotes you are using?
Can you post your QIF file?
Can you indicate which symbols loaded prices or didn’t load prices which ever is the shortest list?
Can you confirm this is the first time this has happened?
On the day you tried to load the QIF file or the day before did you open the affected security price history window.
Did you import a QIF within three days of your import attempt?
Did any of the prices in the QIF file have the same date at a price in its associated security price history window?

Let’s see if any of your answers throw up any pointers to the problem.

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for responding so quickly. My OS is Widows 7, MD version = 2017.6.(1656), Hleofxquotes 0180103_172. The only securities to update were the funds - starting "GB". All the other shares did not update, and this was the first problem I have run into since January . I made the qif file, and imported almost immediately. However, I did open quite a few of the security price history windows, since I have been away and wanted to check if they were up to date. Perhaps this could be the cause of the problem?

I have just tried loading this same QIF file into a copy of my MD file I made back in January. It seemed to work perfectly, so I guess the qif file is fine.

    Thanks again,

Make a FILE – EXPORT BACKUP.

First, I would update Moneydance to the latest release build 2017.7.1(1671) from https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software

Also update Hleofxquotes Program to build 206. Download the latest PDF from http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/investments/3036-third-par...

And use the link in the PDF to download Hleofxquotes Program.

It’s a got idea to keep your software up to date.

It could be the fact that you opened the Security Price History window of the subject securities. There are some Moneydance rules that prevent QIF imports if the software thinks a security has been updated on the same day as the date in the QIF file.

By the way you should be able to post your QIF file on the forum. I presume you tried to attach it to an email.

Anyway, I have taken your list of data and turned it into a CSV file. Hope the list you posted was the full list. If not post your QIF file on the forum in this thread http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/investments/3036-third-par...

Used Mike Brays Security History Loader to import the CSV file into Moneydance and your price history should be back as it should be. Link to Mikes Download site is in the PDF as is how to use his extension. I prefer this method over using a QIF file.

I set up the first 4 of your securities in Moneydance just using the Symbol as the security name and tested using Mikes extension. See screen shot. Imported with no problems.

If you have any problems please post and, in any event, let me know how you get on.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your thoughts and comments. I'm just about to go away on a business trip, but will update the software as you suggest, and will also give Mike Bray's uploader a go when I have a little time.
In the meantime, I have just generated a new .qif file. Nothing is uploaded into my MD file, although all securities are imported successfully into my January copy! I fear my MD file could be corrupted?
    Thanks again,
I'll be in touch when I have a little more time to carry out some of your suggestions.

    Hi Neil

Hopefully you followed the instructions in the PDF to make a EXPORT – BACKUP before importing a QIF file or have a more resent set of backups. If you have auto backup set under FILE – PREFERENCES -BACKUPS put a large number in the “keep no more than” box so as not to lose older auto backups.

    NEW BUILD RELEASE “Build_20180512_207”

To receive Email updates on this thread, ensure the box at top right of page has been set to SUBSCRIBE.

This free stand-alone program was originally developed to help out users of MS Money when Microsoft stopped supporting that product. The developer has adapted it to work with Moneydance and is actively supporting the program. This build, is very stable and the quotes very consistent with the option of two sources, not Alpha Vantage. No strange prices. The program delivers the last traded price, not a price history, thus it does not overwrite your existing history. It provides quote for stocks & funds, from many stock exchanges US, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia to name but a few. Provide a means for importing all this data into Moneydance. You can also import exchange rates along with your security prices. The program is in java, like Moneydance and thus runs on Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

    UPDATES
    1. In the program a selection has been added under EDIT – EXPORT – SET MD CSV INCLUDE QUITE SOURCE NAME. TRUE results in the exported name of the CSV file containing the quote source. Two different files are exported. FALSE results in only one file name being used that does not include quite source name. Be careful export from one source will overwrite an export from the other source if the same save location is used.
    2. The Program has been updated to handle Cryptocurrencies in a new way expanding the range of cryptocurrencies that can be downloaded and imported into Moneydance.

Download the attached updated PDF, use the links to download the programs and follow the instructions on how to use.

If you are using Mike Brays extensions you must also run the latest build of the Security Price Loader and/or Security History Loader extensions, see PDF for link.

You must also update to at least the latest released build of Moneydance 2017 at https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software to ensure compatibility.

Also attached is a second PDF that covers the creation and importing of Cryptocurrencies and Market Indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, FTSE 100 and Canadian S&P/TSX into Moneydance.
NOTE PDF “Hleofxquotes Program used with Moneydance Cryptocurrencies and Market Indices V3” has been updated in post 194.

Please keep this thread to this subject on how to use the program, hleofxquotes in association Mike Brays Security Price Loader and how to import the data into Moneydance.

Please try this program and if you find it useful please take the time to post comments and outline any problems you may find.

Please provide feedback on how well UK, Mainland Europe, USA, Canadian, Australian and other stocks and funds are covered.

    Hope this helps.

Note: the link in the PDF takes you to the programmer, hleofxquotes, development site. This site lists the current released build for download, along with a number of other folders. The folder “old” contains old released builds. The folder “test” contains builds under development that are not ready for release and may contain bugs.

Works for me! I used Mike Bray's Security Uploader extension on my Mac, and the Yahoo source for the hleofxquotes to create the MD CSV file (the FT gave me one incorrect security). Initially, the instructions looked overwhelming, but I found them to be just overly detailed for my purposes. Using this method has proven to be faster than waiting for the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension to plow through my 45 holdings.

    Hi Derek,

Please let me apologise for the delay in getting back to you. May evaporated due to a combination of holidays, a business trip and family issues. I'm hoping that my problems are now solved, but would like to explain what I think went wrong with almost none of my securities updating, but funds/oeics presenting no problem.
I updated all the software as you suggested, then downloaded Mike Bray's Security Price Loader as recommended. All the quotes were successfully exported from the HleOfxquotes software as a .csv. However when I tried to import them into MD, the problem became apparent. The ".L" had been lost from the tickers in MD! Since the funds do not have this suffix, they presented no problem. Once I had edited all the tickers back to where they were, import occurred perfectly. I cannot think why this should have happened, but I suppose the reasons are totally academic now. The important thing is that I am now using the recommended extension and not the QIF method, and have carried out 5 updates on separate days after the markets have closed - no problems whatsoever.
Just one thought, and I'm not certain if this is the correct thread or not. Going back to the days late last year/early this year I had used Alphavantage. That made a real mess of some of my share price histories, with all sorts of odd data being inserted. Do you know the best place to get historical price data? I have used Yahoo, but often the data is incomplete or even inaccurate. Any thoughts would be most welcome!
Thanks again for all your help - greatly appreciated.
    Best regards
    Neil

    Hi Neil

There are a number of sites that still provide this information for
free. Yahoo finance will provide a limited range (3 months is the max,
if I remember. NASDAQ is always helpful, and of course, lphavantage, (if
    you can read their documentation!).

The tricky part will be the importing into Moneydance. Each security is
downloaded as a separate file and each must be imported separately. The
headers for the csv must be exactly (including case) like it is in the
documentation or else it will not import.

You will need to got to each securty, click on Security Details, and
then History. A button on the right is "import". Select the import from
file. The screen will also provide the key words used for the headers.
And when you are ready, select "Import".

Just a word of caution...while this has never failed me as part of
process, having to do this multiple times, sometimes gets confusing as
to which file belongs to which security, so taking consistent set of
    backup is highly recommended!

    Hi Neil.

I was wondering how you were getting on, so thanks for the feedback.

I have not heard of symbols in Moneydance losing their exchange suffix, in your case “.L”. Very strange. I wonder if using QIF import coursed the change or was just the first effect to be noticed. If the “.L’s” had gone missing before you did a QIF import, as you have found out before, if the symbols do not match the symbols in Moneydance you don’t get a warning, the price simply does not update.

Anyway, I am glade you were able to troubleshoot the problem and get back to normal.

As for obtaining historical data it’s not something I have looked at. Sprimost has posted some good pointers. If you can find a source that provides data in a CSV format then if they are one file per security I would be tempted to use a spread sheet to merge them into one CSV file, under one set of headings and then import the whole lot in one go using Mike Brays Security History Loader. Always take a backup first in case something goes wrong.

Let us know how you get on.

If you could do the following:

    1. Start MD
    2. Select the Security Price Loader
    3. Either load file or choose a file to select your file
    4. Select the fields where your data is
    5. Select Process Currencies
    6. Click on Load Data

If nothing happens then there us normally a Java exception which is shown in the Console log.

One last question, what is your base currency?

I will look at this tomorrow (GMT).

    Base currency is US$

Many thanks for your help. My first impression is that this process will be more dependable than the Q&E extension using Alphavantage.

I am not support staff just a user.

    Hi Tony.

Mike as the developer of the Security Price Loader Extension is the expert on this one, but I would be interesting to know if you get the same problem with Mikes Security History Loader. As always do a FILE – EXPORT BACKUP first.

In your MOV post, with process currency box unticked, the second window opens but the area which should show the imported data is just a blank white screen or it is when I play it back. What do you actually see and can you confirm you can import the data.

    Thanks
