Hi David

I don’t track commodity prices but there may be a way.

To check I am on the right track can you list a number of commodities, e.g. gold, silver etc and the prices you would expect to see so I can tell what I am finding is what you are looking for.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484793322020-07-22T18:03:30Z2020-07-22T18:03:30ZAnybody found a way of tracking precious metals bullion prices using "Quotes and Exchange Rates" plugin?

Hi Derek,

I'm personally just interested in gold and silver. A good site to see current spot prices is https://www.jmbullion.com and look below the blue menu bar. For example as of this writing I'm seeing $1868.10 USD for gold and $22.86 USD for silver. Thanks in advance if you figure it out!

Hi David.
The Quote Loader third party extension seems to be what you are looking for.
I did a quick search for ticker symbols for Gold and Silver plus some other commodities and the prices returned seemed to match your examples, see screen shot.
For information see post 63 at

Download the PDF attached to posts 63 and have a read.

To get an overview take a look at the YouTube videos by using the links on page 1 and 2 of the PDF.

Let us know how you get on or if you need help just post.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484793322020-07-22T18:30:03Z2020-07-22T18:30:03ZAnybody found a way of tracking precious metals bullion prices using "Quotes and Exchange Rates" plugin?

Hi Derek,

I'll give it a spin, props for actually writing documentation for it!

2 questions before I make a backup and begin:
- does the extension co-exist with "Quotes and Exchange Rates" or should I uninstall first? - should I set the commodities as currencies or as securities for them to get quotes?

Thanks,

Hi David.

Most people find that once they start using Quote Loader they don't need "Quotes and Exchange Rates" but they should co-exist.

Set commodities up as Securities, using the tickers in the screen shot.
I would suggest using the source Yahoo or Yahoo HD is you want historical data.

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484793322020-07-23T19:51:57Z2020-07-23T19:51:57ZAnybody found a way of tracking precious metals bullion prices using "Quotes and Exchange Rates" plugin?

That's a great plugin, thank you to you and Mike Bray for all the hard work that went into it. I have it updating manually, will see if it auto runs tomorrow.

By any chance is there a way of getting prices on options? I would have never thought to ask before seeing how limited the "Quotes and Exchange Rates" plugin is, but thought it might be worth asking. If so then what is the naming format for an option?

Thank you again!

david_nedvedtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484793322020-07-23T20:45:43Z2020-07-23T20:45:43ZAnybody found a way of tracking precious metals bullion prices using "Quotes and Exchange Rates" plugin?

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi David

Glad you are finding Quote Loader useful.

I doubt either Yahoo or FT support options, but then until I checked I did not know they supported commodities. Quote Loader can only return prices if these sources provide prices on their web pages.
Page 6 of PDF has a link to the two web sites. If you can find data on these sites it may be possible to return prices.

Let us know how you get on.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484793322020-07-26T13:37:43Z2020-07-26T13:37:43ZAnybody found a way of tracking precious metals bullion prices using "Quotes and Exchange Rates" plugin?

Well, Yahoo actually does report option prices and the plug-in takes them. Fantastic coding to work on a data set not tested against!

Now it isn’t actually helpful to me, for both a Moneydance and brokerage reason:

Yahoo reports options prices on a per-share basis (the way they are often talked about in the abstract). My brokerage reports via OFX transactions on a per-contract basis (the way they are actually traded), thus 100x the per-share cost. Neither approach is “wrong”, they just aren’t compatible.

This doesn’t even come into play however because I typically sell options, don’t buy them. Thus I begin with a “sell to open” order, essentially going short with a negative transaction. Moneydance seems to ignore negative share counts, thus it doesn’t seem to show any debit at all to offset the credit for the money I receive for selling the contract. Not a big deal but something the devs should probably address at some point.

Anyway, you’ve really helped me by pointing me to this most excellent plug-in. Thank you so much, I am once again totally in love with Moneydance (and for a relationship that’s been going on since 2006 that’s saying something).

Hi David

Is there never an end to all the wonderful things you can do with Quote Loader.
