Are there any known problems with the cash balance calculations in investment accounts?

I am trying to reconcile my Moneydance transaction register with my broker's statements, and am finding multiple places where Moneydance just doesn't subtract correctly. Example:

Cash balance – 370,233.13
Purchase – 22,779.54
Correct result – 347,453.59
Moneydance balance – 347,452.81

Obviously, an error of 0.78 isn't going to matter in the grand scheme of things – but still, I would expect the program to be able to do basic math. :-)

Any ideas?

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-07-25T19:57:57Z2020-07-25T19:57:57ZCash balance incorrect

Extra information -- After doing some more spreadsheet work, I found that Moneydance subtracted incorrectly on every other transaction for a series of seven transactions, always subtracting too much, as follows:

#1 – off by 0.78 #2 – correct #3 – off by 0.39 #4 – correct #5 – off by 0.78 #6 – correct #7 – off by 0.39

The resulting 2.34 was the difference between the ending Moneydance cash balance and my broker's ending cash balance.

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-01T18:11:16Z2020-08-01T18:11:16ZCash balance incorrect

I'm a little surprised that this hasn't gotten any attention from support staff. A bookkeeping app that doesn't subtract properly seems, uhm, problematic.

Thoughts?

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T03:13:34Z2020-08-03T03:27:47ZCash balance incorrect

just a user here.
I'm sure you are being a little facetious in saying moneydance can't subtract correctly, but obviously you want a solution to the problem.

I'm assuming you are getting the values downloaded via direct connect, right? If so, have you examined that file to see what your brokerage is telling moneydance? as you point out, the values are small, so maybe the OFX values have a rounding problem from the brokerage?

I DO NOT know the answer, just that the problem is not "inaccurate subtraction", but more like values provided are rounded at the last decimal place or something else, but similar.

I do expect that support staff should get back to you. Sometimes messages do get missed on weekends.

Hope that at least provides some direction on where the inaccuracies might be coming from.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T03:20:04Z2020-08-03T03:20:04ZCash balance incorrect

I do find it interesting (but not revelatory) that all the inaccuracies are either 0, .39, or .78 which is off, in a sense, by "0, 1, or 2" (with .39 being indicative)

I have no idea what that means, but did find it interesting.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T20:41:37Z2020-08-03T20:41:37ZCash balance incorrect

Not using OFX. This is a direct download from the brokerage.

However, I have re-entered those transactions manually, and still gotten that result.

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T21:14:15Z2020-08-03T21:14:15ZCash balance incorrect

just a user here.

Great. So, let's start with the incorrect subtraction issue - as I don't want to deny it.
Can you show register entries showing the values are exactly as they should be, but the result is a .39 or .78 subtraction discrepancy? Would like to see such (and I'm sure support staff would as well)

Or is the cash value of the transaction in the register also off by .39 or .78 and thus so is the cash balance?

If the former - you've found a big deal (though why no one else has seen it is odd).

If the latter, let's move on to the transaction itself. It's probably some type of transaction like a stock sale, or something involving shares of some sort. (right? wrong?) Like let's say stock interest which is 0.1372 shares added to your account, with a value of X. But maybe if you multiply 0.1372 shares by the value of the shares, it is off by 0.39 ? Maybe it should be 0.13721 ?

Again, I don't know, nor have a clue - just trying to provide some insight, as I am very detailed oriented, and have had to fix errors as small as 0.03 ... due to multiple reasons over 35 years.

Hope that helps some.
(If you have distinct evidence showing MD can't subtract, a screen shot would help support staff, I'm sure)

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T21:39:57Z2020-08-03T21:39:57ZCash balance incorrect

I have attached a screen shot showing what I'm talking about. I went back to my brokerage statement and none of the transactions had fractions of cents.

The 909 shares at 25.06 is where the problem starts.

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T22:28:52Z2020-08-03T22:28:52ZCash balance incorrect

Fantastic. That indeed looks problematic.

At this point, I also turn this over to MD support staff and look forward to reading their response as well.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T23:01:08Z2020-08-03T23:01:08ZCash balance incorrect

I'm a fellow user.

I've tried it, and I cannot reproduce the problem. I have also never seen a case where Moneydance can not add or subtract properly. I can only come to the conclusion that there is something occurring in your data set, as to what that has me baffled.

This is something hat I think has to go through the support people.

On a thought is it the same security that always shows the problem?

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-03T23:30:55Z2020-08-03T23:30:55ZCash balance incorrect

No, different securities.

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-08T18:20:22Z2020-08-08T18:20:22ZCash balance incorrect

Once again -- I'm really surprised that Support hasn't jumped in here.

Meanwhile, I've switched to a different software for investments. I'd rather have it all in one place, but can't trust Moneydance for the investment part until this is resolved.

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-08T20:05:49Z2020-08-08T20:05:50ZCash balance incorrect

I'm another user. I tried to reproduce it with only the entries shown, without success. Still, register view doesn't always tell the whole story (for example, I could reproduce that screenview with further work that your bookkeeper might have thought was a good idea at the time). If you run a Transactions report for that investment account, does it match that register view?
(I suggest the simple Transactions report rather than Transactions Filter or Investment Transactions, but you might have to scroll right or re-size columns to see everything.)

Bentag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-11T08:39:10Z2020-08-11T08:39:10ZCash balance incorrect

What version and build number is this occurring on?

There are reports of a problem around build 1893 with running balances.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-11T14:32:11Z2020-08-11T14:32:11ZCash balance incorrect

2019.3 (1880)

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-11T19:41:23Z2020-08-11T19:41:24ZCash balance incorrect

Rats, I'm using 2019.3 (1880) too and couldn't reproduce it.. I've got nothing but the usual troubleshooting suggestions, in rough order of priority:
- run a transactions report on that investment account - are you using more than one currency? - is there anything strange in the errlog.txt file in your .moneydance directory?. Hoping this might help,
Ben

Bentag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-11T23:20:54Z2020-08-11T23:20:54ZCash balance incorrect

Can't find an errlog.txt file.
The transactions report looks very little like the register, as it appears to be in a different order within days.

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-08-11T23:24:23Z2020-08-11T23:24:23ZCash balance incorrect

The Error log should be in one of the following places:

Given no customer service response, you may be caught in the "no one seems to have this problem but you" jungle,
while MD is prioritizing "get out their 2020 stable release", and watching for those type of posts.

just my opinion... I'd suggest posting again when the 2020 non-preview release is out.

dtdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/484867732020-10-02T23:07:11Z2020-10-02T23:07:12ZCash balance incorrect

Could it be the action type, I always have to manually change mine

Justin
