After some time not using it, I am trying to start using MD again for investment accounts. I have a question about ticker symbols.

In the Edit Securities dialog (Tools/Securities), the names are used, but not the ticker symbols.

In the Securities Detail screen, the ticker symbols are not used.

In the Register view, the ticker symbols are not used.

So, what value do I get from entering them when I create a new security? And, since they are not displayed anywhere, should I include them at the beginning of the security name so that I can see them in lists and such?

bruceinlouisvilletag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/492340192021-06-06T21:49:50Z2021-06-06T21:49:50ZDisplay of ticker symbols

I'm a fellow user.

The core use of Ticker symbols is in using the Quotes and Exchange Rate extension or the Quote Loader Extension to automatically download prices.

The combination of the exchange and the ticker gives a unique identifier that is used to download the correct price(s). Downloads from the price sources will generally use the Ticker rather than security names, so this will often be what is available.

If you want to include them as part of the security name that is up to you. It comes down to whether you find value in showing the ticker symbol in reports and lists.

dwg
