So perhaps this will work.</p></div>whitedavidptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T18:30:56Z2022-08-04T18:30:56ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>So, this will allow you to move the (selected) txns out of one account into another. It will not allow you to just transfer a share balance for example. It will move the original txns over. Is this what you want?</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T18:57:31Z2022-08-04T18:57:31ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>Thanks. I am not sure. Have not moved anything from Vanguard in 30 years. I would be moving only specific securities as I don't want to mess up the old vanguard history. I cannot help but wonder what such a move will leave behind - such as a possible positive cash balance as the purchase will no longer be there. Hmmm.</p></div>whitedavidptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T19:00:50Z2022-08-04T19:00:50ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>Backup first.<br>
Try it on a test dataset<br>
There are various options, but yes you may have cash not associated with the txns that you move that you will have to manually move. But that’s easy.</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T19:01:07Z2022-08-04T19:01:07ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>You can move selected or filter for a security.</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T19:19:56Z2022-08-04T19:19:56ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>Thanks for all! The extension and the help seem outstanding!</p>
<p>I regularly download OFX from both institutions. The xfer is not yet complete on their ends. I wonder what will get downloaded from them to reflect this and how/if MD will handle it?</p>
<p>It just happens that in this 1st case of my xfer of several accounts from Vanguard to Fidelity there is only a single institutional CD and a MM fund. And it is an IRA so there are no real tax implications (I think). So maybe a "sell" in Vanguard, xfer the resulting cash to Fidelity, and "re-buy" in Fidelity is the way to go?</p>
<p>I used to use Quicken but have no idea how it handled this. But I do seem to recall they had an xfer shares in/out.</p>
<p>Cheers!</p></div>whitedavidptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T19:26:51Z2022-08-04T19:26:51ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>Hi whitedavidp,</p>
<p>If you are transferring ALL of the holdings from VG to Fidelity, you can simply change the particulars of the VG account in Moneydance to reflect the particulars for Fidelity.</p>
<p>There's really no need to go through the motions of transferring the holdings, just change the particulars of the account.</p>
<p>You could make a notation in the 'Comments' section of the account as to the date of the transfer.</p>

That is a very novel approach. I will certainly think about that.</p></div>whitedavidptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T19:33:32Z2022-08-04T19:33:32ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>A SellXfr is the usual way to txfr shares(as cash). Then a Buy in the target account for the same number of shares. Do the Sell / cash txfr / Buy using the cost basis price (not the market price)</p></div>Stuart Beesley (Mr Toolbox)tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-04T19:49:19Z2022-08-04T19:49:19ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>That too is interesting. Thanks!</p></div>whitedavidptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/552273522022-08-08T15:16:17Z2022-08-08T15:16:17ZHow to handle Brokerage transfer of assets?<div><p>Having experimented a bit, I have to agree with Stuart (above) that using SellXfr seems to be the cleanest way to go. As I have been downloading from both brokerages, I found that I needed to disable downloads from the source brokerage BEFORE downloading their transaction of the XFER. Otherwise, things got rather screwed-up. So I manually entered the SellXfr there and the download from the target brokerage went fairly easily.</p>
<p>With regards Kevin's suggestion (above), given the downloaded transactions from the target brokerage, I ended up with duplicated assets. When I tried to delete the transactions causing this, they just came back on the next download. So I really think that in my case keeping the accounts apart was cleaner.</p>
<p>Thanks!</p></div>whitedavidp
