It really comes down to how much data (information) they provide and how much effort you wish to put in. It is not unusual for Investment houses to provide data in a way that is not all that useful for financial management software, often they just provide a simple list of transactions, which although they may provided most of the needed information it not structured in such a way that you can really use it as is.

Not wishing to change my occupation from 'retired' to 'Moneydance data acquisition and entry clerk' I decided to just manage fund type investments in Moneydance at a total level and to do other management in the investment platform

In Moneydance I created the investment account and a security for the investment. The initial transaction was entered as $1 per unit with the number of units being the total amount of the investment.

For ongoing management in Moneydance I put together a simple spreadsheet. Logging onto the investment platform I can see the total value of the investment as any point in time. By using my derived number of units and a simple division I can generate a unit price which can be entered into Moneydance to allow me to track to total investment value.

For deposits or withdrawals from investment I calculate the price per unit when the transaction is happening and again use a simple calculation to work how how many "units" the amount is equal to and thus give me the numbers to use in my buy/sell transaction.

There are other ways of tracking the investment but I found this to be the best way of doing it in Investment accounts without requiring a real lot of ongoing work.

Others may have different ideas.

dwg
