Bank Register Balance $0 in MD 2023?
Hi,
it seems that with MD 2023, the Bank Register balance in Investment Accounts does not show the resulting
balance of the shown bank transactions anymore; it used to before. It's always $0 now.
Is that a bug or a feature?
I actually look at that once in a while for a couple of my REITs to judge my ROI;
those tend to have regular distributions some of which are reinvested, some paid back
directly, plus share and price adjustment, which makes accounting a bit tricky (to me at least).
But, if I simply looked at the Bank Register, and it went into the negative, I knew I
was getting more money out of the REIT than I put in! :-)
I know I can get those numbers by running an "Investment Performance" report,
but the Bank Register is/was just a single click away.
Jens

Hi Maddy,
unfortunately build 5007 still has that same issue.

There does appear to be a behaviour change in MD 2023. I'm not sure exactly what the software is doing, that would take some more analysis, or the reasons behind it.

OK, I just checked and mine does show the (cash) balance fine.. Are you sure you don't have any filters applied?
However, I have noticed that the balance only shows upto / on the last showing txn in that Bank register... Thus if you had a Xfr dated 1/April/23 and then a Buy dated 2/April/23 then only the balance upto 1/April/23 would show.
I personally think this register is (and always has been) useless anyway... Just use the main Investment register as that will show you your cash balance anyway..

I've pulled the same data set into both MD2022 and MD2023 and then pulled up the same bank register.
There is more going on here.

and FWIW the balance in the Bank register has never reflected reality.

The two versions are including different items in the Bank register balance some items are in the bank register and I can see them being excluded from the running balance some items I can see are only in the Investment register and are being included.
Personally I'd like to see the balance column removed from the Bank register in Investment accounts as the register can never include all transactions.

Which one includes more txns?

The bank registers of both show the same transactions.

It looks like the bank register balance of the two versions are including/excluding different items.

Here's my use case, made up example. First screenshot shows the complete register as entered in MD 2022. Second the Bank Register; if you think of it as "Realized Gains of the account" it does make sense (to me anyway, multiply with -1). Once the balance crosses the $0 threshold, I got my investment back. The final balance after the final distribution and shares cancelled is my ROI.
Last screenshot is the same "file" with MD 2023, showing the Bank Register.
It's just a curious and unexpected change I don't see a reason for. But then, the bank register may not have any use for many others.
