How to correct a small discrepancy in initial share balance in investment account.
My MD records start at 12/31/2020 and for one of my investment accounts the 'Initial Balance' for one security is off by ~2 shares. I can trace the error to a transaction that occurred (in my brokerage records) on 12/20/2020 which did not get included in my 'Initial Balance'.
I've ignored this error for over 2 years so its not urgent - but it would tidy up my cross-checks with the brokerage account if fixed.
I cannot adjust the 'Initial Balance' in the Account Register for this security (or I haven't figured out how).
I cannot introduce a transaction because that causes my cash balance to then be off.
My intention is to simply adjust the share balance (with zero cost) as if it were an initial share balance.
Thanks for your time.

My workaround is to introduce a zero-cost buy transaction (on 1/1/2021 in this case) to adjust the share balance.
Again, ideally I want to adjust the 'Initial Balance' but am unable to do so.

The only way is to perform a dummy buy txn of some sort - the way you did this is one such way.

I've had to perform this correction on occasion as well, my solution has been to correct the number of shares, leave the total cost correct to agree with the brokerage statement, and let the per share cost adjust to compensate. Of course this will cause a slight discrepancy in the overall performance of the security but if the number of shares is substantial enough this error can be insignificant.
