How do I delete an unused security when system says it's in use?

I have a long-term position in Google from the days before it was Alphabet and the symbol for all Google shares was GOOG.

In January I bought another share of Google/Alphabet and downloaded transactions from my broker. MD viewed this as a new stock and used my broker's ugly name for it (GOOGL ALPHABET INC-CL A) with symbol GOOGL. I edited the transaction in the register to change the name to Google so it will be reported with the old shares. As expected, the new stock vanished from the account's list of securities.

I wanted to remove this stray security from the global securities list (Tools -> Securities). When I highlighted the security and hit the minus sign, I got the message:

Cannot remove currency (sic) that is being used.

The currency is not being used. How do I tell the system that it's not being used, short of restoring an old data file?

As another test I ran a cost basis report for every security in every account and the line for GOOGL indicates there is no activity for the stock:

GOOGL ALPHABET INC-CL A $ 0.00

Using beta Version 15.7 (1354)

Thanks,

W.B.

P.S. I see I purchased Google/Alphabet in August 2015 as well. That transaction was also entered via downloaded file. It's possible the bogus security was created then.

Go to the investment account that held this security. In the security detail window locate that security using the scroll menu. Use the remove security button to remove it from the account.

If there was a transaction linked to this security you have to remove it from the account first.

The security doesn't appear in the list you've described. I only see it when I go to main menu Tools --> Securities. That is where I'm trying to delete the stock and getting the error message.

When Google changed their name the ticker and cusip changed, which is common.

When you downloaded after this change, the transaction would have downloaded with the new name and cusip. MD not recognizing it, should have prompted you to match with an existing security. At this time you would have matched it with the old name. If you selected none of the above and it downloads with the new name, a new security is created.

If you edit the transaction to the correct security, the new security created from the download is still in the list for that investment account. It has to be somewhere on the list. Look for it listed as Alphabet or the cusip # .

If you have multiple investment account try looking in those accounts as well. There was a change a few version ago that dis-allowed the removal of a security from the tool bar if it was in an account, because people were mistakenly deleting securities they held in multiple accounts.

I edited the transaction to the correct security, and I'm pretty sure at that point it vanished from the list for that investment account. I don't think I went into the account's security list and deleted it, and I think the same thing has happened when other new securities came in from a download.

I have multiple investment accounts. I searched for this security in every account and could not find it. The Find and Replace extension couldn't find it in any transaction, nor could complete reports on capital gains and cost basis.

This makes sense, but I question the whole idea of having multiple lists of securities for multiple accounts. All I can see is extra work for users and extra programming for no benefit.
Anyway, when I look at the price history for this security I don't want, I see the first entry is for October 2, 2015 and it's meaningless (high, low and close are $100). The next entry is for 11/14/15 and it has valid data. This is the date of a purchase and was the first I entered via download from the broker (earlier Google transactions were entered in Quicken). I think I did something wrong/unexpected with that transaction and didn't notice a problem at the time. I doubt I'll ever be able to recreate this issue or get rid of the extra security, so you might as well close this ticket.
    Thanks,
