Duplicate Stock Prices
In the past few days, I have noticed that most (but not all) of the entries in my Stock Price list on the Summary screen are duplicated. It may not be a coincidence that this may have coincided with updating to version 2024.3 (5219)

Hi Alan
Are you sure you have not created duplicate securities. Check under TOOLS – SECURITIES to see if duplicates exist.

Hi Derek,
I checked as you suggested, and yes, there are multiple entries. How they got there, I don't know. I now need to work out which ones to delete and which to keep without messing things up.
Do you or anyone else have an idea how this could have happened?

Hi Alan.
All I can say it did not happen to me when I updated.
Try the following fix:
Make sure the Extension Toolbox is installed under Extensions - Manage Extensions.
Extensions - Toolbox – TOOLBOX Options – Update Mode – accept disclaimer – DO BACKUP NOW to create a Moneydance backup. if thing don’t turn out as you hope you can FILE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
Then select MENU: Currency & Security tools – FIX: Merge ‘duplicate’ securities (and related investments txns ) into one master security record and tick this box and click PROCEED.
Read and follow the process prompts very carefully. Once you successfully complete the process when you check under TOOLS – SECURITIES there should be only one subject security.
Hope this helps.

Thank you again for your suggestion. I was not aware of Toolbox, but have
installed and run it.
Following your suggestion I get the following message: Merge 'Duplicate'
Securities (by 'ticker': Not enough Securities / no valid duplicate Tickers
found (refer report on screen for details) - NO CHANGES MADE
I don't understand 'Not enough securities' I have about 60 stocks in the
database, each with between two and four duplicates.
I note that some of the price records are for old investments that I no
longer hold. Current ones seem to be identical other than each pair is the
same up to 14th February, then one was updated but not the other. I will
leave it for a few days and see if one is consistently updated and the other
is not. If that is the case, I can probably delete the unchanging one.
Anyway, apart from everything else, thanks for the toolbox tip. It looks a
bit scary, but worth having.

Thank you, Maddy.
I have attached a selection of screenshot files:
MD Price duplicates.png is from the summary page of MD (made up of several screens stitched together)
MD Toolbox Log.png is what it says on the can - also stitched together
The two other files are the price history of an example stock.
It has become clear that in many cases, there appear to be two sets of stock prices. One was last updated on 14 Feb, and the other is a copy that continues to be updated.
As an aside, Many of these stocks are no longer in my portfolio. Is it possible to configure the summary page to only show stocks that I currently hold?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Alan

Just spotted that the screenshots of the price history were of different stocks. These two should be the same stock, but showing the one not updated after 14 Feb.

If the problem persists, please send us a copy of your Moneydance error logs and we will investigate further.
You could navigate to Help->Console Window and click the arrow (at the bottom left). Select Copy to Clipboard and attach or paste the full content in your next reply.
Alternatively, you should navigate to:
Local Disk(C:)>Users>Your Name>.moneydance>errlog.txt
Finally you can copy the full content into your next reply here
Thank you

I tried the first option with toolbox. I got a message saying no duplicates were found, but on checking the summary screen, I could not see any changes from before.
I have attached the errlog (I wish I had known this before; it could have saved a lot of work!)

Can you navigate to Tools->Currencies, please?
Can you confirm which is the 'Base Currency'?
Are there any duplicate currencies?

Hi again,
Base currency is British Pound.
Euro and US Dollar updated today, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian Dollar shown, but not updated for some years.
Nothing that looks like a duplicate currency.

You may want to install the latest update.
Moneydance 2024.4 (5253) is available to download from this page.
For a full list of improvements in the preview version, please refer to this page.
We recommend overwriting or manually removing the older version.
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

Hi, Maddy,
The good news is that I have installed the update (which I presume is a Beta
version as the update check showed 2024.3 to be the last version)
The bad news is that it has not affected the stock price list.
I have checked and updated the Quote Installer and, while at it, Toolbox.
How are stock prices stored? It looks as though there might be a copy from
14 Feb that has been frozen and a separate copy that is being updated.
Perhaps the frozen one should have been deleted at some stage, but wasn't.

Can you navigate to Help->About Moneydance?
Are you running Moneydance 2024.4 (5253)?
If not you should downloaded and install it from this page.
This update was released on 20 Feb 2025.
You should also update the Toolbox version.
Then, please launch the "Toolbox", and select Update Mode
Navigate to Menu: Currency & Security tools
Select: DIAG: Diagnose currencies/securities (including relative currencies)
Finally, please copy and paste the results in your next reply.
Thank you

Hi Alan
Not sure about this so do a FILE – EXPORT BACKUP first.
Looking at the Toolbox output it looks like you have duplicate securities with the same NAME and TICKER but with a different ID.
As an experiment select both of the duplicate security, say AEGON STRATEGIC BOND B ACC and ensure both use the ID GB00B3ZLQW29
The run Toolbox to see it it can now merge this security.
Hope this helps.

Good thinking.
Looking more carefully at the Currency/Security History > Edit Security
Name, I see that in each pair, the one that has not been updated since 14
Feb has different values in the Security ID and Value Suffix fields from the
one that has been updated. However, it is inconsistent. In some cases, the
ticker Symbol has been used, and in others, it's the Security Name.
I wonder if a field was lost during a price update, and the values were put
in the wrong fields.
I'll hold fire for a few days as IK support is also investigating, and I
don't want to confuse things. It would be good if they could find and fix
the cause and avoid it affecting too many others if a bug is in the works.

Hi Alan
I doute it’s a bug and there is no way Quote Loader could duplicate securities. If Quote Loader find more than one security with the same Ticker it only update one security not the other. See page 12 of the PDF Quote Loader V2 Extension Moneydance 2022 to 2024 V11.10 attached to post 112 at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/7595-quo...
It's more likely if you have more than one investment account you created a new security even though one already existed or you just created duplicate securities.
I would recommend the test I outlined in my last post. As I said make sure you do a FILE – EXPORT first so you can FILE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP if something goes wrong.
Hope this helps.

Hi Alan,
I think the most likely explanation is that the duplicates were created while Moneydance was downloading or importing investment transactions. When downloading or importing, if Moneydance encounters a security which comes with an ID that hasn't already been assigned to a security, the it will show a window asking you to select the security with the specified name and ID. The default option in this window is usually "None of the above" which, if you didn't change anything in the window and just pressed return (clicked OK) then it would result in the creation of another security with the same name as the existing one, but a different ID.
I think this may be what is happening for at least some of the entries. For example according to the Toolbox output, the security "BT Group" exists twice in your file: once with ID
BT.A
and once with IDBT Group
. I think that different investment accounts or maybe different sources may have provided the same security using different identifiers. If this is the case, then I think the easiest solution may also come from the Toolbox extension, but can you say whether the above explanation seems plausible?
Thanks,
Sean
