Transferring assets in Kind
How would you transfer assets in kind from one investment account to another? I searched this up but the threads seem to be quite old and we are in 2025 now.
I have assets in one account which I transferred institutions. Is there any way to transfer in kind or I need to show a liquidation and then a purchase in the new account?
Thank you

This has been oft-requested feature but unfortunately remains unaddressed. See here for most recent conversation: https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/investments/9106-transfer-security-between-investments

There are only a couple of ways of doing it.
There are tools in the Toobox extension that can move investment transactions between accounts, there are limits.
The classic approach that has been used is to do a sell at cost price, transfer the funds, then perform a buy at the cost price. It is not perfect, but it keeps within the accounting rules and does not trigger any capital gains.
Dropping using accounting rules is not an option and works well in most places.
Where they do not work as well is in investment accounts, where in accounting, the in-depth nitty gritty is handled outside of the main accounting books.
It is where you have the high level accounting and the lower level detail stuff bought together where Moneydance is not quite complete.
It has gone part of the way with having current value through share price updates, share splits etc, but it has not gone all the way. You see here transfers between accounts being asked for, other things include stock for stock issues, return of capital etc, many of these things occur at the detail level but are not seen at the top level or are only seen on a total basis.
In accounting, these would be handled in separate worksheets. In a Personal Finance program you look for the software to do it as much as possible. Many of us are doing it the accounting way and have resorted to keeping associated worksheets (spreadsheets). I go as far as storing mine in the Moneydance folder tree.
