"Ghost" Securities
I've been doing cleanup on my list of securities and making sure there are no duplicates. When I look at the list of securities via Moneydance, the list looks good. But when I look using the tools in the Toolbox extension, particularly the one that shows me the hidden security ID field, it shows more than one entry for many securities. I can't seem to find any way to delete these "ghost" securities. None of the other Toolbox functions seem to affect them. A listing of securities showing what I'm talking about is attached. I'm open to suggestions.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.
Please launch the "Toolbox", and select Update Mode
Navigate to Menu: Currency & Security tools
Select: DIAG: Diagnose currencies/securities (including relative currencies)
Finally, please copy and paste the results in your next reply here.
Thank you

I got a small dialog box that said simply that everything looked good. I'm attaching the text output in s separate file (curr_sec_output.txt).

I suspect you do not have "Ghost" securities, but instead have securities that have multiple scheme's assigned to them and it is showing each scheme on a different line.

That's an interesting observation. I guess my question back to IK is simply - is that intended functionality? How does Moneydance handle multiple schemes? Will it check against all of the schemes when looking for a match (when importing security transaction data)? Are there any downsides to having multiple schemes listed?

You don’t need to worry about it. You will have no issues…

The way Stuart shows it in Toolbox keeps it more compact on the display, to show it on one line would make it spread out with a lot of holes, and I think make any extra schemes easy to miss, you will not miss them with the current output.
Having what amounts to hidden schemes gives Moneydance the extra data often needed to check against when it is matching downloaded transactions to securities. What Toolbox gives you is the ability to view and manage these schemes.
I believe IK thought it would always be handled automatically and that downloaded data would be consistent in the use of schemes in this regard, recent events have shown that this consistency may not always be present.

One last note - dwg suggests the Toolbox gives me the ability to view and manage the different schemes. But when I go through the Toolbox to edit a CUSIP, it only gives me access to one entry per security (i.e. the security is only listed once in the selection box). So those other schemes exist, but I don't see any way to "manage" them.

Ignore the title "edit a CUSIP" (this is what Moneydance calls the 'feature)... It allows you to edit any scheme..
I wrote that code when I didn't have access to any scheme data and to be frank, didn't use that data myself.. So it was all a bit of educated 'guesswork'. Toolbox works fine. This menu is a bit clunky, but works..

Stuart - I got that. I used Toolbox to enter SEDOL schemes to match what was coming out of PLAID. That worked fine.
But when I go through that process, it only shows the security once. If "APPLE INC" has 3 entries, how do I edit a specific one? Which of the 3 entries will it edit? Or does MD only allow one entry per scheme so if I specify a CUSIP scheme, it edits that entry?
I looked back through the output listing just now, I didn't find any cases with more than one of a particular scheme for a single security. APPLE has 3 entries, but one is CUSIP, one is SEDOL, and one says ISIN. If I go to edit that security and specify CUSIP, does it just overwrite that existing CUSIP record?

Yes if you specify an existing identifier it overwrites the value of the identifier. The option is more of an Add/Delete/Change option.
Perhaps Stuart could do a bit of rewording in Toolbox.

You select the security then fix it edit the cusip and then
EDIT ONE CUSIP
This is basically edit a scheme.

OK - I think this one is done. IK can close it as far as I'm concerned. I definitely appreciate the info - this gives me a better understanding of what's going on under the hood. Let's see how things work out going forward. Thanks.

All, FYI - toolbox has been updated to better wording (rather than just CUSIP) - get latest signed PREVIEW build here:

I like the changes - including the way you changed the output to only show the security name once when there are multiple schemes. Definitely clearer.
Thanks!
Chris
