Access key for syncing?
I'm trying to connect the ipad version of MoneyDance with the app running on my Mac. The Mac app sees the iPad app, but asks for an access key. What do I enter? According to your FAQ, there should be a series of numbers to enter. What I see on the iPad app is 4 lines of alphanumeric data, each line grouped into 3 sets of 4 characters. Is that what I'm supposed to enter as the access key? If not, where's the access key?

Dave,
Yes, this is the access key. Enter it in the Moneydance desktop program and you should be able to sync. Please be sure that you DO NOT enter spaces when you enter the key, and the key is not case sensitive. Good luck, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

I read the now closed thread regarding finding the access key in the backup data file. My problem is that I tried to find anything with "access" in all backups, but they are encrypted and cannot be read.
Apparently reinstalling the app will wipe out the iPhone database and create a duplicate of the desktop database. How can I find the access key to enable syncing without reinstalling keeping in mind that my database backup is encrypted?

Could you open your backup file, turn off encryption and then save it?

Ben - I did what you suggested and the file is not encrypted. Doing a search for access key turns up nothing.
It seems that if this Access Key is so vital to reinstalling the app, there should have been a warning or at the very least a suggestion to write the access key down in case of having to reinstall.
Are there any other options?

Currently if you don't see the access key in your backup data file there is no way to get the iPhone app to display it again. If you have removed the device from the net sync extension in the desktop app the only way to add it again is to reinstall the iPhone app and get a new access key. I agree that this is a significant problem as removing a device from the net sync extension if there are unsynchronized transactions will result in the loss of thse transactions. I have started a dialogue with the developers about this issue.
I am genuinely sorry for the trouble this has caused you.

OK, thanks. I'll bite the bullet and reinstall the app. I'm still a believer in Moneydance and the team.

Footnote: I reinstalled the app and this time copied down the access key. When I tried to enter and add the iPhone, I received the error message that it could not add the iPhone and to check the access key.
There wasn't anything wrong with what I had entered. It wasn't until I removed the spaces between the sets of numbers that it was accepted. This could cause problems and unnecessary support emails since the number is represented on the iPhone in sets of 4 numbers with 1 space between the sets.
The desktop software should accept with or without spaces.

What version of the net sync extension are you running. The last time I was working on the netsync extension code I was certain that it stripped out spaces if they had been entered. The current version fo the netsync extension is version 9.

I'll make sure that the spaces are ignored in the next release of the extension.

Ben,
I've been trying to set up my first synch with my iPad. While MD sees the iPad (i.e. the device name appears under "Device Name:"), the access key isn't recognized by the desktop. I've tried:
a) inputing in the ff. order: top row, left to right, 2nd row left to right, 3rd row.. 4th row.
b) I've omitted spaces;
c) use all caps
d) 0 = numerical, not letter
What do you recommend?
Rgds,

Make sure that your iDevice name does not include an apostrophe. If it does you can rename the device using iTunes.
If that still doesn't help remove and reinstall the app. This will give you a different access key.

Hi Ben,
Found out what the problem was: while my iPad's name didn't have an apostrophe, it inadvertently had a space AFTER its name. Once I removed the space via the iTunes rename function, the iPad finally synched!
Thanks,
