What we need to do is find your main data file on your computer. Without it, there is no way to sync your mobile apps with your desktop. Did you only have to reinstall Moneydance for some reason, or was there a larger problem with your computer?

By default, Moneydance data files are stored in a location described at http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/file-locations-and-changes/default-.... They are called something like yourfilename.moneydance (always ending with the .moneydance file extension). If you don't see your data file in that default location, you must have moved it somewhere else at some point. If you're not sure where this is, try searching your entire hard drive for all files and folders that end with the .moneydance extension. Once you have located a data file, use the open other option from the Moneydance welcome screen or the menu bar (File -> Open -> Open Other) to select your yourfilename.moneydance data set.

Good to hear from you and many thanks for your reply.

I have searched for .moneydance .money and come up with nothing. I have found an old .moneydancearchive but this is out of date.

Also a .moneydancesync on dropbox This seems to update when I use the mobile app. (mdsyncinfo.txt).

How is it that both iPad and iPhone have the right data from somewhere?

Many thanks

Andrew

The .moneydancesync file is what the mobile apps are getting the information from. However, this is only a tiny snapshot of the data in a complete Moneydance file, and is used only for temporarily sending information between the mobile apps and the main desktop data file, where all of your data is ultimately stored. That's still what we need to find.

Can you confirm that you found the default save location folder I described, and there was nothing in there?

Again on the reason for this reinstallation of Moneydance, was there something going wrong with your computer? I'm trying to determine if something may have happened to your main data file, like if you had to reinstall your operating system, or if someone (or some program) did some 'cleaning up' of your data.

Sorry I meant to explain, yes I accidentally uninstall Moneydance using a disc cleaner. My fault.
I have found the new Moneydance data folder and it is empty, I downloaded Moneydance again this morning.

I don’t mind about historical data as all the information I need seems to appear on the mobile apps. I have about 20 accounts on there!

If I have to scrap it all and start again it will be a pain but not insurmountable. I use it as a Net Worth calculator just updating monthly balances really.

Your help is appreciated.

I'm worried that you may have also deleted your main data file along with the program using this disc cleaner that you describe. While the program and data files are stored in different places (so deleting the program itself should have no effect on your data file), that program may have wiped out both the program and your data. Beyond looking in the default save location and searching your computer for ,moneydance files, which it sounds like you have tried, I don't think there's anything else that can be done. Did you perhaps make any backups of your Moneydance data file to an external disk, along with the rest of your critical data before running this cleaning program?

If your main data file is indeed gone, then I'm afraid there is no way to recover the information from your mobile apps. Setting up syncing with a new data file will tell Moneydance to overwrite whatever information is on your mobile apps with the new data file, and there's no way to automatically reconstruct a main data file from the mobile apps. I'm sorry that I don't have better news for you. Definitely let me know if you manage to find a copy of your main desktop data file somewhere, as we could then work to restore it.

Many thanks for looking at this with me.

I can gain information from my mobile app and then start again.

Fortunately, as I said I’m not losing years of spending/financial data.

Best regards
