Alternative method for sync
Hi,
I'm using a trial version of Moneydance. I really like the product. However, I don't want my financial data to travel outside of my environment even if it's encrypted. How can I sync between my desktop and my Android device without Dropbox? A network sync would be an idea, IP to IP via a shared folder.
Thanks

I'm a fellow user.
With mobile devices Dropbox is the only choice available, as far as I am aware mobile devices do not have the capability of using shared folders.

Hi again.
I know it can be done, we have our own apps that can communicate with a
Windows machine via Sync. In fact, my QNAP NAS at home has a QSync
application that can communicate with a mobile or Windows QSync module.
Handy feature. Just an idea.
I noticed that you haven't had a new release in a while. What are the plans?
Also, how is the company structured? Are support folks employee? As well
as developers?
Thanks

Hi John,
Thank you for contacting us.
The network synchronizer was available in older versions of Moneydance, but has been removed in favour of Dropbox syncing.
We chose to sync using only Dropbox, as it's more stable, robust, and it is end-to-end encrypted.
The 2019 version of Moneydance is currently being worked on, I however currently don't have any concrete dates that I can share with you.
I recommend following our blog for updates.

Thanks for the reply.
That's unfortunate you did not leave that other option. Especially, if
you want to sync inside your local network. Sometimes removing a feature
that other use is not a fan favorite. Let the user decide which option
to use. I've been developing software for many years and don't trust my
personal data outside of my network. I don't like my data on other
outside servers even though they claim to be safe.
Also, how is the company structured? Are support folks employee? As well
as developers?
Where are you located?

I'm a fellow user.
In reading old discussions it looks like that the Moneydance folks had to field a lot of issues being caused by network configurations that would not allow the old Wi-Fi solution to work, it appears that they ere issues that they could not resolve.

I'm a fellow user.
If I remember correctly, the issue was exactly about the stability and
reliability of the local network to handle the requirements of a
"multi-master" set of databases. Also, the database technology used by
MD does not lend itself to be a "multi-master".
A "multi-master" database is a set of files that each contain a true
copy of the data. Each one is the factual representation. In reality, it
is quite complicated to have this because changes are made quite
randomly, and how does one resolve changes from two different sources
(users update) I reference a lot of questions about "lost" transactions
and changes not appearing, or "staying". Things get really complicated
if there are more than two so-called copies available. Using Dropbox
resolves some of these complications, but it does raise security
concerns of habving your data stored in the cloud (and Dropbox is not
PCI certified (means that the security has not undergone extension
testing looking for vulnerabilities).
If interested, I can post a set of instructions that will sets one
computer to maintain the program and files, and allows multiple other
computers to access that one computer and run MD on it. For now, I am
using a Chromebook and Chrome Remote extension, but the extension is
multi-platform. I need to do a bit more on its security paradigm since
it may be going through a Google server. Unfortunately, it does not work
with iPhone or Android although there are other apps that can be used.
(my Phase 2).

Thanks for the reply.
Most likely, user error (not understanding).
So, this company does not have employees?
Where are you located?

What about a local connection to a DropBox like storage device.
If MD can connect to DropBox to get the DB, how can we have a local
DropBox type connection? As if DropBox was on the local LAN.

The Moneydance Mobile app is using the Dropbox API to communicate with the dropbox server so it is very specific. The syncing mechanism also expects the syncing location to be present whenever moneydance is being used, I do not believe the software has a store and forward mechanism to allow for offline usage of the application, the offline capability that exists today in the desktop product is solely due to the dropbox client capability.
