odd behavior from the iphone app

I was pulling my hair out tonight trying to get the app running. I kept entering the key,but it kept saying it was wrong. What I did to fix it was unplug the iPhone from my Mac and do the procedure via wifi. After reading the FAQ closely,I can see this now,but shouldn't the app accept the sync when plugged into the machine?
