When you set up syncing between computer the primary computer is the one you start syncing by clicking MONEYDANCE – SYNCING. All the other computers are synced to the primary computer by clicking MONEYDANCE – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE.

The only computer that allows you the select Don’t Sync is the primary computers, secondary computers have the syncing method grayed out. If you have a primary computer Moneydance backup made by MONEYDANCE – EXPORT BACKUP or a automatic backup set under MONEYDANCE – PREFERENCES – BACKUP then when you restore the backup using MONEYDANCE – RESTORE BACKUP you will find that syncing has been set to Don’t Sync to avoid the issues you are encountering of syncing corrupting your data set. You should not use your time machine to back up your data set, you should use the backup created by Moneydance. See if you can find a Moneydance backup and restore that using Moneydances MONEYDANCE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
EXPORT BACKUP file naming convention is yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydancearchive.
Automatic file naming convention is yourdatasetname.yyyy-mm-dd.moneydancearchive.

When you MONEYDANCE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP you do not overwrite your existing data set. This is in case you later find you need access to your old data set.

A new data set is created with the naming convention – from manual backup yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydance the date time code taken from the backup file - from auto backup yourdatasetname (plus at number) e.g. yourdatasetname 2.moneydance The default data set location can be found under HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. You can delete old data sets you no longer want. You can rename a restored data set with Moneydance closed as you would any other folder provided you retain “.moneydance” extension. A data set is a folder not a file containing other folders and files. When you open Moneydance it will open in the “Welcome to Moneydance” window with the data set name listed on the right.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474957072019-08-02T21:31:33Z2019-08-02T21:31:34ZHow do I switch off syncing

Thank you so much Derek. It has taken a couple of goes but I have now got what seems to be a stable file, named clearly which is not syncing. I wish I had tried asking here three nights ago rather than sweating over lost data.
Glad I was able to help.

Out of interest was it just two computers you were syncing. Were they running the same version build of Moneydance e.g. 2019.4(1887) and what was that version/build?
What syncing method were you using Dropbox Folder or Dropbox Connection?

Have Fun.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474957072019-08-03T10:55:44Z2019-08-03T10:55:45ZHow do I switch off syncing

Hi
Initially, they were both running the same older version (2017.8) but I had updated my MacBook to 2019.3 to try to cure the problem.
I was syncing via Dropbox. It had worked fine for ages.
Just keeping to one file and one computer from now on!y!

Thanks, Keith

stornowaykeithtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474957072019-08-03T11:16:46Z2019-08-03T11:16:46ZHow do I switch off syncing

I am not support staff, just a user.

If you do decide at some point to turn on syncing again.

Rest Syncing.
1. Make sure all computers are running the same version and build at all times. Running different version/builds can create problems.
2. On your primary computer set up Moneydance auto backup under MONEYDANCE – PREFERENCES – BACKUP and use Dropbox as the backup location, set number of backups to say 10.
2. In Dropbox folder delete the folder “.moneydancesync”.
3. On your secondary computers click HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER to open a file finder, Close Moneydance and delete the secondary data set.

You are now ready to start syncing from scratch. I suggest you use the syncing method Dropbox Folder.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23
