Hi linleyfam

You don’t say what version or build of Moneydance you are running, e.g. 2019.4(1888) so I am assuming its 2019. The only following applies to 2019.

First do an EXPORT - BACKUP in case something goes Wrong.

With a secondary data set the syncing method is fixed, greyed out and cannot be change. You get the same result after restoring a secondary computer Moneydance backup. Make sure the auto backups for the primary and secondary computers are not set to use the same location if you are say using Dropbox.
To convert a secondary data set to a primary data set you need to run the attached script md2017_convert_secondary_to_master.py in Moneydance 2019. Don’t worry it states 2017.

With your data set open click WINDOW - SHOW MONEYBOT CONSOLE use OPEN SCRIPT to select the script and click RUN. Wait for the script to complete its run, it can take a minute. Close and reopen Moneydance. You should now be able to change the syncing method.

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-27T10:54:32Z2019-09-27T10:54:32ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

Awesome. Hi linleyfam

Glad I was able to help.

I sorted the file but then when I want to set up the file for sync via dropbox connection, as soon as I select OK the box window disappears. Hi linleyfam

Not heard of that one before.
Have you tried Dropbox Folder instead of Dropbox Connection, assuming you have Dropbox client installed that is you can see your Dropbox folder on your C drive.
Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-27T15:55:17Z2019-09-27T15:55:17ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

Thanks. I will try that. Assumed connection was way to go but your point seems logical. I do have Dropbox client. Haven't understood properly so thanks for the enlightenment!

linleyfamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-27T17:03:05Z2019-09-27T17:03:05ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi linleyfam

For info.
The following is an explanation given by Sean the software developer regarding these two syncing methods, Dropbox Folder and Dropbox Connection.

“With "Dropbox Connection" Moneydance uses the Dropbox API to talk to the Dropbox service directly. So, you don't need to have Dropbox client actually installed on your computer, but you do need to be online when Moneydance is running in order for changes to be synced. With "Drobox Folder" Moneydance will just read and write files to your Dropbox folder on your computer, which means that you need to have Dropbox client installed and running, but you don't need to be online in order for Moneydance to read and write the changes.”

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-29T05:25:45Z2019-09-29T05:25:45ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

Further to this I have tried selecting Dropbox folder but the same issue occurs in that as soon as I select Dropbox folder method the selection window disappears. I then tried using my iCloud stored folder and the selection window did not disappear. So I have confirmed then that the selection window disappears only when using either of the two Dropbox methods. That is the case on all three of my computers. Seems then it may be something I need to sort in my Dropbox account?

linleyfamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-29T07:01:42Z2019-09-29T07:01:42ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi linleyfam

Can you define your setup? You are running 2019.3(1880) on how many computers? What are there operating systems? Are you syncing to any mobile devices, if so what and how many?

Close and restart Moneydance. Follow the process to set up syncing using Dropbox Folder to the point just before you click OK and things go wrong.
Post a screen shot of the window that closes when you click OK so I can be clear at what stage you are at in setting up syncing when things go wrong?
Click OK and if thing go wrong close Moneydance and post a copy of your Moneydance errlog.txt file.

Regarding Dropbox you may be onto something.

To test the theory and to rule out the possibility that the problem is something to do with your current data set try the following.
Set up a test data set FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW on your primary computer and then set up a passphrase and select Dropbox Folder under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SYNCING. and see if you can complete the process.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-30T20:45:15Z2019-09-30T20:45:15ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

I am running moneydance on 3 computers - 2 laptops and one iMac. Operating system is MacOS Mojave version 10.14.6. I am not syncing to any mobile devices.
Hi have attached a screen shot before I select OK. Once I select ok then the selection box screen disappears when selecting the dropbocc. Screenshot before the screen disappears is attached.
Then ran a 'New' account set and the Dropbox sync options worked fine so it then seems that the problem is obviously connected to the file I'm using.
Please could you tell me where I locate the errlog.txt file which you requested? Once i can access that I will send the err log through to you. Thanks so much for your help so far...

linleyfamtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-30T22:38:16Z2019-09-30T22:38:16ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

I am not support staff, just a user.

I am a windows user, not a Mac user, so I may get some of the terms wrong.
The errlog.txt file should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:
~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt or:
~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder, open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:
~/Library This should pull up your local Library folder.

Thanks for the screen shot; it tells me at what point you are in the sync process.
When you click OK the only result you will see on that computer is a status message “Finished writing sync data” which after a delay appears for a short period of time at the bottom of the main Moneydance window. Do you see this message?
The first time you sync any data set Moneydance creates a folder called “.moneydancesync” in your Dropbox folder.
On a Mac “.moneydancesync” may be hidden, if necessary, try in your Finder window, typing CMD-Shift-G and then pasting ~/Dropbox/.moneydancesync/ into the box to unhide. Again s a windows user the possible need to unhide “.moneydancesync” is only what I have read on this site.
For each data set you sync an alphanumeric folder is created within “.moneydancesync” There is a file in each of these folders called mdsyncinfo.txt. Open this text file in a text editor and the first line will define the data set that the alphanumeric folder relates to. Do you see an alphanumeric folder that relates to your data set?

Let’s see if any of the above throws any light on your issue before working out the next step.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-09-30T23:26:50Z2019-09-30T23:26:50ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi linleyfam

Thinking further maybe we are looking at this issue to deeply and not trying the obvious, that is resetting syncing.

Set primary computer “Sync Method” to “Don’t Sync” under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SYNCING, then click OK.

On your primary computer use FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – EXPORT BACKUP to save a backup in case something goes wrong.

On both your secondary computers click on HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER to open a file explorer, close Moneydance and delete your secondary computers data sets “yourdatasetname.moneydance”.

Using your primary computer in the Dropbox folder delete the folder “.moneydancesync”. Watch the Dropbox icon and wait till it states “Up to Date”. This can talk some time. Note on Mac “.moneydancesync” is hidden, try in your Finder window, typing CMD-Shift-G and then pasting ~/Dropbox/.moneydancesync/ into the box to unhide.

On both your secondary computers check that in the Dropbox folder that the folder “.moneydancesync” has been automatically deleted. You need to give Dropbox a short time to complete this deletion.

On your primary computer under FILE - SYNCING, set your “Encryption Passphrase”, set “Sync Method” to “Dropbox Folder”, click OK.

Wait for Dropbox folder “.moneydancesync” and its contents to be created. Check the Dropbox icon states “Up to Date”. This can take some time.

On your secondary computers wait until the same Dropbox folder appears on your secondary computers, again watch the Dropbox icon this time on your secondary computers and wait till it states “Up to Date”.

On your first secondary computer starting Moneydance should open it in the welcome window, click on “Create a new account set”.

Select “Open Synced File” and use dropdown to select “Dropbox Folder” then click NEXT.

You should see a search screen headed “Select a synced document to open”

After a short search delay, it should then list your data set name used on your primary computer.

Highlight your data set name and click NEXT.

Enter the encryption password, the “Encryption Passphrase” you set on your primary computer under FILE – SYNCING.

Then click on FINISH. Wait for your data to be synced.
You may find a lot of old, maybe closed accounts or other accounts you have removed from the side bar reappearing in the second computers side bar. Use the “+” sign at bottom of side bar then ADVANCED to tidy up the side bar.

Repeat step 9 onwards for your second secondary computer.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/476661042019-10-01T09:18:36Z2019-10-01T09:18:36ZRestored backup - Cannot change Don't Sync

Thanks so much for the very detailed explanation and I now have it all up and running again and i understand preferable to the Dropbox Connection I had before. Hi linleyfam

Sorry it took me so long to suggest the obvious, that is resetting syncing.
But glad you are now back up and running again.
