What's to update?

It works with OneDrive as is!

Read the instructions on Syncing with Other Computers in the MoneyDance help pages:
https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data/sync...

The drop-down for File/Syncing that shows Dropbox also has an option that says "shared folder". All I did was put a new folder I created in OneDrive in the dialogue that followed, and create a password. Then CLOSE DOWN MoneyDance on that first computer. Install and open MoneyDance on your second computer ensuring it is the same version number. Follow the instructions on the MoneyDance web site as above and enter the folder location and password.

It works. No need for Dropbox.

If you look in that cloud folder you will notice that there is a file called mdsyncinfo.txt which updates whenever you make a change in MoneyDance.

Just beware that you must not have both instances of MoneyDance open at the same time or else you will end up with a sync conflict and two copies of the sync file.

JimRBtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477303332019-10-15T12:27:05Z2019-10-15T12:27:08ZUpdates on implementing Syncing via iCloud, Onedrive or any other cloud service.

I am not upset. I am dead worried that I would have to migrate. Migration is not easy with my present set up.
Perhaps, I did not make my concern clear enough.

For me a lot depends on keeping my Laptop, desktop, iPad and iPhone in sync.

Unless there is version i am not aware of, Moneydance Mobile, in its present incarnation does not allow syncing other than wifi, which, In its naker words, is unreliable and state it in the app. And Dropbox.

As you might know, Dropbox dropped the count of connected device down and wI was chided and blackmailed when I opened Dropbox app on ios device informing me so.

I am hoping, no PRAYING, that Moneydance mobile programmers can implement something other than only Dropbox, hence my post.

Escapstag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477303332019-10-15T15:18:15Z2019-10-15T19:58:09ZUpdates on implementing Syncing via iCloud, Onedrive or any other cloud service.

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Escapis and JimRB

First Escapis

The Dropbox restrictions maybe not as bad as they first sound.

The limit of 3 devices running Dropbox applications with a free account applies to the devices that can be connected to a Dropbox product itself, via official Dropbox applications, such as the official Dropbox desktop client or mobile applications.
If your computer is using Dropbox Folder as a syncing method for Moneydance then as you have to have Dropbox Client installed, this count towards the limit. However, if you use Dropbox Connection and don’t have Dropbox Client installed, this does not count towards the limit. This limit does not apply to third party apps that connect to Dropbox via the Dropbox API, such as the Moneydance Mobile APP. Your mobile devices would only count towards the limit if you had Dropbox official app installed on your mobile devices for another reason.

Any replacement for Dropbox needs to support Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android, some don’t. In its current form the free Moneydance app for mobile device needs an API provided by the cloud server service, equivalent to the API provided by Dropbox.

I have been syncing between two Windows computers and an Android phone since early 2017, now running 2019.4(1888) and have not experienced any syncing issues to my phone running Android Moneydance mobile 1.15, maybe I am just lucky. I recently added a second Android phone and on that I using the new 2.0 Android beta version without problems.

JimRB

Escapis is correct. If you want to sync mobile devices the only option at the moment is to use Dropbox.

I have performed short term Moneydance (2019.4(1888)) sync tests using Shared Folder on my Windows computers. I have tested OneDrive, Google Drive and pCound, all appear to work. Longer term testing is required or reports from others who have used a cloud server for a long period with Moneydance sync, without issues. A word of warning, not all cloud severs are equal. I tested Box.com. Set-up and initial sync were fine, but in use Box.com reported sync failures. This resulted in some transactions not being synced, at least in my testing. So, if you use Shared Folded to sync Moneydance, do regular export backups, be vigilant looking for sync errors, until you are certain syncing is working reliably.

With Moneydance’s built in sync engine, as used in 2017 and 2019, it is safe to have two or more instances of the same data sets open and syncing. The sync engine is designed to prevents conflicts and syncing data corruption.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477303332019-10-15T16:35:56Z2019-10-15T16:35:57ZUpdates on implementing Syncing via iCloud, Onedrive or any other cloud service.

Derekkent23,

Do I understand from your post that i can delete the dropbox client on both Macs, while retaining them on iPad and iPhone?

Do you know if/whether infinitekind are working on implementing another option?

Escapistag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477303332019-10-15T17:31:02Z2019-10-15T20:01:31ZUpdates on implementing Syncing via iCloud, Onedrive or any other cloud service.

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Escapes

Moneydance Mobile app for iPad and iPhone has an embedded Dropbox API that sync directly to the cloud server and thus does not count towards the 3-device limit. So, unless you need Dropbox on these devices for another reason uninstall Dropbox from them. If you do this you don’t need to make any changes as far a Moneydance syncing is concerned.

You can then have Dropbox Client installed on three computer and use the syncing method Dropbox Folder. If you need to sync to more than three computers then these computers don’t need Dropbox Client installed, just use Dropbox Connection. Dropbox Connection uses an embedded API which syncs directly to the cloud server and thus does not count towards the 3-device limit.

To sum up provided Dropbox Client is not installed on more than three devices you are not exceeding the 3-device limit.

Sean the Moneydance software developer is working on the next release of the mobile app. He has released an Android beta build 2.0. It’s my understanding it sync all your data to the mobile device. In fact, I am running it on one of my Android phones. It includes some nice user interface updates. I think the next stage is to update the interface to allow access to other feature now all the data is available on the phone. I presume an updated iOS app will follow.

To answer your question, I have heard nothing that suggest Sean will be introducing support for other sync servers for mobile devices. Dropbox does the job and at least in my opinion his time is better spent on improving features on mobile devices and on computers.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477303332019-10-16T12:07:15Z2019-10-16T12:07:17ZUpdates on implementing Syncing via iCloud, Onedrive or any other cloud service.

I did it, I deleted both desktops Dropbox app and reinstalled the iOS ones.
It worked perfectly.

Thank you derekkent for setting me free.

Entre-nous, I am glad I got rid of the Dropbox clients on Desktop. I have never liked it, with their haughty attitude and scavenger’s practices. Not unlike their present President.

I just hope, infinitekind, implement iCloud sync. It is safe, always there and has come a long way since it’s inception.

Escapistag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477303332019-10-16T15:36:57Z2019-10-16T15:36:57ZUpdates on implementing Syncing via iCloud, Onedrive or any other cloud service.

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Escapes

Glad I was able to help.

Have Fun.

derekkent23
