At some point where you syncing?
The situation you describe of not being able to change the sync method is what you would expect to see on a secondary computer were the syncing was setup using FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE. This is also what you would expect to see if you restored a backup from a secondary computer data set.
If this is what is happening there is a way to convert a secondary data set to a primary data set so that the syncing method can be change. Post if you need help to do that.

Hi Joe

Sound like you have two Apple computers and Android phone.

When to set up syncing, one computer is the primary computer, the one set up using FILE – SYNCING. The other is a secondary computer, set up using FILE – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE. If you restore a backup from a secondary computer the syncing method is set to Don’t Sync and cannot be changed. You restored a secondary data set backup. One way this could have happened is if your automatic backup saves to the same location, say in Dropbox. The primary and secondary auto backups saved on the same day have the same name. One overwrites the other. So, if the last backup was of the secondary computer then when you restored the syncing method would have been stuck at Don’t Sync.

It sounds like you would prefer to use your iMac as your primary computer.

This is a two-step process. Convert your iMac data set from a secondary to a primary data set then reset syncing.

On your iMac first do an EXPORT - BACKUP in case something goes Wrong.

To convert a secondary data set to a primary data set you need to run the attached script md2017_convert_secondary_to_master.py in Moneydance 2019. Don’t worry it states 2017.
With your data set open click WINDOW - SHOW MONEYBOT CONSOLE use OPEN SCRIPT to select the script and click RUN. Wait for the script to complete its run, it can take a minute. Close and reopen Moneydance. You should now be able to change the syncing method.
You now need to reset syncing as follows.

On your phone use its setting menu to disconnect.

Ensure on your primary computer, now the iMac that “Sync Method” is set to “Don’t Sync” under FILE – SYNCING, then click OK.

On your primary computer use FILE – EXPORT BACKUP to save a backup in case something goes wrong.

On your second computer, now your macbook click on HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER to open a file explorer, close Moneydance and delete your data sets “yourdatasetname.moneydance”.

Using your primary computer in the Dropbox folder delete the folder “.moneydancesync”. Watch the Dropbox icon and wait till it states “Up to Date”. This can talk some time.

In your second computer check that in the Dropbox folder, that the folder “.moneydancesync” has been automatically deleted. You need to give Dropbox a short time to complete this deletion.

On your primary computer under FILE - SYNCING, set your “Encryption Passphrase”, set “Sync Method” to “Dropbox Folder”, click OK.

Wait for Dropbox folder “.moneydancesync” and its contents to be created. Check the Dropbox icon states “Up to Date”. This can take some time.

Wait until the same Dropbox folder appears on your second computer, again watch the Dropbox icon this time on your second computer and wait till it states “Up to Date”.

On your second computer starting Moneydance should open it in the welcome window, click on “Create a new account set”.

Select “Open Synced File” and use dropdown to select “Dropbox Folder” then click NEXT.

You should see a search screen headed “Select a synced document to open”

After a short search delay, it should then list your un-synced data set name used on your primary computer.

Highlight your data set name and click NEXT.

Enter the encryption password, the “Encryption Passphrase” you set on your primary computer under FILE – SYNCING.

Then click on FINISH. Wait for your data to be synced.

You may find a lot of old, maybe closed accounts or other accounts you have removed from the side bar reappearing in the second computers side bar. Use the “+” sign at bottom of side bar then ADVANCED to tidy up the side bar.

Now set up syncing on your phone.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022019-12-17T04:49:49Z2019-12-17T04:49:49Zno sync options

I could not figure out from your directions how to run the script. I
the best and easiest way to get my macbook pro and android phone synced
again running 2019.3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Joe Elwoodtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022020-07-01T01:26:44Z2020-07-01T01:26:44Zno sync options

I'm a fellow user.

The first version of Moneydance qualified with Catalina is 2019.3. As far as I am aware no testing has been done with any 2017 release. We do know of various issues occurring with older versions of Moneydance on Catalina, so I believe it would be prudent to upgrade Moneydance first.

This is a suggested approach to performing system upgrades when you are using syncing in Moneydance version 2017 or newer. The goal of the approach is to start with consistent data across all systems, upgrade without touching any data and finish the upgrade with all systems having been updated and the data and environment in the same state as when the upgrade was commenced.

The steps are:

1. The first step is to start Moneydance on each system and ensure that all syncing has completed. Thus you should have identical data on each system, all transactions should be present on every system.
2. Take a backup of your data and put it in a safe place.
3. The next step is to shut down Moneydance on each system, during the upgrade you do not want Moneydance running on any other system that participates in the data syncing.
4. Perform the upgrade on each system in turn, with this system being the only one running Moneydance.
5. Once all systems have been upgraded you should be able to start Moneydance on each system and ensure the software is working correctly and that the data is also correct.

From observation the approach often used is to disable syncing on each machine, perform the upgrade and then re-implement syncing. However I believe the above procedure should work and in any case you have your backup so you are in no worse a position should you have a problem.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022020-07-04T21:43:11Z2020-07-04T21:43:11Zno sync options

I purchased the upgrade but I cannot find the place to enter the new

There are only two instances where I think this can occur.

You are using a version of Moneydance from Apple's app store, they come pre licensed

You had purchased Moneydance 2017 registered it then upgraded to Moneydance 2019, as the upgrade is free for MD 2017 users you would not expect the register option to be present.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022020-07-04T22:32:02Z2020-07-04T22:32:02Zno sync options

In addition to purchasing the new version, have you also downloaded and installed that version from http://infinitekind.com/downloads?

Hi Joe

As you have just purchased a new key it is only valid for Moneydance versions 2019 and the preview version 2020.

You should do a FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) EXPORT BACKUP first.

Then either download stable 2019 from https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software

Or the preview 2020 from https://infinitekind.com/preview

Be aware a preview may contain as yet undiscovered bugs whereas the stable has been out there some time and like 2017.10 any bugs remaining are well known.

I am running 2020 quite happily.

When you download your new version simple install it to overwrite your existing 2017.10
This will replace 2017 with the new version.
When you open your new version your data will still be there.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022020-08-23T20:42:08Z2020-08-23T20:42:08Zno sync options

Got the new computer. Installed Dropbox and Moneydance. Moneydance

If you open a data set and find that all of the accounts stop around a specific date is suggests a number of things.

The main thing is suggests is that you have multiple data sets and have opened an older one rather than the current one.

A common way for this to happen is that a backup was restored at some point, usually the name of the data set gives this away because it included a date as part of the name.

I would suggest to search your machine to see if any other Moneydance data sets exist. As this is a new computer you may have inadvertently copied the wrong one from the old machine so will likely need to search that machine as well.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022020-08-23T22:31:44Z2020-08-23T22:31:44Zno sync options

I backed up an up to date device (old iMac) on a usb and used it to update
the new computer(new iMac). Then I put in a transaction and one of my

One thing a backup does is turn syncing off on the backup copy, and for a very good reason. If you have corrupted data then restoring a historical backup that has syncing enabled would overwrite that good data with bad, not a good outcome.

In this thread I think I can see three desktop/notebook devices and a mobile device. It is not clear to me what the current configuration is and which device is the master. With the new computer I am not sure if this is totally replacing a device or is just going to be an additional device in the configuration. If it is replacing a device which one and what is that devices role in the configuration.

Only by understanding what you have, the current environment and where you want to get to can approaches be suggested.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/477479022020-08-23T23:10:03Z2020-08-23T23:10:04Zno sync options

Right now the old iMac is the master.
I have made some notes on a process that I believe will result in the replacement of a master system without any secondary systems needing to be recreated. I've included these note below.

This procedure assumes you have completely functioning solution, i.e. it is not designed to replace a failed system. It also assumes you have a copy of the Moneydance installation kit for the same version as you are already using, a Moneydance syncing solution should have the same software version, including the build number, on all systems.

The intention here is to create, on the replacement system, a functioning Moneydance system that has the syncing relationship as it existed with the old system, along with existing extensions, preferences etc all intact.

As always before you commence your should take a Moneydance backup, even though we will not be altering any data on your existing system, a backup is always a wise precaution. For the purpose of describing the solution I will be assuming that your data is in the default location, you will need to make appropriate allowances if that is not the case.

Also before starting you should ensure all systems have up-to-date data and that Moneydance is not running on any system. Do not start Moneydance on any system until indicated.

Moneydance separates the program data from user data and user preferences. User level information is stored under the .moneydance folder that is located in your home directory. This is the data we are interested here. The steps given here also avoid making any assumptions, hence will be mirroring the existing set up.

1. On the replacement system create a user account with the same name as the user on the existing machine.
2. You will be using the same syncing mechanism, so if using Dropbox Folder install the dropbox client and select the same location on the replacement system as is on the existing system, if using Shared Folder attach to the shared folder using the same drive letter. Dropbox Connection requires no specific setup.
3. On the existing system ensure that Moneydance is not running, then copy all folders and data from the .moneydance folder down, I would recommend using some USB connected device as it makes this completely separate from any dropbox or shared data and thus can avoid some potential confusion.
4. Copy the data from the USB devices onto the new system under the user’s home directory. This creates the .moneydance folder structure. At this stage the Moneydance user data on the two systems should be a mirror of each other in all ways.
5. Install the Moneydance software onto the new system.
As said above Moneydance should not be running on the system you are replacing, provided this migration has worked you will not run Moneydance again on this system at least until some changes are made to it.
6. Start Moneydance on the new system.
7. At this stage it is necessary to validate Moneydance operation on the new system. The following steps are suggested.
a) Moneydance should have started by opening your existing data.
b) Check to make sure your copy is registered.
c) Check the preferences to see that they have been carried over.
d) Make sure your custom reports (if any) are present.
e) Check the transaction registers to make sure data is present and correct.
f) Check under the File → Syncing menu to ensure that it would be possible to set the data to “Don’t Sync” - this confirms the system as the master.
8. Provided the system has passed previous tests you should enter some transactions to ensure that data is replicated correctly (Do not start Moneydance on the old master system!)
9. If all tests are passed it is time to ensure the old master system cannot cause any problems. At a minimum the original data directory tree under .moneydance/documents should be deleted.

The only thing I would add here is that if you want to continue using the old system in the solution you would then proceed to setup the machine as a secondary one using the standard instructions i.e. the menu command: File –> New –> Open Synced File.

dwg
