I tend to take a cautious approach and an Ultra Cautious approach where financial data is concerned. I still have my Quicken data from the 2000's in a safe place!

All Moneydance data I would copy to an external drive or write it to something like a CD - just in case.

Then, as you wish to start afresh I would delete anything to do with Moneydance from the systems and that includes from Dropbox, how Dropbox is used has changed significantly since 2011 and the method is not compatible.

"DB Folder".. "DB Connection".. "Shared Folder" defines the syncing method to use. Your mobile devices like the iPad will use Connection, there is no choice given on these platforms. As a very rough generalisation you select Dropbox Folder if you have the Dropbox client installed and Dropbox Connection if you do not. In your situation Shared Folder is unlikely to be of use, you would need to be using a custom Dropbox Client installation to have a need to use this.

The Save option was removed at the time of Moneydance 2012. The methodology was changed with the software automatically saving the data frequently, I seem to recall it is something like 20 seconds at most. The keyboard shortcut S still exist to force a save.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480160852020-01-18T03:52:47Z2020-01-18T03:52:47Zsaving work to Dropbox

Thank you for your quick response.. I hear you on taking precautions.. too much work goes into this to lose it… especially when we have limited time to work on it.

Good idea on the external drive. I will do that.

So should I delete ALL MD apps once I do that and start over? I did purchase it a while back and recently (2-3 days ago) got a discount on the upgrade. Will I have to re-purchase it if I delete it?

Earlier today I updated some accounts, closed the app and later found that the updates weren't saved. I might not have set it up correctly. :-/ Thank goodness it was early in the year. lol!

Respectfully,

When you purchase Moneydance directly you receive an email with your license key. That key is valid for the version purchased and the next major release. Hence if you delete everything relating to Moneydance and reinstall everything or even install Moneydance on another machine that key can be used to register the installation.

Most apparent cases of data not being saved is a result of using one data set (file) then on the next occasion opening a different data set (file),

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480160852020-01-18T08:41:13Z2020-01-18T08:41:13Zsaving work to Dropbox

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Helen

Jut to add to dwg posts.

The Moneydance mobile app is free so no key to enter, the key is for computers only.
As you were used to an old version of Moneydance it’s worth noting when using Moneydance 2019 you must not store your data set on Dropbox as you might have done in the past. It could well become corrupted. Instead you use Moneydances internal sync engine, see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data
Moneydance has two backup methods, manual under EXPORT BACKUP and automatic set under PREFERENCES BACKUP. You should set both of these to use Dropbox as the backup location, in case you have a computer failure. However, if you have more than one computer make sure you use different Dropbox locations for the backups.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480160852020-01-18T19:26:37Z2020-01-18T19:26:38Zsaving work to Dropbox

Thank you so much!! I’m working on this right now.

Thank you for your quick response!

I deleted everything “Moneydance” related on MB Pro, iMac, Dropbox and library.

I re-downloaded the newest MD on iMac. I edited my categories, entered my Frost Bank accounts manually (because Frost is not set up yet..)

I synced my Wells Fargo account online (they charge extra for that, so I picked my one busiest account and manually added the others to MD. (sheesh.. banks have ridicules fees.) All accounts match the bank balances at this time. Yay!

I want to be able to save my iMac Moneydance work to Dropbox, then share the update on my laptop. How do I do that? (Babysteps)

I made a folder in my iMacDropbox (right now it is empty.) It’s going to ask me if I want “Folder” “Connection” or Shared”. I messed that up the first time, so I’m needing guidance this time (sorry for all the questions..)

After seeing this new version of MoneyDance, I’m so happy to get it back! It’s so simple to use. Ya’ll have done an awesome job! I just don’t understand the syncing connection. That’s an "operator error" - not on you, it’s on me.

Thank you in advance for your help. Really.

Respectfully,

No you definitely do not want to: "be able to save my iMac Moneydance work to Dropbox, then share the update on my laptop." That could cause data corruption.

But it does sound like you have the Dropbox client installed and use your Dropbox folder to pass the data, that is a different thing. With Moneydance now each machine has its own copy of the data on its own local disk, with something like Dropbox used to pass data between each machine. There is no longer a single copy of the data file, this solves the problem of concurrent access.

Do not create any file in your Dropbox folder Moneydance will create what it needs.

The instructions for setting up syncing can be found at:

https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data/sync...

With what you have described it sounds to me like you want to use Dropbox Folder.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480160852020-01-19T23:57:48Z2020-01-19T23:57:49Zsaving work to Dropbox

Thank you SO much for your help! I was able to set up my new Moneydance on my MacBook Pro, and it synced! Thank you.

To be clear - Any time I update MD.. on either computer, I need to sync to Dropbox, then I need to sync from the other computer to collect the info? OR does Moneydance sync changes between the two computers automatically? (Like Dropbox does?)

Example: I make entries on iMac, then sync to Dropbox.
I use Laptop and is the new info there already OR do I sync to get it from DB?

Thank you in advance..!

When you use Dropbox Folder, it means you have the Dropbox client installed. This piece of software automatically syncs between your local Dropbox folder and the Dropbox server whenever you are connected to the Internet, this should not need any involvement by you.

In this configuration, whenever Moneydance is running it is copying data to the local Dropbox folder based on what you are doing, as well it retrieves updates from the Dropbox folder based on data changes that have been made on other computers, it does this in the background.

Think of Dropbox as if it was a post office with post boxes, you want to send something you take it to the post office and put it in the send box, you want to get the mail addressed to you, you collect it from your post box. That is in simplistic terms how Moneydance is interacting when using Dropbox folder.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480160852020-01-20T13:40:01Z2020-01-20T13:40:01Zsaving work to Dropbox

Thank you! It’s working better than I had hoped.
