Recovery of deleted data file
My data file was stored in the application bundle - not sure how I managed to do that. I was cleaning up old apps and thought I had found an old Moneydance app so I deleted it. I also emptied the recycle bin. I then realised I had deleted the most up-to-date version of Moneydance, with my data file in the bundle. I now have Moneydance running again and my licence key activated. I still have data in the mobile app. I am trying to see if I can use the mobile app to help recover data on my Mac. When I try connecting Moneydance to Dropbox everything appears to connect OK, the sync process starts, but nothing happens and the progress bar never moves. Do I have any recovery options or do I need to start again?

Hi Andy
The first thing to say is your data set is not store in the same place as your Moneydance program files so may still exist.
Try clicking MONEYDANCE – OPEN to see if your data set is listed and if so open it.
If not, had you set up Moneydance auto backup under PREFERENCES – BACKUP. The default location for backups can be found under HELP – SHOW BACKUP FOLDER. If backups exist use MONEYDANCE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP to restore the latest dated backup.
As a last resort try to recover your data as follows.
Sign into your Dropbox account online and make a copy of your “.moneydancesync” folder under another name as a backup.
Open Moneydance on your computer. If Moneydance opens in the Welcome to Moneydance window click CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT SET or if Moneydance is open in a data set click FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW.
Then click OPEN SYNCED FILE. Use the dropdown to set the same sync method as you were using. Click NEXT and highlight your data set from the list. Click NEXT and enter the same encryption password (passphrase) for syncing as before and click FINISH. If your data set is synced back into your computer it will be as a second computer data set, you can’t change the sync method and need converting into a primary computer data set. Also, you may find a lot of old, maybe closed accounts or other accounts you have removed from the side bar reappearing in the side bar. Use the “+” sign at bottom of side bar then ADVANCED to tidy up the side bar.
If required I can post a procedure for converting a secondary data set into a primary data set.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks
Tried recovering from back-up, however the only file there is from the new data set I created after I lost the old one.
The final step you shared looks promising. When I connect to dropbox I can see my original data set and start syncing, however it just hangs with the screen below – any thoughts?

Hi Andy
Not really sure why syncing is not completing.
On both my Window and Linux computers I have recovered a test data set from Dropbox, but I don’t have a Mac computer. Other Mac user have followed the process, but some of them have reported it can take a very long time to complete the initial sync, not sure why.
Maybe if you post screen shots of each window you get after clicking NEW it may bring something to mind.
Also perhaps search you computer for your data set file yourdatasetname.moneydance or backup files yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydancearchive or yourdatasetname.yyyy-mm-dd.moneydancearchive in case there are some on your hard drive.
