Hello,

So after difficult learning curve , for me, I was able to sync with another computer. It has worked only once.

Both are the same versions, I have saved a sync file, I went to the other computer and selected the sync file and it opens only not synced.

I also have repeated my saving to the sync file on my computer and then over to the other computer just opened it and the same thing happens, it does not sync, missing about 4 transactions. Please tell what I am doing wrong because I can not figure this out.

Thank you

What do you mean by "I have saved a sync file" This is not something the user actually does, syncing is managed by the software, you just need to setup the environment.

The instructions for setting up syncing are in:

    https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data/syncing-with-other-computers

If you are having difficulty with the instructions it is best to document what you have done, what happens , and any error messages received.

    Hello,
    Thank you for you reply,

Followed instructions re sync file. Environment set up. Just recently ( on the other computer) when asked what file to open I pointed to the file on my computer and everything worked. But, it has to be wrong because the preferences followed. Not able to change preferences on other computer.

When asked to open I am asked to open sync file and I answer yes. This is confusing.to me. What file do I point to if not a sync file. Or leave out the sync what file do I point to on the other computer.

"I pointed to the file on my computer" on the second computer you should be pointing it to a file/folder on a shared system in the .moneydancesync folder. That could be Dropbox, a file share etc, not to a file on the first computer.

    Hi Peter.

Maybe the following notes on setting up Moneydance Sync Method Dropbox Folder with Moneydance 2019/2020 or 2021 will help.

Moneydance - Setting up Sync Method Dropbox Folder to another computer.

Make sure you have the same version/build of Moneydance installed on all computers.

You need to has a least a free Dropbox account and have installed Dropbox client on the computers to be synced.

When you sync you have a primary computer and one or more secondary computers.
The free Dropbox account only allows you to install Dropbox Client on three computers. If you need more than 3 then the extra computers can use Dropbox Connection where you don’t need to install Dropbox client.

You don’t have to be online when Moneydance is running as changes are written to your local Dropbox folder. The next time you go online the changes will be synced.

Dropbox Folder syncing method setup is as follows:

    1. Open Moneydance on your primary computer under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) - SYNCING, set your “Encryption Passphrase”, set “Sync Method” to “Dropbox Folder” and click OK.
    2. Wait for Dropbox folder “.moneydancesync” and its contents to be created in your Dropbox folder. This can take some time. Watch the Dropbox icon and wait till it states “Up to Date”. Then wait until the same Dropbox folder appears on your second computer, again watch the Dropbox icon this time on your second computer and wait till it states “Up to Date”. From now on normal syncing is fast, no need to wait or check. Note: on a Mac if “.moneydancesync” is hidden, try in your Finder window, typing CMD-Shift-G and then pasting ~/Dropbox/.moneydancesync/ into the box to unhide.
    3. On your second computer starting Moneydance should open it in the welcome window, click on “Create a new account set”. Or if it opens in to an existing account click FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) - NEW
    4. Select “Open Synced File” and use dropdown to select “Dropbox Folder” then click NEXT.
    5. You should see a search screen headed “Finding synced files” then “Select a synced document to open”
    6. Highlight the data set name you won’t to sync with and click NEXT.
    7. Enter the encryption password, the “Encryption Passphrase” you set on your primary computer under FILE – SYNCING.
    8. Then click on FINISH. You should see the message “Performing initial sync this may take a while”.
    9. Wait to syncing is complete.
You may find a lot of old, maybe closed accounts or other accounts you have removed from the side bar reappearing in the second computers side bar. Use the “+” sign at bottom of side bar then ADVANCED to tidy up the side bar.

If you have any issues define the step with the problem and state exactly what you see in detail.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello,

I have 2 computers, different rooms. Using verizon modem/router. Both computers see each other on my small network.

When I need to move picture or file to the other computer I just connect to the computer and drag it over. No server, etc..

So when I open Moneydance from the other computer I choose the file that is located on my computer and all is well. But it really is not. This is wrong.for so many reasons even though it works. As per instructions the preferences on the other computer can not be changed, etc..

No where in the instructions does it specify the file to access only the synced file, which is done on my computer but the other one doesn’t recognize it I don’t have an answer for that

    Hi Peter.

The setup you are trying to use as you have found leads to problems. It could also corrupt your data set, meaning you will not be able to open it next time.

To prevent data corruption Moneydance has developed an internal sync engine. This engine is designed to would with a cloud server such as a free Dropbox account. The data is end to end encrypted with the key only being held on your computer not in the cloud.

Add a transaction on one device and it should appear on the other devices within 60 seconds.

You should open a free Dropbox account, install Dropbox client in the default location on your hard drive on your computers and set up syncing as follows.

Make sure you have the same version/build of Moneydance installed on all computers.

When you sync you have a primary computer and one or more secondary computers.

The free Dropbox account only allows you to install Dropbox Client on three computers. If you need more than 3 then the extra computers can use Dropbox Connection where you don’t need to install Dropbox client.

You can also sync to mobile devices such as phones. The free app is available from Play Store, or Apple Store. The setup is as follows.
    1. On your phone once the Moneydance app is installed, open the app, then tap "Connect to Dropbox" or Dropbox icon.
    2. You'll be taken to Dropbox's website to give the Moneydance app permission to access your Dropbox.
If you're already connected to Dropbox on your device, this may be done automatically.
    3. If you have more than one file enabled to sync via Dropbox, choose the file you'd like to sync.
    4. Enter the Encryption Password (“Encryption Passphrase”) that you used to sync on your computers.
    5. It can take a long time to for the first sync to complete, perhaps leave overnight if necessary.

You can now view, edit and add transaction to your Bank and credit card type accounts. You don’t get access to investment account reminders, reports etc. It’s just a simple method of adding transaction when you’re out and about.

    Hope this helps.

If you have only 2 computers on a simple network, why go the the trouble syncing via dropbox when you can use a program like FreeFileSync or other sync app to keep both computers in sync?
Or am I missing something in your situation?

    Hi cdr

Moneydance save every small file each time there ids a transaction. So lots of small files to sync at small time intervals. Most syncing app can’t cope with such frequent updates, hence corruption of data. Maybe FreeFileSync can, I don’t know. The point is nor do the Moneydance developers. By using their own sync engine and the know cloud server approach Moneydance can say to its users, this is a safe method.

    Hope this helps.

In a small home environment it is also possible to use a file server as the data exchange machine.

Tools like FreeFileSync could only be used when Moneydance is not running and it is really up to you to keep the data in sync.

The internal syncing engine is design to do that and also facilitate simultaneous use of the data bu maintaining a local copy of the data and exchange updates when a user makes changes. There are no contention issues, it also removes the possibility of user error in the process.

    Hi there,
Freefile sync. Does not work. All I want to do is use the shared folder between both computers. When I first configured it all was fine, then after a few days nothing worked. Something wrong w/ internal engine? I tried starting all over, nothing

    Hi Peter.

There is nothing wrong with the Moneydance sync engine if you use it as intended.

I think the replies in this discussion have made it clear using freefile sync is unlikely to work and can corrupt your data.

If you want to sync get a free Dropbox account and follow the instructions already posted to you.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello

Ok dropbox opened on both computers went to the file and sync file, dropbox folder. And all I get is a ‘bell’ like its complete, and nothing else. The bell is really quick, by the time my finger comes off the key its sounding. No file appears in dropbox

Ok. I’ve done exactly what you want.

1/ create a dedicated folder anywhere on your server. Perhaps called MoneydanceSync.
2/ in your primary computer go to MD/menu/file/syncing
3/ select shared folders and enter a passphrase (remember this)
4/ wait 10 mins, then check the new folder is populated with lot of folders/data
5/ on the secondary computer do MD/menu/file NEW. Select open synced data. Select the first folder within the MoneydanceSync folder. It should recognise the dataset, use the remembered passphrase, select dataset and then done/ok/Continue.

    That’s it.

    Hi Peter.

Either follow Stuarts advice or read on.

The feed back “all I get is a ‘bell’ like its complete, and nothing else” is an indication of what the issue is.

Sign into tour Dropbox account online and create the folder “.moneydancesync” in the Dropbox folder, don’t forget the period before the m

See screen shot (taken on a Windows 10 computer, may look different on other operating systems). Click ALL FILES then in the + CREATE dropdown – select FOLDER – and name the folder .moneydancesync - CREATE – click ALL FILES and you should now see the folder .moneydancesync

Check your can now see the “.moneydancesync” folder in the Dropbox folder on both your computers.

Follow the process again at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/iphone-ipod-touch-ip...

    Hope this helps.

Well, thank you to both of you I did both instructions, nothing was working and took a break. When I came back I changed something in md closed it went to the other computer told it to get the synced file, computer said no such thing. Ok so I closed it all. Went back to my computer checked dropbox saw the file but it was not showing up on the other computer. So I ’shared the screen' with the other computer and lo and behold it was working. Closed all. And checked both computers, making a few changes to the file here and there and all was fine.
I don’t have any answer as to what was wrong or what changed. it’s possible I didn’t wait long enough for things to load or whatever, I do not know.
Thank you all for your patience

But thanks to u guys all is well, sorry I don’t have any technical answer to the problem. I don’t know how long this will last but right now it’s fine.Thank you all for your patience and have a happy holiday
