Android App Borked After Update
I updated to the latest version of the Android app this week and now all my accounts are wrong. Most seem to be stuck in 2017. Plus there are accounts there that I no longer use. I know the data on Dropbox is good since I have no issues with syncing between my desktop and laptop computers.
Also, the upgrade removed the PIN. Not cool. Can we please have at least a little security focus?

I also am having trouble after the Android app upgrade. I seem to be stuck in the "initial sync" phase and it never completes. I am happy to report more or test more if support staff need it. I did notice that I could add the pin back to the app in the settings (assuming you can get to that page).

+1 having trouble seems stuck at end 2017 in continuously syncing phase. Worked perfectly well before so this is not a good update.

Adding I'm now into 2019 after 8 hours so there is still some movement. I live in hope it could sync.
4 Posted by keith on 25 May, 2021 06:26 PM
Mine finally finished and got up to date, but took MANY hours to do so.
5 Posted by dewd on 25 May, 2021 07:19 PM
I'm up to July 2018. At least it's syncing.
My question is why? I don't care about 2018 or even 2020 on my phone. I only use it for CURRENT transactions. Tell me what I have in the bank and let me enter transactions. I really don't want my entire 30 year history on my phone.

Dropbox folder is much quicker than dropbox connection....

I'm having the same problem with the initial sync. I get to 2017, but then the app just crashes. Then the initial sync starts over again. At this point, the app is essentially useless, and having the mobile app is the primary reason I chose Moneydance. Please either roll-back the app or provide steps for a workaround immediately.

Is it possible to get help for this issue?
9 Posted by Javier Sanchez on 27 May, 2021 03:07 AM
I found a temporary workaround by doing a full new sync to dropbox.
The issue seems to be that synching with 100s of small old transaction files gets the mobile version stuck. By doing a fresh sync, moneydance makes a single large file (13 Mb in my case with 6 yrs transactions) with all the old transactions and things work again
1 - set moneydance desktop not to sync
2 - delete moneydance folder in dropbox and wait till it syncs the deletions with the cloud and everything is gone
3 - delete all data in mobile app
4 - set sync on desktop again to dropbox, wait till everything is synch to dropbox cloud.
5 - set up sync in mobile app. It just takes a few minutes and everything seems to be fine.

Javier's solution worked nicely for me. Thanks

Agreed. Javier's solution worked for me as well and was much quicker to do the initial sync. Apparently data just needs a reset to work best with the new app version.

I am unable to resolve this by the methods suggested. I have two Android devices that no longer have a functioning Moneydance. The IDevice I have works fine, but it's not convenient.

Javier's solution worked. After resetting the sync from my desktop Android synced in just a few minutes. Thank you. Maybe someday IK will be as responsive....

That worked for me as well, looks like all back up and running again

Unfortunately, it didn't work for. When I login into DB, the app says no folders found. Suggestions anyone?
Thanks

@Kerri.maharaj
After resetting the sync to dropbox in the desktop, make sure dropbox has finished uploading to the cloud the files created by the desktop. Open the cloud version of dropbox and ensure folder .monedydancesync and contents are there. After that you should be able to sync to the phone

UPDATE:
I still found two glitches after synching with my method above:
1 - from time to time it gets an error: unable to to resolve host. I leave the app open for a while, and it syncs again. It doesn't always work, next solution is to close completely and reopen app. It works.
2 - This morning the app refused to open several times, like crashing. I closed it completely and it opened again and it works
Obviously this update is very buggy. I hope IK can provide a working update asap.

IK - if you are listening and monitoring this:
The problem seems to be that old moneydance databases have 1000s of files for each transaction and the android version seems to get stuck processing those files. When doing a fresh sync to dropbox, the desktop version consolidates all those 1000s of files into a single one and that solves the problem.
Maybe there's a timeout function for the connection built into the code? (that may also be the cause of the unable to resolve host).
A couple of ideas to solve this problem now and future releases:
1 - Have the desktop version to consolidate old transactions every X time or every X transactions into a single file. I think this is the easiest solution to implement.
2 - Only sync the last X months. I believe that everyone is using the app just to enter transactions and check account balances, because beyond that there's no much functionality in it. So limiting the import range will avoid problems and speed up synching.
This may be more difficult because the dropbox database contains all transactions to synch with any device. As far as I can see, the mobile version also grabs all transactions to calculate the balances accurately.
A workaround for this problem could be to have 2 databases, one with all transactions for all devices (desktops) and another for mobile where for each account there's a balance for the closing date of period X to synch (eg 6 months ago) and then the transactions after that date. Because of this problem, solution 1 seems to be the easiest one to implement.

I am not support staff just a user.
Hi
Another thing to consider.
The reason the Beta takes longer to initially sync is unlike the older version which only receive Bank type data build 76 gets all data as a prelude to expanding the features in the mobile app.

Hi
Sean the Moneydance developer is aware and on the case.

Hi Javier,
Yes, the new version syncs the entire data set that is used by the desktop app. After it downloads the individual files, the android app consolidates them into a single file. Of course it needs to actually finish syncing to get to do the consolidation. We're working on making this faster and more reliable to get past this initial transition phase.
Thanks,
Sean

I renamed the .moneydance folder to .moneydance.old. I then opened Moneydance on my desktop, added a new entry and closed it. It synched. I then had on trouble connecting the android app to the latest synch.
23 Posted by dewd on 28 May, 2021 01:55 PM
r.j.rizzuto - I believe you have to stop the sync on the desktop then rename or delete the dropbox folder. When you restart they sync it creates a new file.
Support Staff 24 Posted by Sean Reilly on 28 May, 2021 02:25 PM
Thanks R.J.Rizzuto for this idea. I think the file you'd have to rename (while Moneydance is *not* running!) would be the ".moneydancesync" folder under dropbox. You can get to that most easily via this link: https://www.dropbox.com/home/.moneydancesync
Thanks,
Sean

Correct, I renamed the .moneydancesync folder. That way, if I messed up, I could always
rename it back.

Thanks everyone for your help. Ultimately, the issue is I was using a 2015 version of MD but the app needs 2017 or later. I upgraded to 2017 and had to correct some data duplications. I even then paid the half-price to upgrade to 2021 because I might as well go to the latest version.
Afterwards, the app and syncing worked perfectly. Hope this helps.

When I open my app version it now shows a list on bank accounts and has several that say finances 0.00 and also has a restored file. When I click on the restored file, it shows 2 transactions, one is wrong. It no longer populates the screen with a list of current transactions and my balance. Does not even give me an option to add a new transaction into either of my bank accounts. Just can add to the account called restored.

I am sorry but this is a major problem. I'm using a Mac for the desktop app V 2021.1 and a Huawei P20 to which to sync, and it fails 100% of the time, producing a mythical "Restored-Long Hexadecimal number" account with some recent transactions Duplicated as Subtractions AND Additions in subsequent lines. Our Samsung Tab A's (two of them) now will not show the correct Icon nor will they sync correctly. I have removed and reinstalled the App on all the devices with no change.
Infinite Kind - Please sort it.
It's now getting embarrassing..... for you!

Oh I nearly forgot - The iPad version works.... not a problem. So what's changed with Android? Is this a back-office change in Android that is the issue here?

I tried Javier's solution. That was fast. After 5 min of "performing initial sync" app crashed. Repeated again, crashed again.
Android 11, Pixel 3a. All updates applied.
