Can no longer sync with Android

Starting about a week ago, I get the message "Performing initial sync. This may take a while" on my Android device. But it doesn't take "a while", it takes forever.

This is what I've done:
- restarted Moneydance on PC
- restarted MoneyDance on Android device
- restarted the Android device
- reinstalled Moneydance on Android device
- updated Moneydance on PC to the most recent version (2021)

At some point, I noticed that Moneydance requests access to Dropbox, but nothing happens when I click the blue "Allow" button.

    Hi Peer

    The reason Moneydance Android apps build 76 takes a long time to do an initially sync, a understatement in some cases, is, unlike the older version which only receive Bank type data build 76 gets all data as a prelude to expanding the features in the mobile app. Also 76 displays all bank type transactions, same as on the computer, back to when each account was opened. 1.15 only displays back 1 year. All in all, a lot of data.
    My Android is syncing without issues on build 76 but I think this is due to the fact I was running a beta and all my data had already been synced to my phone before the update to 76
    The situation is made far worse if you have not reset Moneydance sync lately, a lot of small files to sync.
    Sean the Moneydance developer is aware and working on a fix to speed things up. In the meantime, I think you need to reset syncing to start anew.

    If you are not sure how to reset syncing then post a list of your devices that you are syncing, there operating systems, plus the version and build of Moneydance on your computers e.g. 2021.1(3069) see under HELP – ABOUT MONEYDANCE as well as the Moneydance sync method you are using Dropbox Folder or Dropbox Connection.

    To resetting syncing proceed as follows.

    1. In Moneydance do a MONEYDANCE – EXPORT BACKUP in case something goes wrong.

    2. On your Phone in Moneydance under setting disconnect if connected turn off phone.

    3. In Moneydance under MONEYDANCE – SYNCING set SYNC METHOD to DON’T SYNC, then click OK.

    4. In the Dropbox Folder on your computer move the “.moneydancesync” folder to anther location outside Dropbox. If all goes well this can be deleted later. Wait to Dropbox icon sates up to date.

    5. On your computer under MONEYDANCE - SYNCING, set your “Encryption Passphrase”, set “Sync Method” to Dropbox Folder, click OK.

    6. Wait for Dropbox folder “.moneydancesync” and its contents to be created and the Dropbox icon states up to date. This can take some time.

    7. Start the Moneydance app on your phone. You may be asked to sign in to your Dropbox account to allow Moneydance to access Dropbox if this is the first time the device has done this. The mobile app will search for your data set to sync. On the completion of the search you should see your current data set listed. Select this to sync. You will then be asked to enter you Encryption Password, the passphrase you entered on your computer FILE – SYNCING. After you have entered the password click BEGIN SYNCING. The initial sync can take a long time.

    Have problems with #3, have no option to change any sync settings (see attached screenshot).

    This is serious. The mobile app no longer works, it's not a question of that it takes a long time, it never finishes syncing.

    Is there a way to revert to the previous version of the mobile app?

    Toolbox extension allows you to promote a secondary dataset to a primary (in advanced mode) and then you can change the sync settings.

    Hi Peer

    The inability to perform step 3 has nothing to do with the Android app.

    On your computer do an EXPORT - BACKUP in case something goes Wrong.
    If not now then at some point in the past were must have been syncing between computers.

    When you sync between computers you first set up one computer as the primary computer under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – SYNCING. You then set up any number of secondary computers to sync using FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE.

    You can change the syncing method on a primary data set or a Moneydance backup restored from a primary data set.

    With a secondary data set the syncing method is fixed, greyed out and cannot be change. You get the same result after restoring a secondary computer Moneydance backup. Make sure the auto backups for the primary and secondary computers are not set to use the same location if you are say using Dropbox.

    If you don’t have a Primary data set you can convert a secondary data set to a primary data set using Stuarts Toolbox or using the following process.

    To convert a secondary data set to a primary data set you need to run the attached script in Moneydance 2019/2020 and 2021.
    With your data set open click WINDOW - SHOW MONEYBOT CONSOLE use OPEN SCRIPT to select the script and click RUN. Wait for the script to complete its run, it can take a minute. Close and reopen Moneydance. You should now be able to change the syncing method.

    You should now be able to perform step 3.

    Hi, using Stuart's toolbox to convert the dataset to primary, and your step-by.step guide, I managed to resolve the issue.

    I am quite disappointed that I had to go thru all this trouble to fix a problem that occurred after an update, but I am very happy for the support provided by you guys!
