Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

No, it means that you can sync as many computers as you wish as long as you are using the same iCloud account on each of them.

When you are using Dropbox for instance, you can double click on the folder called .moneydancesync and select the downward arrow next to Share (on the right hand side of the screen) to add a different Dropbox account.
The same does not apply to iCloud.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Thank you for your response (below). I am trying to sync 3 mac computers containing MoneyDance. Two of them I got to work, but when I tried to invoke the “new account” on the third computer, I was asked for an encryption code that I must have used for the second computer, but access for which I no longer seem to possess. Is there any way of finding out what that encryption code might be?

Thanks.

Then, navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions->Install Toolbox
Launch the Toolbox and select MENU: General tools, choose Display Dataset Password/Hint and Sync Passphrase, finally select Proceed and your passphrase will be shown in the yellow window.

Thanks for quick response. Much appreciated. On which computer do I do the “extensions check”? Is it the main computer (whose files I want to sync) or the 2nd computer? When I do what you suggested on my main computer, this is what I get:
'Master' Encryption Passphrase ('password'): (NOT SET - this means a default 'internal' encryption passphrase is being used) Sync Passphrase: (NOT SET)

Thanks.

Alternatively you can launch Moneydance on the computer where your data file is stored and navigate to File->Syncing->Show Passphrase.
If I understood correctly, it is only one computer you cannot access, so you should be able to retrieve the Passphrase in this way, from the other.

If you cannot find the Passphrase after all but you have at least one up-to-date file saved on one of your computers, please let us know and we will send you the steps to set up sync anew.

My Toolbox extension reveals the following problem. How do I fix it?

Potential improper opening of backup files

Alert: detected multiple dates in dataset filename

This might mean you're opening backup (*.moneydancearchive) files by double-clicking ...and this may be creating a new dataset everytime as a result... and so on....

If so, please correct your file opening procedure << (But, if you're happy with your procedure & dataset name, then ignore this alert)

When you are in register view, click on Summary and on the top left you should see the name of your data file. If you see that followed by numbers, you have opened a backup file.

If from the same screen, you navigate to Moneydance menu/File->Open your data files will be listed there.
You can also, navigate to Window->Welcome to Moneydance and in the resulting window select the file you want and choose When Starting->Re-Open Last File.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Alternatively, you can choose File --> Restore from Backup (or 'Import New Account Set' from the Welcome window). Then navigate to and select the backup file.

When you restore data from a backup file, a new data file will be created for use going forward. So, this could be a problem if you are syncing your data file with other devices, for instance. (In short: you would have to reset sync!).

If the restored data file is in the default location, it's accessible from Moneydance via Help --> Show Documents Folder.

Any data files stored here are accessible from the program by choosing File --> Open. Any files you've created or restored will be listed here.

If you'd like to re-name the restored file, you can follow the steps in this article from the knowledge base.

It's important you close the Moneydance program fully before you make any changes.

Then change the data file name to whatever you want - just be sure to retain the .moneydance file extension at the end of the file name.
