Why can't I use Google drive instead of dropbox for syncing with my android device

It would give the app more utility since not ewveryone has or wants a dropbox account.

    If you can add GDrive as a virtual folder in Finder/Explorer then it should be possible. Use MD ‘shared folders’ and point it at the GDrive.

    Note that Google Drive does not work with mobile devices. The mobile app only supports API access whereas other devices support any type of shared folder.
