Dropbox/One Drive sync?

I use Moneydance for quite a while now and I really love it.
So far sync with DropBox, and that works well with my Windows PC, my iPhone and my iPad.
I have two questions:
1) I was thinking to sync with OneDrive in the future instead, I tried with the Windows PC, and it works, but it looks like I can't with my iPhone and/or iPad, both show me only iCloud and DropBox as options. So I switched back to DropBox. I do not use iCloud at all, but all my files and data are on One Drive, just Moneydance not yet.
Looks like that would not work???

2) I went through all the files in the Moneydance sync folder in DropBox, just out of curiosity, and I noticed a bunch of files with "...conflicted copy..." in the file name (see attached screenshot file). Can't I delete those "conflicted copies"??

Any help would be appreciated

    A few points

    - Mobile devices are only supported with Dropbox or iCloud
    - iCloud only works in a totally Apple ecosystem, there is no Moneydance Windows support for iCloud and it does not work.

Hence OneDrive will only work with desktop systems. You cannot mix syncing options, so all devices have to use the same syncing environment. with a mix of Microsoft and Apple devices you will have to use Dropbox.

Conflicted copies suggests there may been setup problems at some stage. Initially I would be inclined to move those files out of the folder, then ensure everything is working as it should before taking further action.

Hi there - I have seen a few conflicted copy files, too. I am curious what you mean by setup problems. My Dropbox sync among several Macs (no iOS devices) was working perfectly for months before the conflicted copies appeared.

And what do you mean by taking them out of the folder and ensuring everything is working? How do I know all is working? The syncing seems to be proceeding okay despite the presence of the conflicted copies. How would I know what is “off”? I have lots of accounts and it is hard to tell.

    Thanks.

I was thinking of setup in a broad context of system setup and operation, not specifically Moneydance's setup.

The files referenced are relatively old suggesting they are not in use. My suggestion to move them is being conservative in the approach taken, as I said I do not expect that the files would be in use.

These files are not ones that Moneydance has created, they would have been created by Dropbox, the names indicate there is some sort of "conflict" occurring so Dropbox has created a copy.

By everything working I mean that syncing is occurring as expected, transactions and changes are appearing across systems and of course account balances are correct.

    Thank you for the response.
Although I use Microsoft Office on my iPhone and iPad, and with that Word,
Excel, Outlook and One Drive, it surprises me that Moneydance does not sync
to Once Drive, while all other MS files I have set to save to One Drive, but
    it is what it is.

Looking at the dates of those conflicting copies, they could be from times
when I got a new computer, my new iPad and iPhone. I will give it a careful
try and move those copies out of that folder, see what happens and if
everything looks fine, I will delete them for good.

I see! This is very helpful. I did not realize that the conflict files were created by Dropbox. I assumed that Moneydance created them. So the test would be to move the conflicted files out of the sync directory and see if the sync is fine?

I suspect it will be fine (since the balances currently agree), but what would I do with the conflicted files if they did not agree?

As a side note, is it generally understood how Dropbox could encounter conflicts like this? E.g. could this happen if the same transaction is downloaded from the same bank on different platforms, before either of them had a chance to sync to Dropbox? Would that transaction have the same file name, hence causing a conflict when both platforms sync?

I do not download transactions from any bank, all my transactions are put in
manually and only by me. I tried only once to add a transaction while on
either iPad or iPhone, so that could have created ONE of these files, but
not that many. I never have the program open on more than one device at the
time. I remember I had to remember syn in settings from my laptop, as I
cannot sync to more than 3 devices without paying for DropBox, so I kept it
on iPhone, iPad and Desktop PC. If my Desktop would die I would remove that
and change it to Laptop. I might have done that a few times. Could that be
    the reason?

    Hi Anne

The Dropbox restrictions maybe not as bad as they first sound.

The limit of 3 devices running Dropbox applications with a free account applies to the devices that can be connected to a Dropbox product itself, via official Dropbox applications, such as the official Dropbox desktop client or mobile applications.

If your computers are using Dropbox Folder as a syncing method for Moneydance then as you have to have Dropbox Client installed, this count towards the limit. However, if you use Dropbox Connection and don’t have Dropbox Client installed, this does not count towards the limit. This limit does not apply to third party apps that connect to Dropbox via the Dropbox API. This includes the Dropbox Application Program Interface that is embedded in Moneydance mobile. Moneydance Mobile uses Dropbox connection so does not count towards the limit unless Dropbox official app is installed on your mobile devices for another reason.
You can also mix Moneydance Dropbox sync Methods on computers, say 3 computers using Dropbox Folder and any additional computers using Dropbox Connection. You can also sync a many mobile devices as you like. Another approach is to set up another free Dropbox account under a different email address and set up the Moneydance folder “.moneydancesync” as a shared folder between the two accounts.

You are not facing any real restriction, with no need for a paid Dropbox account.

You can run Moneydance simultaneously on as many devices as you like. Add a transaction on one device and in 60 seconds it will appear on the other devices

    Hope this helps.

derekkent 23, you made my day, and that big light came on in my head. You
explained it so well that there is a different sync with Apple devices like
iPhone and iPad and Windows devise like my laptop and my desktop.
First of all, I deleted the "conflicting copies", restarted Moneydance and
the desktop, everything was fine afterwards.

Then I looked ion my Dropbox account at it showed 3 linked devices: iPhone,
iPad and Windows desktop. I took a leap pf faith and deleted the two Apple
devices, added my laptop, which I had disconnected from DropBox a while ago,
because of the 3 device limit.

Opened Moneydance on iPhone and iPad and everything was just fine, closed
both and reopened them, they sync just fine.
That's when that light came on in my head that there is a difference between
"shared folder" and "DropBox connection" in the Drop Box Settings.
My two Windows devices now show "shared folder", seems to be all right that
    way.
My two Apple devices show sync: Dropbox with the option to disconnect.

I cannot thank you enough! I can now access Moneydance on all 4 devices.
    Thank you again!
