Syncing using iCloud
Hello
At the moment, I'm using Moneydance 2024.2 (5172) and I use DropBox for syncing. I use iOS 15.1 Sequoia. I am thinking about switching to syncing through iCloud (I want to add another computer which would force me to purchase a paid subscription for DropBox as I am at my limit of 3).
In looking through the Known Problems section, and I see that for Mac OS Sonoma 14.0 there is a warning to not use iCloud and use DropBox instead (https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/known-problems/mac-os-sonoma-140).
Can anyone provide input as to the preference is still avoid iCloud syncing and go with DropBox. I would hate to switch and then have to switch back to DropBox.
Thank you

Apple have changed the way iCloud works and now use dataless files. This does not work well with Moneydance as it means that more on demand downloads are required, this affects performance.
The three devices Dropbox limit is not really a hindrance.
It only applies to devices that have the Dropbox client installed to start with, the client is not used with mobile devices with Moneydance so they do not count unless you load the client for another reason.
You can use the Dropbox Connection method on the desktop/notebook which also does not require the client and thus does not use a Dropbox connection license.
You can setup multiple free Dropbox accounts and use Dropbox data sharing to work around the limit.

Thank you so much for that information. For some reason I thought that DropBox had to be installed on all the computers.
When using the Dropbox Connection, does the client have to be installed on any computer?
Thank you again

When you use the Dropbox connection option on a machine you do not need the client to be installed, Moneydance will not use it.
No client installed = no connection license used.

FWIW you can mix machines with Dropbox Connection and Dropbox Folder in the one solution

Interesting thread, especially as I have just come to Moneydance. Is this issue with iCloud going to be resolved or will I have to use Dropbox for the foreseeable future?

With Sequoia Apple have introduced a setting in iCloud that may help. There is an option to "Keep Download" with an iCloud folder and it is thought this may replace the on demand downloads with a more Moneydance friendly approach. I am not aware of how much testing it has received to determine if there is any improvement.
