Need more information on syncing procedure

I'm following the instructions on "Syncing with Other Computers" and need some help.

On the Enable Syncing > shared folder step, it gives me the dialog for user documents, but I don't see anything that looks like a valid selection. What folder is it looking for?

By the way, I'm doing this because MS announced they are going to sunset Win10. So, I'm switching over to Linux-Mint, but will be accessing the MD database from both computers for a while.

I assume the folder is on my local drive. Do I need to copy something to the linux server so the other computer can find it? Thanks for the help.

Unless you are going to try and implement your own syncing solution you do not point Moneydance to a local folder.

You need a file share on your Linux server that both client machines can read/write to.

This file share is what you point shared folder to. Moneydance itself will populate the share with data.

    Hi dlbrett

One of my laptops runs Linux Feren OS. I used to use Linux Mint.
In both cases I installed Dropbox from the Linux Store
The name of the app is Nautilus Dropbox

    Hope this helps.

@dwg - That's correct, I'm not doing my own syncing, but I still need to know which folder to pick when it asks me to select a shared folder. None of the folders under "Documents" makes sense.

@derekkent23 - I was just following the instruction; didn't know there was a linux version of dropbox. Is that a better solution? By the way, why did you switch away from Mint?

    Hi dlbrett

The Moneydance sync method Shared Folder requires you to create a folder, say Moneydance Sync, on a Shared drive. The shared drive is one of the cloud servers you have access to on all of the computers you want to sync. I tried Dropbox, OneDrive, P Drive and Google Drive. To sync between my Linux and Windows computers I have tried Google Drive and Dropbox as these are the two cloud servers I have set up on both Linux and Windows. I the end I used Dropbox with the Moneydance sync method Dropbox Folder not Shared Drive.

As for the Linux distribution I have tried Ubuntu, Mint and Feren OS. I did not like Ubuntu, Mint was fine, but I personally found Feren OS better. It just felt slicker. All three distributions worked with Dropbox.

    Hope this helps.

The main reasons to use Dropbox would be because you also would want to sync your data with the Moneydance mobile app, or possibly to simplify the process of using an internet based syncing system. With the Shared Folder option, you would have to choose a location which both of your computers could access. This could be on your local home network, or it could be a folder on each computer that is synced through a syncing service of your choice. If the latter sounds too difficult to set up, I'd recommend following the Dropbox instructions, since those will take care of most things like the syncing location issues.

Yes, there is a Linux version of Dropbox. Support for multiple operating systems is one of the main reasons we've built in Dropbox syncing support for over a decade. https://www.dropbox.com/install-linux

Personally I've been using Linux Mint for several years on my main system. The instructions we've given however should be the same regardless of operating system.

Sorry for going quiet on you, I had to sort out some network issues with new instance of Linux-Mint. I ended up using sshfs instead of samba for access to my file server...long story.

By the way, years ago, I learned that I should store anything I didn't want to loose on the Linux box instead of the windows box. The commonly available location for MD syncing is the file server I just mentioned; an instance of Linux-Mate.

I got the win10 instance to do syncing simply by picking a directory on the Linux-Mate box, and then entering a passphrase. I looks like the win10 instance is writing to that location, which is:

    ~/myusername/mondydance

I installed MD (Version 2021 (2006)) on the new Linux-Mint instance. Upon startup, it offers several choices: Create new, Import new, Get help, or, Open Other. I tried Open other, and navigated to that directory, but it didn't do anything after I picked it (went back to the prior menu). Where did I go wrong?

The option to use is to Create a New Account Set, then on the next screen select to Open Synced File, this allows you to point at the shared data and from this create a local copy, as well as linking to this as being the shared location to be used to post and retrieve updates.

Never directly open the shared data files.

Thanks, that worked and I can see my accounts. I tried to register it, using the registration key from the win10 help screen, but it wouldn't accept it. Do I have to get a different key?

Moneydance license are valid across all systems but they are version specific. If a key is not working it suggests you have installed a difference version of the software.

Also when syncing you should have the same version and build on all systems.

I checked the About dialog on Win10, it says Version: 2021 (2006). The linux diallog says Version 2024 (5253), so that probably explains it.

Can I simply uninstall the 2024 verstion on the Linux-mint box and re-install the older version, or would it better to upgrade the win10 box to 2024?

If the 2021 version is meeting your needs, then yes, you can uninstall the 2024 version and install the 2021 version, which should accept your existing license key: https://infinitekind.com/previous-versions-of-moneydance

Alternatively, since you purchased a previous version of Moneydance you are entitled to a discounted half-priced upgrade, and if you want to run Moneydance 2024 you will need to purchase an upgrade key. To confirm your license for a discounted upgrade, submit your license key using the Upgrading field on our purchase page at: http://infinitekind.com/purchase

Thanks for the information, I uninstalled the 2024 version and installed the 2021 version. The license worked and syncing seems to be working. I may still upgrade, but will try the existing system for the moment.
