iphone app not starting

I just installed the Moneydance app on my iPhone 3GS. When I try running the app, I get a blank screen showing just the normal iPhone status bar (connectivity, time, battery) at the top. After about 10 seconds, the app quits. I've restarted the iPhone, restarted my computer, restarted the iPhone again, uninstalled and reinstalled the Moneydance app, restarted the iPhone yet again - still can't get anything but the blank screen. Any thoughts?

In case it matters, on my computer I'm running build 748 with the netsync extension installed.

OK - I just tried turning WiFi off on my iPhone - now the app starts up properly to the long key with the message to add netsync and add my device. Of course, that's not much good since the iPhone isn't connected to the WiFi network....

But there's some hangup in the app recognizing my WiFi network, I guess. I've got QWest internet and a TimeCapsule. Both have their own wireless networks. I've had no luck starting the app with my iPhone connected to either network.

    Bsc,

Ah, well this is one part of issue. The iPhone must be on the same wireless network as your computer for the app to function. Our lead developer Sean also suggests that you uninstall the app, and then re-install it from the app store (through your phone). Please let me know how it goes so we can look for other solutions if necessary.

Please let me know how I can be of further assistance,

You misunderstood. The only way I can get the iPhone app to start properly is by turning WiFi off in my iPhone settings - which of course defeats the purpose of the app. As long as the iPhone is connected to a WiFi network, starting the Moneydance app only results in a blank screen for about 10 seconds and then quitting back to the iPhone home screen.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Moneydance app twice now. I've restarted the iPhone three times now. No luck. Not knowing anything about what the app does on startup, the symptoms seem to me to indicate that my WiFi network is set up in some way that the Moneydance app doesn't expect - is that a possibility?

You are right, I did misunderstand the WiFi issue. Would you let me know what kind of wifi network you are using (b/g/n), the type of router (if you know), and iPhone OS (from the Settings->General->About on iphone) you are running? This will assist us in diagnosing this issue

    Thank you,

I have one wireless network through my DSL modem from QWest: Motorola Netopia 3347, 802.11 b+g

I have another wireless network through a Time Capsule, set on 802.11n (b/g compatible), in bridge mode so IP addresses should be on the same network as the DSL modem.

I've tried opening the app with the iPhone connected to WiFi via the DSL modem and via the Time Capsule, and I've tried turning off the Time Capsule so the DSL modem WiFi is the only network available. If I turn off both the Time Capsule and the DSL modem, then the app starts up correctly - but of course then I have no WiFi connection. As long as the iPhone is connected to one of my WiFi networks, the app won't start. I suppose I could go to a Starbucks or somewhere and see if the app will start on a different network, but I don't have time to do that right now.

    Well....

My problem is resolved, although the issue with my WiFi may still come up for other users.

After I posted my last note, I realized I have another WiFi option: create a computer-to-computer network with my computer. With my iPhone connected to the computer-to-computer network, the Moneydance app started correctly, I was able to add it in the computer's Moneydance Network Sync Settings, and everything synced correctly. I then switched back to the DSL modem wireless network and the app still works, it syncs correctly both ways with the computer, and I'm happy.

So - there's a workaround for the problem. I'm willing to uninstall the Moneydance app in case you think you might have a fix for the original problem that you want me to test. From my end, unless I lose the sync capability that's I now have, I'm happy with the workaround.

Thanks for the getting back to us and for the description of the work around. Currently this is the only case of this particular problem and we have not been able to reproduce it on our test machines. My best guess is that there is something about your network configuration that is preventing the bonjour service discovery messages from being propagated correctly. And when you had a computer to computer connection what ever was blocking the messages was no longer present.

I am curious to see what IP address your iphone was given on your local network when compared to your mac. There is a free iphone app called "Network Ping Lite" that will tell you your IP address. You can determine the ip address of your mac by bringing up a command prompt ant typing "ipconfig".

I am sorry for the trouble this has caused you.

    Sincerely

According to my DSL router setup page, the computer is 192.168.0.76, the iPhone is 192.168.0.74

    Is that what you mean?

Well they look like they are on the same subnet. If you run ipconfig from a command prompt you can see the subnet mask. Typically this will be 255.255.255.0 on a home network. This should be the same on both devices. There is a free iphone app called ipconfig that you can use to see the subnet mask on the iphone.

I'm having the same issue. When I start the app with my wireless on I get a blank screen. Turn it off and I get the key with instructions about using the extension.

I haven't tried to setup a peer to peer (pc (dell latitude e6400) to iphone 3gs) wireless network yet (that would be a real pain).

I use a Cisco wireless router b/g and my laptop is connecting with g.

    Help?

For those of you who are experiencing the app crashing when wifi is enabled do you think you could send me the crash report.

    1) Reproduce the crash
    2) Sync your device using iTunes
    3) Find the Moneydance crash report from the following folder (depending on your platform):

    Mac OS X:/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice<DEVICE_NAME>
    Windows Vista: C:\Users<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice<DEVICE_NAME>

is the user's login name for the computer. <DEVICE_NAME> is the name of the iPod touch or iPhone, for example, "John's iPhone".

If you send (or upload to this thread) the file starting with Moneydance and ending with .crash, I can hopefully figure out what is causing the crash.

I jsut checked in with the developers and they submitted a new version of the Moneydance App to Apple this morning. It should fix the problem of the app crashing on some iphones when the wifi is turned on. It will likely take Apple a couple of days to approve the new version and make it available in the store.

    Shaman,

I'm not entirely sure what's going on here, I'd suggest you contact Apple if you are still only seeing the logo when restarting, as it's unlikely this is connected to the Moneydance iphone app.

    Best of luck,
