Cannot get Desktop App to see iPhone

Hey all,

First off, I am a technical person (deal with computers on a daily basis)....but of course that does not mean I don't make mistakes or forget stuff sometimes. :)

I simply cannot get the Moneydance Network Sync extension to see my iPhone. And yes, I have read the troubleshooting guide :)

Some info:
Windows 7 (64-bit, not sure if that matters)
Moneydance 2010r3
Network Sync extension build 9
iPhone 4 (OS 4.01)
I am running my own wireless network at home with 192.168.3.x, 255.255.255.0 subnet.
I can ping between my desktop and my iPhone.
I have even totally disabled the Windows Firewall.

Still the Network Sync ext does not see my iPhone. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
ken

EDIT: one more thing. Since I told the iPhone app to sync, it is not stuck on the white sync screen (the one that shows the log hex code), and I cannot get out of that screen (e.g., no "back" button).

Do you have a fire wall on your wifi router. Some wifi routers block certain types of traffic even on the local network. If so I recommend that you open ports 5353 and 5354 on your router.

Until the iPhone has been connected to the net sync extension at least once all will show you is initial screen with the access code.

I realize that you have read the trouble shooting guide, please confirm that you mean this guide:

    Hey Ben,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, that is the guide I read. FYI.

My wireless firewall has a rule that allows ANY traffic to ANY ip in the
    192.168.3.1 - 192.168.3.255 range.

My iphone is 191.168.3.125 (on Wifi) and my computer is 192.168.3.80.

I tried an Ad Hoc network served up by my laptop, had my iPhone join that.
    But still no go.

Is there a log anywhere (on the PC or iphone) that we can take a look at?

    Thanks again,
    Ken

Hey Ben, am I out of options? Can we check any logs or something?

    Thanks.

If you select Help->Console Window from within Moneydance that will put the software in a verbose debug mode and output any error messages to the console window. After you open the console window try the adding the device again in the net sync extension. Paste an console out put to this discussion.

Looks like Network Synchronizer does not write to the Console window. This
    is all I got:

    Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (751)

    Settings Folder: C:\Users\wickk\.moneydance

    OS: Windows 7 6.1 x86

    Java: 1.6.0_16 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)

If you are not seeing any errors in the the console then not exceptions are being thrown.

If you cannot get the connection to occur on an adhoc computer to computer wifi network there must be something on your desktop that is either blocking the bonjour discovery packets or routing them to a different network. I have tested the iphone app connecting to a fresh installation of Windows 7 without a personal firewall and the connection was established as it should be.

Please bring up a windows command window and enter the following command without the quotes

    "java -cp %HOMEPATH%.moneydance\fmodules\netsync.mxt com.strangeberry.jmdns.tools.Main"

This will run a utility that will show information on all bonjour services on your local network.

If the iPhone app is running and the device is on the same network and not being blocked you should see "mdncsync.tcp.local" in the list. Do you see that?

I do not see that, with our without firewall turned on. Couple of
    observations:

    1. Looks like I might have multiple versions of java installed. Could that
    be an issue?
    2. java.exe was not in my path variable. I had to navigate to C:\Program
Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin to run it from the command line.

    Any thoughts on those?

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Hi

    Can you install putty http://www.putty.org/

And then run the iphone app and see if you can telnet into port 6362.

My mistake you should try and telnet into port 6366 on the iphone when the app is running. You wont be able to enter any useful command but you should get a connection established if the device is on the same network and there is nothing in the way.

The telnet session opens, but I see no prompt or any text at all. It just
stays open. I "believe" that means it connected at least...otherwise it
would just close with no connection. Correct?

Yes you should get a connection refused message if the port on that ipaddress were not open. Try connecting to a different unused port to see the difference to make absolutely sure you are getting a connection on 6366.

Yep, definitely connecting on my ip, port 6366. When I tried a non-good ip
and same port, I got "could not open connection to host, on port 6366:
    Connect Failed".

    What's next? :-)

    Thanks Ben!

    Ken,

It seems you have done everything correctly and thus far we do not have a solution. We are actively looking at this with our developers. We are also in the process of devising a solution using dropbox as a short term work around fix as well.

Any update on a Dropbox solution?

I'm on a macbook/iphone 4/Intego Netbarrier firewall and struggling with the synch issue ( I too cannot get the MD Desktop to see the iphone). There seems to be a lot of spreadout comments on this issue. I'm not technical like Ken. So if he's struggling then can I suggest a solution that works for "the rest of us"! Thanks

    HI,
I’m also trying, w/o success, to sync MD on my Mac to my iPad. I’ve set my security to allow MD, rebooted my iPad and still nothing. Dropbox and 1Password both work OK over my local WiFi network. I also tried connecting with my iPad cabled directly.
Sorry I don’t understand the following directions as to how to do this:

Failing that check the ipaddress and netmask of both you ipod touch and you pc. To get this info from you iPhone install a free app called "ipconfig". To get this info from your PC run a command prompt and enter "ipconfig /all" without the quotes on a mac the command is "ifconfig". In most networks the netmask will be 255.255.255.0. This need to be the same on you PC and your iphone. In most networks the ipaddress needs to have the first 3 segments be the same with only the last segment being different.<<

I’m looking at Moneydance as a replacement for Quicken but it seems there is poor support here. Too bad.

Kit, I moved across from Quicken and have had a good experience with the Moneydance software, although I use it in a pretty basic way. I've rarely had to use support ( a good thing I guess). Support does seem haphazard esp in a situation with the iphone app where big interest could have been anticipated.

Moneydance people a suggestion: for future feature adds ons, road mapping etc, why not use your user base to canvass opinion on what people see as desirable next version enhancements. A simple on line survey could give a lot of good data for the product management and marketing people (person?)

If you have tried all of the steps in the FAQ on getting the iPhone app to sync with the desktop then it is most likely that your router is not correctly forwarding the discovery message. There are some routers that do not work correctly with the bonjour protocol. Both dropbox and 1password are web services which are not using the bonjour protocol on the local network for service discovery. We are working on a new version of the extension that will not this protocol which we hope will resolve all of these synchronization issues.

I am sorry for the trouble this has caused you and I think the best thing to do would be to try again when we have the new version of the software released.

    Hi Ben,
Thanks for replying. I haven’t tried all the steps as I don’t understand the one I quoted above. If you can clarify that then maybe I can get it to work. I have a Mac using Airport Extreme so it’s not an unusual router under OS 10.6.4.

    Thanks,

I was finally able to get it to sync by doing the following.
Placed the iphone in airplane mode
Turned on the wifi and waited for it to re-connect to home network
    Started the iphone app

I hope the team can find a better way to sync. This one will not get the wife's approval. I'm strongly in favor of the dropbox solution.
