Undating Moneydance Windows 2015 to 2017 On Two Dropbox Synced Computers

This concerns syncing two computers rather than one computer plus a mobile device. I don't see a topic mentioning computer to computer syncing ... so I'm posting here.

I am running Moneydance Windows 2015.7 (1358) on two computers that are currently synced using:
File>Syncing>Dropbox in folder c:\users\<name>\dropbox

I plan to upgrade both computers to Moneydance 2017 and continue syncing using the 2017 Dropbox Folder option. I have read this Knowledge Base article:

http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/moneydance-2017/sharing-data-using-the-moneydance-2017-syncing-engine

... it does not seem to address two computers, currently using sync. Before I dive into this upgrade process, I would appreciate any specific instructions about how to effectively handle upgrade syncing between the two currently synced computers.

Thanks.

No reply after about 24 hours ... and I really wanted to checkout Moneydance Windows 2017, do I jumped right in. Of course, having a good backup using File > Export Backup helps. My procedure was:

    1) Stop Syncing on both computers
    2) Delete .moneydancesync from the Dropbox folder
    3) Install Moneydance Windows 2017 on both computers
    4) Initialize Syncing on both computers with File > Syncing > Dropbox Folder

The update automatically detected my data file and syncing between the two computers is working as expected.

I haven't been through all of the new or updated features but really like having the date added to the Exported Backup file name. Previously, I had to do this manually, in order to have a Backup archive.

The update to 2017 was smooth.

Thanks, Ian. I thought the Moneydance 2017 release might have you a little busy. That's a good thing. :-)

My next step is to add the Android app to the syncing mix.

    I appreciate your follow-up.

Just an update on my switch from Moneydance Windows 2015 to Windows 2017 on two computers.

The two Windows 7 computers are still syncing very effectively using the Moneydabce File > Syncing > Dropbox Folder option on both computers.

I now have an Android device syncing to the Dropbox folder and the two computers. The Android sync is working very well and the entry of transactions is smooth.

I'm a fairly new Moneydance user and this is a good overall result. I'm quite pleased with my switch from a competing product.

Could someone compare the Dropbox Connection and Dropbox Folder techniques of syncing? What are the pros and cons, and how do we choose one or the other? Thanks.

Could anyone comment on how to choose between Dropbox Connection and Dropbox Folder sync methods? Pros and cons?

Good question ... the same one I had when doing the update to Moneydance 2017. Here is what I found in the Knowledge Base.

Dropbox Folder - Sync using the Dropbox folder on this computer. This will allow Moneydance to process synced data even if you're not connected to the Internet at the time.

Dropbox Connection - Sync by connecting to your Dropbox account. Moneydance will communicate with the Dropbox service if you authorise it to access your files.

The basic difference seems to be that that, with Dropbox folder, the data file can be updated to your local folder even if you do not have Internet access at the time. Syncing would resume after your connection is active. With Dropbox connection ... no Internet connection, no ability to update the data file until the connection resumes.

Additional details can be found at this link ...

I will be interested in how it goes for you.

Thank you. I've had success syncing between Mac and iPhone using both methods. With the apparent disadvantage of the Connection method that you point out, I wondered why it was an option at all.

I did some research and it looks like the Folder method is not supported on the Mac version of Moneydance that's bought through the Apple Store. This has to do with technical restrictions on software sold through that channel. The Connection method is available on that version, so I assume it was written for that purpose.

I think I will just stick with the Folder method, given its advantage of offline availability. Thanks for your input.

The folder method certainly looks like the best choice for me. It assures the ability to enter transactions without an active Internet connection ... sometimes desirable when traveling.

As a side note: If I understand correctly, the Folder syncing method with Moneydance 2017 only works with Dropbox. Using a service from other shared folder providers requires the Connected method.
