Hi Everyone! I know that this is a popular thread - as I believe I have read (and tried) all the previous threads. I have a Iphone 3GS and have tried the following:
Originally downloaded the trial version and never got MD to sync w/ phone despite trying all the suggested items in the forums.
Bought full version and still device can not be found.

Make sure that you have saved your data file in the desktop app at least once. - Yep - multiple times

Make sure the iPhone is connected to the local wifi network. - Yep - done now but not originally until after I ran into problems.

Make sure it is the same local network as the PC/mac. - Yep - again didn't find this until after running into problems

Make sure the Moneydance app is running on the iPhone when you click the "Add device" button in the network sync extension on the desktop app. - Yep

Make sure you are running the latest version of the iPhone app. Yep - checked multiple times - deleted and reinstalled multiple times.

Make sure you are running the latest version of the network sync extension of the desktop. You can determine the build of an extension by selecting Extensions->Get info for. - Yep, deleted and added multiple times - along w/ app on Iphone & in Itunes.

If your iPhone has a name that includes spaces change it to a name without spaces. This can be done from the sidebar in itunes. - Not the case - no spaces

If you have a personal firewall set up on your desktop computer you may need to allow incoming connections to the Moneydance application. The instruction for doing this will vary depending on the Operating system and firewall being used. On mac:

System Preferences>Security>Firewall>Advanced
Uncheck "Block all incoming connections"
Add Moneydance Desktop application and "allow incoming connections"

I allowed moneydance and unblocked all connections. I have eventually just disabled the firewall - just in case.

removed and added Configue Network Setting multiple times - have the most recent setting
Pinged my wireless LAN - works on PC
Pinged my Iphone - works and receiving packets

I am so frustrated - after spending hours to try and get this work. I am afraid to delete the MD app on my pc (not a mac) as I have worked hours categorizing items for the entire year. I looked for a very long time before selecting this app - and I just don't know what else to do anymore. The whole purpose of this app is the combatability to the Iphone. I would appreciate any help.

First, I guess I forgot to mention this in my prior post but...Thanks in advance!

If this isn't possible, there are a couple of more questions.
Is there a way to be able to enter the access key as shown in post http://help.infinitekind.com/faqs/iphone-app/how-do-i-install-and-s...?
Maybe that would work. Or is this post just for use with a cloud synching option? Whenever click to add the device I don't see that option (physically entering the key - it just pops up that the device is not found). I would even considering buying another platform (MobileMe doesn't appear to be supported just yet from what I can read). If so, is there one established for pc's? Thanks!
    would it be better

Glad you did all the legwork for me. I have the same (frustrating) problem. The only difference I'm using a Imac D5 running Leopard 10.5.8 and an iphone 4.
Its very hit or miss. Sometimes it syncs sometimes not. I'm opening and closing the app and the MD desktop as if my life depends on it.
I\ve disabled the firewall, and as Ive said sometimes it syncs but more often than not it doesn't.
I look forward to a reply from MD. Why not just have a 'sync now' facility?

There have been 5000+ unique downloads of the iPhone app in the last 3 months and in the vast majority of cases the sync works every time. My personal experience with the adding of the device and syncing was that it worked flawlessly every time. That is until 2 days ago when I was in a local coffee shop rather than at home. Everything was set up just as it was at home. The only difference was that I was on a public wifi hot spot rather than my home wifi. There in the coffee shop I experienced the highly frustrating intermittent sync problem that has been reported on these forums. It took 4 or 5 restarts of the desktop and mobile app to get a sync to occur. When I got home the sync happened flawlessly first time and every subsequent time after that with no change to my system configuration.

This leads me to the conclusion that there is either a particular make of wifi router that is causing this problem or a particular setting on some wifi routers.

The developers are working hard on a cloud based solution that will take the peculiarities of particular local network configurations out of the equation. Such that if both devices have a connection to the internet a sync will be possible. I can't give you an accurate date for when this will be ready. It will be done as soon as we can do it.

There is no point is having a "sync now" if the two devices cannot see each other. If they can see each other a sync will occur automatically.

I am sorry for the trouble this is causing you.

    Sincerely
    Ben Spencer

    Thank You Ben,
Its probably just as frustrating for you guys as well.
It does work every now and then, it is a rig ma-role though. Apart
from that MD is fine and dandy

    Hi Ben and Bob!

Thanks for the reply...it is appreciated. I am glad to see that I am not the only one and therefore not crazy. I realize that I am not a PC guru but I have really given it a good old college try. Are there particular settings that you suggest for the routers? I even tried the "ad hoc" system and still couldn't get that to work. I fully appreciate that it could be me on some level. I just wondered if I could be pointed in a good direction. I know that you can't give a date for deployment on the cloud syncing option but do you feel that it may be within 2010? I appreciate the help.

I will be up front and mention right off the bat that while reasonably knowledgeable about computers in general I have owned my ipod Touch (32 GB iOS4) less than a year; I'm a complete newbie with Moneydance (6 weeks).

That said, getting iPhone / iPod app to sync with the desktop seems to be such a common issue I thought I would mention a couple of things that work for me (both of which I have come across by reading other messages on this site.

    1) I run the MD desktop app. first. and wait for a minute or so before running the app on the iPod. Why this makes a difference I don't know other than that perhaps MD and my wireless network are setting things up.
    2) Then run the iPod app from one of the main screens. Running it from the 'multi tasking' bar in iOS4 does not seem to work reliably.

By following these two steps I've found that the sync is usually done on the first attempt and very rarely do I have to make a second.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Don

    Thanks for the feedback.

I am intrigued by your first point, leaving MD on the desktop for a min after starting before starting the iphone app. What other Moneydance extensions do you have installed? I imagine it could be that the initialization of other MD extensions could take a little while delaying the availability of the network sync extension.

Those of you experiencing the problem of unreliable syncing could you list the make and model of the wifi router you are using.

    Hi Ben

No other extensions installed just network sync.
I have a LinkSys WRT54G router which has been reliable. I usually find when a rare problem arises it comes from my firewall (Avast Internet Security 5.0) or Windows settings.

I'm having trouble with reliable syncing, too.

    Mac OS 10.6.4
    Apple TimeCapsule as wireless router
iPod Touch running iOS 4.1 (had problems under 4.0, too)
    iPad running iOS 3.something

I think i have the find and replace extension in addition to the Network one, but I believe that is all.

I have several apps that sync with applications on my MacBook. One of them (SplashShopper) syncs manually and offers a two-stage sync process. When you hit the sync button, it will search for a computer running the desktop version of SplashShopper. If it finds one, it will list it. The user touches that listing, and the sync begins.

If the search comes up dry, there is an option to specify the IP of the computer the user wants to sync with. (Actually, you can choose this option before the search completes). The SplashShopper iOS app often cannot find my computer, but it almost always works to use the "sync to IP" option.

I don't know if MD could create a similar system, since it appears that sometimes the iOS can't find a computer one way, but does the other?

I have created a suggestion ticket to allow users to specify the IP address of the desktop for the iphone app sync. The tickets is attached to this discussion. posting in this discussion counts as a vote for the ticket.
