Error when attempting to import QIF into Moneydance

For the past 3 weeks, I've been running into a problem loading QIF files into MoneyDance. I'm getting the following error message when attempting to import the QIF into MoneyDance or when I click on the file from my downloads folder:
Error reading file: Unexpected end of message while reading headers

I have a Wells Fargo account, and I spoke to their Quicken support staff about this error. They were unable to decipher it and said that they only support Quicken software and could not help me.

About three weeks ago, I reached out to MoneyDance tech support and they instructed me to wait for Wells Fargo to fix it. For the past two weeks, I have attempted to load the QIF into MoneyDance and continue getting the same error message.

I'm using MoneyDance Version 2017.8.
The software is on a MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G65)

Please let me know what I need to do to get this to work again.

    Hi Aaron,

Thank you for providing your version of Moneydance.

Per the Moneydance preview change log, builds 1696 and 1698 each have updates regarding WF.

The current preview version is MD 2017.10 (1701). You can d/l it here to see if it resolves your issue:

I am having the exact same problem with my Wells Fargo accounts. When I attempt to import the QIF file that was downloaded from Wells Fargo, I get the same error message: "Error reading file: Unexpected end of message while reading headers"

I have not contacted Wells Fargo as I know their response will be that they only support Quicken as I would get the same response as noted above. Not sure where to turn next.

    Hi Aaron, Richard,

From what I've read on these forums. WF offers the QFX file format for manual downloads. QFX is superior to QIF.

It is my understanding that the aforementioned fixes were in relation to QFX files imported from WF.

Try using the QFX file from WF with the current preview build.

Kevin, thanks for the suggestion, but that is not it. WF only gives you 2 format options for downloads, Quicken (qfx) and Comma Delimited. I double checked the Quicken file and it is a .QFX extension (not QIF). Wish it were that simple.

    Hi Richard,

There are means of importing CSV files into Bank and Credit Card accounts in Moneydance.

The Text Importer can do some types of CSV files but there is a free, third-party CSV importer designed specifically for Moneydance that works on most any CSV file that I've ever come across.

If you're interested, here's a link to the developer's website. What you'll want is the file. Depending on your browser, you may or may not need to unzip the file. There's a 'How to use it' link at the bottom of the page.

If you need help setting it up, post a small sample of your WF CSV file and I'll try to lend a hand.
I'll need to see at least 1 deposit transaction and 1 payment transaction to see how they are formatted. Include header and footer rows (if any).

I also need to know if it's for a Bank account or Credit Card account.

Keep in mind that these are public forums. Redact any sensitive information before posting your CSV file.

    Hi Aaron, Richard,

As an alternative to upgrading to the preview build or using the CSV Importer, a Moneydance user, hleofxquotes has written a python script to run on the WF QFX files before importing them so that Moneydance will accept them.

Take a look at this post.

Ok, I went ahead and downloaded the Preview build 1701which seemed to fix the import problem from WF. Not sure if there will be other problems as this is the latest beta version, but seems better than not working at all.

I tried using CSV files before and way to complicated for me! Also the python script from hleofxquotes sounded intriguing but way over my head to go through all of that!!

    Thanks for your help!
