Since yesterday I can't download transactions from Capital One 360 anymore.

I also can't automatically download my CapOne360 account from Moneydance, but I can manually download the file from CapOne360 and then import it into Moneydance.

Maxim Porges...I have Ally accounts and am very happy with them. Usually only have one transaction a month - interest - so that is easy to key in. Capital One money market pays 2% also.
I now have Discover CD, savings and checking accounts and yes, they do support direct connect. The only problem that I am having is that it doesn't seem to distinguish between accounts so it'll download the transactions for all the accounts into one of the accounts. I'm not sure why it's doing that and will call them tomorrow to see if there is a fix. Otherwise, I will disable online banking for the CD and savings accounts and only download to the checking which has many more transactions. If anyone knows what's going on with that, please let me know.

When deciding what bank to use I would not have Direct connect anywhere near the top of the list, sure for some it would be a nice to have and it could act as a tie breaker. I think things like the following are more important.
- Does the bank have the products I want
- What are the fees and charges like (these can easily chew through any better interest rates)
- What are the rates of Interest - both Credit and Debit
- Are ATMs and branches easy to access (it can cost you to use other bank's ATMs here)
- Does their Internet Banking website provide what I need

When I had Chase (pre-2014), they had OFX but charged a pretty hefty fee for Bill Pay.
Discover Bank has OFX download and is currently paying 2% for savings. I just signed up for a Discover Bank savings account and should get a new customer bonus. I chose them over the few other 2+% savings payers as I have had a Discover Card (not Discover Bank, but related) for quite some time with minimal problems.

When I look at the OFXhome.com Validate screen history for Discover Bank it shows what appears to be a consistent "Failure" since March 2018. MD say it should work but OFXhome.com seems to say it doesn't of late.
Can someone confirm or deny that Discover Bank accounts can actually be downloaded into MD?
I know Discover CARD works because I download my transactions.
Thanks,

It worked for me yesterday, when I signed up, and today.

Thanks,
Sean,
How are we to interpret the validate function of ofxhome.com?
Are the OFX credentials in MD the same as those in ofxhome.com?
Thanks,

Hi Ralph,
ofxhome.com is completely independent from Moneydance, so I'm not sure how they validate their services. However, I know that Discover's OFX server is very finicky about the http headers that it accepts (and in which order) to the extent that we have special cased their service in our OFX+HTTP implementation. Maybe that's why ofxhome.com's service thinks it is failing while Moneydance doesn't have a problem connecting to it.
Thanks,
Sean

If anyone is chasing the highest interest rate for her/his liquid reserves and doesn't mind hand keying a limited amount of transactions:
Some Energy Companies are offering investment notes with currently up to 2.45% APR; two examples:
These work essentially like a savings/money market account, however they are not FDIC insured.
This is now very off-topic from the OFX download discussion, but several people seem to be looking for maximum returns on their short term funds.

Maxim, I have used Ally and the bank works fine. But they have never supported OFX and likely never will so this is also a problem bank. If you don't need OFX there are many banks to choose from that will give you good rates. I get higher rates from savings at Marcus than at Ally if you just want higher yield savings with no minimum. Also, Capital One money market requires $10K for the higher rates while others have no minimum.
Other banks that may be interesting:
TIAA/Everbank
American Express
Marcus
Synchrony

Jens, interesting idea with the energy companies. I didn't know they offered these but they don't appear to be a really good deal as offered. They are neither FDIC nor SIPC insured and the accounts are only backed by the company assets. So these would me more like a floating rate bond than a low-risk savings. The Duke Energy rates are high only if you have over $50K in the savings and this would mean $50K in one company and assuming all the risk of a single company. You could do better with less than $50K and no risk from Vanguard Prime money market fund and still keep the SIPC insurance. Also, for comparison you could pick up a short-term bond fund with much lower risk and higher yield.

I have a Discover Card account and a Discover Bank account. Only my Discover card account downloads transactions to Money Dance. My Discover Bank account gives me this error.
"There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The details of this error are below.
Bank Name: Discover Bank
The error code reported by the server was: 2000
I'm sorry, the system is unavailable right now, please try again later."

Count me in as having the same connection problem with Capital One. A manager told me last week that they ARE still supporting other finance programs. (other than Quicken) But since she could not provide any details on when it would work again I tend to doubt what she said.

Hi avp2.
I am also using MD 2017.10 (1706) on my Mac and I get errors downloading from Discover Bank. I have tried disabling and setting up online connections and I still get the error. My Discover card on the other hand downloads transactions with out any problem.
Any suggestions you have are appreciated.

Open the Console Window under Help menu. Wait for the window to stop showing any new entries - takes a few minutes for me. Clear the log window - tab on bottom. Do not close the Console window. Go back to main program and start a Discover Bank account download.
Check the resulting com messages in the Console. See if the following parameters are the same as for my working setup (which I got from doing a new connection in online setup and choosing Discover Bank):
<FI ORG> Discover Bank, <FID> 12610, <APP> QWIN, <APPVER> 2500,
server URL: https://ofx.discovercard.com
If they are not, you may be able to fix them by disabling your discover bank account online connection and resetting it by choosing new connection, advanced and then filling in the ORG ID and URL. Check again via Console Window.
If that does not work, try disabling your discover bank account online connection, closing MD, opening MD and setting up the online connection again being sure to select new connection. The close/open forces MD to update things it sometimes does not right away.
Long shot: I was asked by the Discover website this morning (upon logon) if I wanted to set a single logon set of credentials for my Discover Bank and Discover Card accounts. I skipped that for now thinking it might cause some problem with OFX. If you have a single logon for both, maybe I guessed right.

Hey Al, thanks for the tips on my Discover Bank OFX issue. I do see the same parameters that you see when I look at the console window and I have previously tried the disabling connection suggestions that you offered. I do have a single logon for both Discover card and Discover Bank so I am guessing that is what is causing the problem with OFX. I will have to see if they will let me separate my logins.
Thanks for the help.

Did anyone notice that it seems that Capital One OFX broke last year around this time!!!

Let us know if you find out for sure about the single logon. You might also copy your complete com sequence (without your credentials) and post to see if Sean can figure what is going on.

Well, Discover will not let me change to separate logins once I have created a single logon. :-( Since I had never used my Discover Bank account I may just close it and see if I can open a new one. I will start a new help discussion if that works or I have issues still.
My apologies to others on this discussion for this diversion but I had been using Capital One 360 and when they broke the OFX download I started looking for other options.

I just received this message from Capital One. FYI
"We reviewed your concerns regarding your 360 Accounts and the OFX file transfer protocol. Our technical team advises that we discontinued support for this format in 2014. The reasons behind this were related to the security of our Customer’s information. We are currently working on a replacement for the OFX format, currently there is no ETA for release.
Please know that we value you as a Customer and this experience doesn’t go unheard. We have documented this thoroughly, so we can improve moving forward. We encourage you to leave feedback whenever you see an opportunity for change. Another way to do this is to sign into Capitalone.com with your Username and Password, click on the megaphone in the lower left corner and this will submit your feedback on the spot.
Thanks,
Doug

Well, at least you got a response....
114 Posted by chobe2 on 14 Dec, 2018 12:50 PM
Well…That’s strange because I was downloading transactions to MD right up until November 2018. I don’t think they know what they are talking about.
115 Posted by webyan on 14 Dec, 2018 04:05 PM
That is exactly what I told them, that it was working until November 2018. And I gave them Sean's assessment on the security of using other download options like the Open Banking initiative which is using aggregation servers to store my banking data and credentials and asked how that could be more secure than the direct connect of the OFX protocol. I told them their technical team did not seem to have a clue and then I thanked them for forcing me to look for new banking options and discovering there were some that paid better interest and worked with OFX so I am moving my accounts elsewhere.

2014 is about when Capital One stopped OFX Bill Pay.

Yeah, Capital One 360 OFX stopped for me in Nov 2018 time frame as well. Was hoping it was some temporary issue but I guess not. Has me looking for alternatives as well. Clicking through all the menus to download is a pain.
I've never had issues with Capital One 360, or ING before them. Disappointed that now that I have a complaint I can't even find any way to contact them except via phone.

Sean,
The security concerns associated with financial software running on a customer machine are certainly different from those associated with financial services running in the cloud, or on a company's servers, but there's no reason that consumer financial software can't connect securely to a bank. The security challenges of software on a customer machine don't disappear just because you insert an aggregator in between the customer and the bank.
It seems to me that The Infinite Kind has, perhaps uniquely so, a strong interest in getting the Open Banking Initiative to support a client "profile" that enables financial software running on customer machines. Without it, your customers have a less-good experience downloading transactions, and there's no security reason why client access should be limited to financial services.
I hope you will consider lobbying for this not just personally, but at a corporate level.
