MD+ downloads stopped working today?
Is this just me, or others? Another Plaid problem?
MD+ downloads don't work this morning. They worked fine yesterday. They seem to hang mid-download, and then it locks up the MD app later.
Click on an account
Choose Download Transactions
See message "Downloading (account name).... at the bottom
Nothing else happens. No "Downloaded X of X transactions" at the bottom status like usual. After 10 seconds the status area goes blank.
Then downloading any other account doesn't do anything. But basic use of MD is still working like normal, the app isn't fully locked up.
Then when quitting MD, I get "Finished saving data" dialog, then nothing. Doesn't fully quit, have to force quit. As if some process is still running that won't allow quitting.
This happens in two totally different MD data files.
Using v 2024.1(5118) on MacOS 14.6.1 (but the problem happened in 14.6.0 before I applied the upgrade). Yes, I've rebooted.

I have nothing useful to add but I am one experiencing issues as well that just started today, long waits for downloads then errors similar to above. Just got on the forum for this reason alone to see if something is up.
Discover, Citi/Costco problematic.

At this point it seems pretty obvious that it's a Plaid issue. Hope to hear from IK in this regard.
33 Posted by dtd on 21 Aug, 2024 01:09 AM
TonyRI - I agree, thanks @david.beav for the detailed info. It's a Plaid problem, whether internally to plaid or how they interconnect with MD.
I also did have problems with Citi/Costco visa, but that was last week and it was just a 500 failure versus freezing the Moneydance process. (It and everything else did work today)
Sounds like a problem with Plaid and getting worse. At this point, it has to go to MD/IK and Plaid, as users have no visibility to Plaid.

And of course, AFTER this discussion, I have more info. I mentioned my own problems with Citi/Costco visa in the last message, but after that above message, I did a standard download just to "prove all accounts still work"....
boom - Costco visa failed, and instead of a 500 error, had all the same Java errors mentioned. However, it did not freeze Moneydance. Ok, what's going on.
I still use OFX with Citi/Costco, not MD+ [I always use OFX if it still works, MD+ for what no longer works in OFX - Chase, Schwab, USAA...]
So it does get curiouser. OFX does not use Plaid, but still, the same error was generated for my OFX Costco. But it did not freeze Moneydance.
And I ran Costco again, and it worked the second and third time. But the fourth time, Java errors. Still, my other OFX/Plaid accounts still work (for now............)

I have now reported this directly to Sean (the primary developer) and to members of MD/IK customer support... they should see it in their morning in the UK

This thread reports a problem with MD+ downloads, which appears to be getting worse over time. Not affecting everyone yet, but definitely a concern.

Thank you dtd for all your diligent assistance!

All: I have no idea what I did, whether what I did in fact cured the problem, or whether the cure will last, but this morning all my transactions downloaded from 7 accounts in two different banks without a problem. Back to normal?
38 Posted by david.beav on 21 Aug, 2024 02:25 PM
Me too! Yay! Download All ran right down the list.
Someone, somewhere, rebooted something. Thank you to them.

A big thank you to dtd who reported this problem to the primary developer.
They appear to have fixed it overnight West Coast time.
PHEW! It's only when you lose a process that you realise how much you depend on it!

Any chance that we'll hear what the problem or the fix ended up being? It's always fun to close the loop.
41 Posted by dtd on 21 Aug, 2024 09:17 PM
I haven’t personally heard anything.

So, what do I do if I still see the issue where it is not downloading transactions for my bank account? The last one was on 8/18, and nothing else since. The console looks clean - it is connecting, but I am just finding nothing to download. I tried the Preview and the latest Release versions - the same results.
43 Posted by david.beav on 23 Aug, 2024 02:19 AM
I would start a new issue for it, sounds totally different than this one and yours would get lost in the noise.
44 Posted by dtd on 23 Aug, 2024 03:11 AM
moved to a newer thread on the 8/18 topic.

I have not seen this before and transactions download the same day or a day after. Maybe it is a bank problem. Just a strange behavior.
46 Posted by Dan P on 23 Aug, 2024 01:56 PM
DTD where is the newer thread?
47 Posted by Gene Ushinsky on 23 Aug, 2024 02:01 PM
Can you see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/online-banking/1249469-md-stopped-downloading-transactions-on-818 ?

As per dtd’s comments, I have seen this before also. Almost as a given, if I download transactions in the morning, any new transactions will not load later in the day. Sometimes, transactions appear on my banks website as “posted", but are not yet downloading into Moneydance via Plaid. Usually the bank’s posted transactions will subsequently download in a day or two, though occasionally it’s been longer. I think that’s just the way things go between my bank(s) and Plaid, as dtd has more thoroughly described.
My experience since “the fix” is that transactions are once again downloading as expected. For example, this morning 28 transactions downloaded through Plaid/Moneydance into 4 of my accounts. (That wasn’t “backlogged” activity, we just went on a spree!)

Big picture.... I'd love to read something about exactly how the MD+/Plaid system works. Some posts have suggested that Plaid pulls data from banks into its cache and that's what MD+ is reading, but I'd be surprised by that... I suspect Plaid is a tunnel to the banks' systems on demand. And it seems the banks have to put each transaction into a "visible to Plaid" mode, and anything in Pending status isn't visible. And it seems there's a some-number-of-days-into-the-past limit, is that Plaid or the institutions ???
As for me, my MD+ connections have always been near-real-time, including updating during the day as credit card charges come through. (Banks update overnight of course).
51 Posted by Gene on 23 Aug, 2024 02:58 PM
Looks like the other one is a private thread with a member of the support team.
52 Posted by dtd on 23 Aug, 2024 08:38 PM
Nope - it was public, and I moved a long reply to that thread. Then it was privated, removing my response from public view. And removing MY access to it as well.
Maybe I shouldn't suggest a new thread when there is thread drift.
Now I have to type it all over again, if I can even remember what I said.
53 Posted by dtd on 23 Aug, 2024 08:40 PM
@Gene - assuming you still have access to that thread, can you copy/paste my response to you, and post it here???
54 Posted by dtd on 23 Aug, 2024 08:42 PM
.
55 Posted by dtd on 23 Aug, 2024 08:43 PM
Even though it has nothing to do with the original subject of this thread, which is why you were encouraged to make it a different thread.
56 Posted by Dan P on 23 Aug, 2024 08:47 PM
I only asked so I could post in the new thread. I'll just start my
own thread. I'm still having an issue with Vanguard and MD+

Basically that thread was about not having updates since 8/18, and I said it could take 3-7 days sometimes to update, (especially around holidays) and my record delay was 10 days.
As to comments that it has been almost immediately for most everyone posting (when it works), well that just shows Plaid has gotten better overall, but delays do still happen, and really you just wait till the wait is unreasonable, like 5-8 days, and maybe you do have a different problem. [Of course, that implies it seems ok, with 0 out of 3 downloaded constantly, versus 503 errors, or Java errors, etc.]
58 Posted by dtd on 23 Aug, 2024 09:04 PM
Plaid is a tunnel to the banks' systems on demand. Incorrect. It's not like OFX.
it seems the banks have to put each transaction into a "visible to Plaid" mode - not transaction based permission, overall 3rd party access permissions. Pending is never included (not even in OFX).
Days in the past limit? In OFX, it was whatever the bank decided, 3 months (many banks) to 18 months (Schwab in the OFX days). After Plaid, some limits decreased, but I have no idea if that was due to the bank or to Plaid.
59 Posted by Gene on 23 Aug, 2024 09:57 PM
I will ask my bank to see if they have done anything.

Don't Infinite Kind have a responsibility to explain in more detail how the Plaid/MD connection works? Why is it shrouded in such mystery? There appears to be little logic to the delays we experience between updates. Why can't they share their knowledge?
