Demo - Import OSX transactions - Many duplicate transactions

Hi. Downloaded demo today. Residing in Canada then I have no choice but to export data from credit card & upload to MoneyDance. Understand OFX recommended so did that. I had some difficulty initially with export dates so multiple export files contained some duplicate data. If I enter MoneyDance and delete all transactions (back to zero) then reimport any one file then all history unconfirmed transactions magically re-appear, including scope well beyond last imported file. Nuts. Gives me no confidence in import function. Are deleted transactions not actually deleted? Are duplicate transactions not detected?

    just a user here.

Actually, you should have more confidence. The way import works (in any program - Quicken, MD, others) is that there is a unique ID saying something like "hey, you've imported me, so now you don't have to do it again".

When you delete that item - well - hey - neither the bank nor the program knows it has ever been imported, so - yeah - it gets imported again. Of course they reappear.

What do you WANT to happen? You need to describe more about what you mean by "duplicate data" and "beyond last imported file".

    Hope this helps some.

OK, so let be more specific. From a fresh installation of MoneyDance, I imported a series of data files from a single bank account.
    - first, I exported/imported transactions in OFX file for 1 Jan 2020 to 12 Sept 2020. this seemed more transactions than necessary to test Moneydance. and I understand that auto-categorization applies only to similar transactions in subsequent imports (so better import in multiple small uploads). regardless, I deleted all transactions.
    - second, I exported/imported transactions in OFX file for default period (mid August to mid September 2020). Immediately following upload then all transactions from 1 Jan 2020 appeared, with transactions between mid-Aug to mid-Sept appearing twice. Presuming I had done something dumb, and reflecting on better approach of calendar month uploads, then I deleted all transactions.
    - Third, I exported/imported transactions in OFX file for calendar month of August. Following upload then all transactions from 1 Jan appeared. Transactions 1 Aug to mid Aug appeared three times. Those in Sept twice.

"What do I want to happen":
    - transactions deleted should remain deleted, rather than somehow be reactivated in an unrelated future action. reappearance of previously deleted data seems a data integrity dealbreaker.
    - ideally, import process would detect duplicate transactions - or at least flag likely duplicate transactions for user review

    Hope this helps some.

ok - i have no idea.

it seems like maybe you didn't delete the transactions, but that doesn't make sense if they went away before you did another import. So, I have no clue.

As for detecting duplicate transactions - that would be problematic. You said "I want to import these items" - if they are duplicates, or triplicates - you said you wanted them. Fixing this is what the merge transactions items is for.

I'm passing on this - I'm just a fellow user.

    I'm a fellow user.

The main occasions that I have seen transactions reappearing is when the data set has been housed in a service like Dropbox, occasionally strange things have happened if there is a corrupted transactions file.

If you post your Moneydance error log it can be examined to see if there is anything in there that may point to an issue.

If you're using Mac OS, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

    or:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:

    ~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

If you're using Windows, it should be located under your login directory at:

    C:\Users\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt

    or

    C:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\.moneydance\errlog.txt

Depending on your version of Windows

If you're using Linux it should be located in your home folder at:
    ~/.moneydance/errlog.txt

I would say that deleting transactions then trying a new technique is not optimum, this just adds data to the data set it does not remove it as such, the preferred technique is to instead create a new data set using the File --> New Menu command.

Appreciate efforts. Attached errlog but its content doesn't seem that interesting to my uneducated eyes.
Understand final comment about New File. Sensible advice and certainly doable. Greater care on uploads would avoid repetition of challenges. I just uploaded one month OFX file for a different bank account - it was fine and previously deleted data on original account did not re-appear. Given context of software trial then reappearance of previously deleted data does raise data integrity concerns.

The error log is incomplete but it looks like there was something in the OFX transactions that the software did not like. There is not enough information to say much else.
