What file types are you downloading in importing for the different sites? QFX, OFX, QIF, etc. If you are downloading a QFX or OFX file, those formats contain enough information that Moneydance can tell that it has seen a transaction before, and won't reimport that transaction. Any other format doesn't contain the unique transaction IDs necessary for this, so the transactions will be reimported, and can only be resolved by deleting the duplicates or merging them with the existing transactions in the confirmation process.

This card pays back 2%. 1 when you purchase and then 1 when you pay. I wonder if there is some type of tag the have on them so they can keep track of what items still need to have the 2nd cash back released when I pay.

With OFX data there is a transaction ID. This is supposed to be unique. Moneydance stores this as part of the transaction so that if it sees it again it knows to discard a newly downloaded transaction as it is a duplicate.

There is a couple of way this can go wrong.

If a transaction is manually entered and the downloaded transaction is not merged into it it never gets the Transaction ID.

Another other thing we sometimes see is the institution changes the transaction ID thus giving Moneydance no hope of identifying duplicates.

If a bank does not include an ID that just breaks the whole system.

What Stuart is proposing is to capture the downloaded transactions so that the data can be examined to see what it contains.

dwg
