Balance in checkbook doesn't match bank

I download checking activity by exporting from Schwab, translating to CVS with Numbers, and then importing to Moneydance... since direct import stopped working, and your workaround doesn't handle 2 part authentication. Balances Schwab and Moneydance matched perfectly until this time, when I got $102k in MD, and $100k in Schwab (taxes and some other stuff pending). Boundary of my download was 2/22, but in only got 1 of two that date. Hand entered $3k that was missed, and MD balance went to $93k. The order of entries in MD and Schwab don't match.. always has been the case. I looked at balances both sides all the way back to 9/21, and they are systematically higher Schwab side by $3-7k. But expenditure and deposits are present both sides. My current MD files goes back to 1/18, but I was a user for at least 10 years prior, pretty sure. I'm thinking the file got corrupted somehow. Maybe I just start a new one, and hope reports work on the old?

Rephrasing.. The download technique from Schwab bank to checking in MD described above worked several times, with balances matching. But after the last one, off by $5k, and by $3-5k all the way back to 9/21. Corrupted file? Have not tried installing the backup from before the mismatch yet. Or should I start a new file? The current one goes back to 1/2018.

You said I'd get an email notifying me of a response, but have not seen it yet. [email blocked]

    Hi Richard,

We've recently released Moneydance 2022.3 (4068) including a feature that will allow you to connect to investment accounts using Moneydance + now (among other improvements). So, we would recommend downloading and installing this version first.

This version is now available to download from this page.

Please note Moneydance + is a premium service that requires:

    1) You own a license of Moneydance 2022 (as you do)

    2) a subscription ($2 monthly) - for further information please refer to this section of the Knowledge base.

You can find the steps for connecting your Schwab accounts with Moneydance + here.

You might be required to disable your current connection on the Online Banking Setup screen first, in order to stop the OFX method (if you were using this previously) to take over Moneydance + and allow your transactions to download as expected . To remove the connection, open Moneydance, select your account, then choose Online > Set Up Online Banking and select the "Disable" button to remove the connection.

Then, in the Set Up Moneydance+ window, you'll need to click on the "None" label in order to select which account in Moneydance corresponds to the account names and numbers on the left side of the window. After doing that and selecting the Moneydance account from the menu, using the ⌘D keyboard shortcut or clicking the Download button when the account is selected will cause Moneydance to download the transactions for that account.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

CAn you tell me if your current setup will download my checking account information from Schwab to MD? Linking to Schwab requires two factor identification. Your previous subscription service could not accommodate that.

I think my Moneydance file got corrupted. Checking account balances matched Schwab until the last download; now they are off by $5-7k all the way back to 9/21. My current Moneydance file goes back to 1/2018, and is 59mb.

I want to make a new Moneydance file, to start on 3/1/22. I duplicated the old one, thinking maybe I could just delete everything before 3/2/22. But the data file is in the Library someplace, and my “new” Moneydance might delete stuff laid down by the “old” Moneydance? So maybe I find that data in the Library, rename it and put it someplace else? Then my new Moneydance will make a new data repository, and I can delete all the stuff prior to 3/1/22 in the new repository?

That way I don’t have to re-enter all the accounts and categories, I would hope.

But maybe there is an easier way to do it?

My other pending question is whether the current Moneydance (Mac) with the recommended $2 subscription will download from Schwab to my MD checking account. The previous subscription apparently could not deal with 2 factor authentication. I got around that by downloading to my desktop and then importing that file to MD. Worked fine several times.

The easy / safe way to duplicate is to File/Export backup... Then File/Import backup. NOTE THE NEW NAME. This will create a new dataset (different name).. You can safely delete txns in this one.. NOTE: Sync will get turned off. Also note: existing MD+ setups will still work in the new dataset....

It seems that connecting via Plaid to some banks will always force you to use MFA (code texted to your mobile device). After you do that successfully once, you must not use the same MFA method to log into your bank's website afterwards, using your PC or mobile web browser. If you do this again, the problem will reoccur.
The workaround is to tell your bank's login process that you don't have access to your SMS texts, and let it challenge you in another way (either security question or your physical card details). However, this should not be an issue with Schwab now.

Finally, using Moneydance + you should be able to download from Schwab not only to your MD checking account but any other account as well.

Finally, we would recommend running this update:
Moneydance 2022.3 (4071) is now available to download from this page.

For a full list of improvements in the preview version, please refer to this page.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!
