Error when trying to download transactions
Getting the following error when trying to download from Chase. Typically when this happens it self-resolves by the next day, but this has been going on for three days now: A communication or parsing error occurred. This could be the result of a network problem, a proxy error, or misconfigured server.
Error Description: java.net.UnknownHostException: ofx.chase.com

Just had the exact same error, first time today.

I should add that I tried disabling online banking for one of the accounts and then re-enabling it, and that did not resolve the issue.

Chase has discontinued the OFX auto-downloads. See https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/online-banking/23868-chase-and-discover-abandoning-ofx-hopefully-still-a-question-versus-a-statement.

Geez - I just read the linked article and I'm not getting the prompt described. Is this something Moneydance needs to fix, or are our only options to either manually download from Chase or pay for this service in Moneydance?

just a user - Chase has discontinued OFX downloads (as of October 6) without notifying their users - a big problem for those who (used to) use Online Bill Pay.
Moneydance cannot "fix" a bank discontinuing a long term service.
So - alternatives are - manually download QFX (preferred) or CSV files from Chase for each account, move to manual entry, or subscribe to Moneydance+ (the fee of which goes to the aggregator Plaid, not to Moneydance).
Hope that helps.

Having same issue. Back in June 2020 I had the problem and it resolved. But now there's threads of Chase stopping OFX downloads? Not sure what it all means but will try and get to support and ask.

OK, I've just set up Moneydance+ and so far it's buggy as hell. I now get this error when logging into Moneydance. Sometimes downloading manually works and sometimes it doesn't.
I'm sorry, an error occurred. The details of this error are below.
Error Description: java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "com.moneydance.apps.md.view.gui.MDPlusController.setItemLinkStatus(String, com.moneydance.apps.md.view.gui.MDPlusController$ItemLinkStatus)" because the return value of "com.moneydance.apps.md.view.gui.MoneydanceGUI.getPlusController()" is null

In addition, EVERY TIME I download transactions for my checking account, I get a prompt saying "This is the first time....yadda yadda yadda."

I think I've got it working - one trick is that you have to disable online banking for all the accounts you want to switch over to Moneydance+. Seems counterintuitive but "online banking" means OFX. I'll keep an eye on it and post with any updates.

This comment was split into a new private discussion: Error when trying to download transactions
I have four Chase accounts set up with MD+. I've noticed this morning that when launching Moneydance, the first account generates an error but the rest succeed. Then I go to Online\Download All Accounts and the one that failed succeeds. Guessing it's not connecting quickly enough on that first try.

Update: Only one of the four accounts is getting updated, The other three are reporting no new transactions, which I know isn't correct. I have a separate, private support discussion going on to try to figure that out.

@ jjkatz
Please launch the Toolbox and navigate to Toolbox Options (on top left corner) and select - Toolbox Options->Advanced mode.
In the Menu: Online banking tools choose : Force Disconnect an MD+ Connection. Finally restart Moneydance and recreate the connection as outlined here.
Select the Online->Setup Moneydance+ menu, then click on an account (not the bank name) in the right column you should see a popup menu. If you select the Reset Sync Date entry, Moneydance will prompt you upon the next download to select how far back in time you'd like it to request transactions. How far back the transactions actually go is dependent upon the bank and/or their service provider, but Moneydance will request whatever date you specify.
Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

I think it worked but I’d like to wait and see what happens tomorrow morning, whether today’s activity gets downloaded. Also, because there are two logins for Chase, I only set one of them up just now. If those downloads are successful tomorrow morning, I’ll add the other login and see what happens.
Thanks,
Josh

Thank you for reporting back, Josh!
Please note that usually after Plaid acquires your transactions from the bank, it may take some time before they are ready. Plaid will download the transactions in the background and then when they are ready, Moneydance can download them. For this reason, at times there could be some delays but this doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem with the connection.

Got the error on startup again, and none of my transactions from yesterday were downloaded.

You could try to force clear the current connection information for your bank in Moneydance to stop the OFX method to take over Moneydance + and allow your transactions to download as expected.
To remove an OFX connection, open Moneydance, select the account you want and choose Online > Set Up Online Banking select the "Disable" button to remove the connection and restart Moneydance.
If the problem persist, you should navigate to Extensions->Manage Extensions and install the Toolbox.
Launch Toolbox and navigate to Toolbox Options (on top left corner) and select -
Update Mode->Yes->Do Back Up Now (recommended).
Then, navigate to Menu: Online Banking (OFX) Tools
In the resulting window, under Update Functions you should select :
Delete OFX Banking Service / Logon profile (remove_one_service.py)
Finally, restart Moneydance and recreate the connection as outlined here.
Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

I’ve deleted the OFX connections, restarted Moneydance, still got the error and still did not get any new transactions. Do you also want me to delete and recreate the MD+ connections again?
Josh

Later yesterday afternoon I restarted Moneydance and my transactions downloaded successfully. This morning they did not. I’ll try again later today. I’m still getting the error on startup.
Thanks,
Josh

My transactions from yesterday just showed up. It looks like there’s a bit of a delay with MD+. With OFX I’d see them first thing in the morning. I’ll keep an eye on it over the next few days.

just a user - as to transaction downloads:
OFX is fairly immediate, Plaid/MD+ can often be delayed a day or two, and occasionally longer. This is true in general, not just with Chase.
21 Posted by jjkatz on Oct 15, 2022 @ 08:24 PM
Good to know, thanks. I’ll keep this in mind as I evaluate whether MD+ is worth the subscription/bother, vs. just logging into Chase each morning and downloading manually.
22 Posted by dtd on Oct 15, 2022 @ 08:28 PM
And that's exactly the way I look at it. As long as Chase continues to offer QFX (whereas Discover discontinued OFX, and even OFX downloads), then that is a valid alternative.
I personally have 7 chase accounts, and considered downloading QFX twice a week, but then realized if I was willing to go to twice a week, I could just wait for MD+
Personal decision.
