MD 2022.5
I was on vacation recently, used amazon, and so marked a downloaded Amazon charge in "Travel" category
It is normally "Household"
No MD defaults every amazon charge to "Travel"
I see the Amazon with Household below when processing downloaded transactions, but MD always defaults to Travel now
Can't find a way to change the default for Amazon back to Household
How do I do that?

By "processing" I mean going through all the unconfirmed blue-dot items and correcting the category then confirming them

    Hi Padraic,

I'm not from Support, but you can change the default category for an Account by going to "Account > Edit Account > Default Category"

That said, the reason why it changed is described in the KB article:

    https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/online-banking-and-bill-pay/c...

"Moneydance attempts to recognise and auto-categorise transactions with similar payees and amounts, so once you have manually assigned a category to a transaction or changed it's description - you can expect Moneydance to suggest the same category or description for similar transactions in the future."

    Regards,

Thanks. Yeah, knew most of that. But I am expecting MD to use the most recent manual change. It is stuck on mapping Amazon to "Travel" even though I have recently manually changed it to "Household" many times. Keeps going back to Travel.

I do not think the most recent manual change would necessarily have the weighting to change what is being suggested for the category.

Moneydance uses a weighted fuzzy matching algorithm to automatically assign categories to newly downloaded transactions based on the transactions that are already in your register. This matching algorithm takes into consideration the description, memo, date, amount etc... giving each of these a different weight. The field with the most weight is the description field, but I believe that it may use the bank assigned description in preference to a user assigned description.

This is about as much as has been disclosed about how it is selected, what we don't know is how it then uses the other weighting and what weightings in order to finally determine the category selected.

We know there is no internal list to pick from so there is no default and so therefore it must be what the algorithm is doing and there is a hole there in our knowledge of how it works and what parameters are built in. If we knew that we could probably say do X, Y & Z and the software will go back to selecting what it used to.
