I am taking an online course in computer security. Today's assignment is to check secure sites we use, click on the little padlock icon, and see the security certificate. I did this with several sites and it worked fine. When I got to Moneydance I could find no padlock. When I opened my bank account in the program I still could see no padlock.

While I have always thought that my information is protected why can't I see a padlock? I love and trust your program but would like to learn more about how your security works.

Please enlighten me! How can I tell that my banking information is secure?

Thank you for your time.

    Hi Lewin,

It sounds like you're checking the SSL certificates of various online sites to read about them. Our websites (http://infinitekind.com and http://moneydance.com) currently don't have SSL certificates installed since we don't run any private information over them (our online shopping cart is hosted on a secure shopping cart from our payment processor). Your banking information, however, if you're connecting to any financial institutions through Moneydance, goes directly to your financial institution's server, not through ours, and all of those servers use secure connections (we actually wouldn't support them if they didn't, as it would be insecure). You can view your console logs and see the https URL that Moneydance is connecting to when you download your transactions from your financial institution, though you won't be able to easily check it because it's a special kind of website (an OFX server), so it doesn't respond the same as a standard https website in your browser. You can also check with your financial institution about what kind of security they use for their OFX connection.

I hope that clarifies! Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!
