Hi,

I'm starting to have a problem with my Capital One Banking account not working. The error message is

A communication or parsing error occurred. This could be the result of a network problem, a proxy error, or misconfigured server. Error Description: java.net.UnknownHostException: ofx.capitalone.com

Capital One says there's system is working.

This is for a Capital One bank account, not a Capital One 360 or Credit Card account.

Thank you,
Chris

    Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear of the issue you have encountered when connecting with Capital One. Can you let me know the version of Moneydance you are using? You can check this within Moneydance by navigating to Help --> About Moneydance.

Can you try re-creating your connection with your financial institution and see if that fixes the issue that you're seeing? You will need to disable your current connection to your bank and then recreate it using the New Connection button on the Online Banking Setup screen. To do so, you can follow these steps:

    1. Select your bank account in Moneydance

    2. Select the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu

    3. Click the "Disable" button.  If you don't see a disable button, just close the setup window.

    4. Repeat the previous steps for any additional accounts at the same institution.
    5. Select the Online->Setup Online Banking button/menu (again)

    6. Click the "New Connection" button and select your bank and hit OK
    7. Continue with the setup process, entering your username/password

Make sure you pick new connection, even though your bank is still one of the connection choices after you disable it. Choosing your bank from the list of available banks will force Moneydance to download the updated information, which should then allow you to connect.

Please let me know if you continue to have connection problems after recreating your connection.

After some googling this a bit I discovered that Capital One disables Direct Connect on Dec 19 ( originally scheduled for Dec 15). They will no longer support direct connect. I spoke with them and they confirmed this. They said that customers need to move to “Express Web Connect”. This sucks as it requires your ID and password to be stored on a “Quicken” server. I guess we are screwed.

A Bank forcing customers to give their username and password to a third party, never heard of security have they. In my part of the world the financial institutions specifically tell you to not give your username/password to any third party.

It sounds like a perfect reason to change banks.

This stinks. And changing to a bank that currently supports direct connect is a risk because they could decide not to support direct connect in the future, besides being a pain. I guess I'll have to start doing export/import.

Out of curiosity (and boredom) I did a chat session with a Capital One representative (transcript attached) to see what they know. She says the direct connect was not shut down, only updated. She knows how to make the necessary direct connect update for Quicken users and it involves selecting a new bank name in Quicken (Capital One Bank - New). It also involves some new security feature of a one time PIN being sent. At that point, I didn't bother to get more details about how to make the change in Quicken. I notice there's a Change PIN option in my Settings option on my Capital One Bank accounts, maybe that's how we'd get that, similar to the Access Code we set up in Capital One 360 accounts. I also found a Quicken article about the one time passcode need in Quickbooks, but says to contact a specialist to get the details. I hope someone from InfinteKind will get the official word from Capital One and comment on one of the several posts about this issue.

After expanding the steps at the bottom of the below link, I'm thinking those are the steps the Capital One chat rep would have given me if I were a Quicken users, which includes enrolling in Express Web Connect. So I'm not hopeful Infinite Kind will have any good official news.

ppinocci, thanks for the footwork. I also have a C1 360 account and they have an option to generate a specific password for financial software. That's still working with MoneyDance. Lets hope the Bank does the same. If you've logged in to their website or the app lately, you'll have noticed they're putting everything under the same roof.

Yes, they put them under the same roof but options are still different between the accounts. I have a feeling they will be making the same BAD change to CapitalOne 360 at some point, not the other way around. From the posts from the Quicken community, it looks like they've been working with Quicken on this new security feature, and it has not been going well. Quicken users are angry. The first post below has an "official response" from Quicken that mentions a new API based solution for Capital One next year.

    Hi All,

Sorry for the lack of contact on this thread. I'm afraid I don't have the best news regarding the Capital One connection. From what I'm able to find online, it appears Capital One have taken the decision to discontinue their support for Direct Connect services. This is the only method that Moneydance uses to connect with a bank for automatic downloads.

Capital One have created a connection called 'Capital One Bank - New'. This connection does not support Direct Connect, only Express Web Connect. Although we are looking into implanting other connection types into Moneydance, we will not be implementing this form. This is due to security and you can read ore on the connection methods here.

Although your bank does not support Direct Connect, you should still be able to easily import your data into the program. The best way to get your files into Moneydance is to use a web browser to download them from your bank's web site.
You can download into QFX, OFX, OFC or QIF files (aka Quicken or MS Money files), any of which will import cleanly into Moneydance. You can find the steps for manually importing your data in this article.
You can also open your banks website directly from Moneydance by selecting Online --> Open Account Website, which makes the download process easier.

I wish I had better news to share, especially after the long wait in getting a response from us. I'd like to thank ppinocci for the extensive troubleshooting so far. I'll ensure the Capital One Bank (Not Credit Cards) connection is removed from our supported financial institutions list.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Guess I've never manually downloaded transactions from my C1 bank account before. You have no options. You get the last 100 transactions, or more if you specify. I've been direct connecting always. At least with the credit card you can select a date range, or by statement.
I don't think InfiniteKind will be able to resolve this without using express web connect.
That won't happen, nor do I want it to. It's why I use MoneyDance

Better option might be for a bunch of disgruntled customers to do some complaining.
I didn't see an email address except the abuse one. Can call, chat, or write in.

Thanks Ian, now we know how to work around the issue with Capital One Bank. I appreciated your feedback.

I also agree with Scott M. that Capital One Bank interface for downloading transaction is lacking. But this is not issue with Infinite Kind, its a Capital One issue that needs to be address by them.

I would encourage anybody that used Capital One Bank with Moneydance to contact Capital One to encourage enhancements to the download tool. Really 100 transactions only, not date range. This needs to be fixed by Capital One. I will be complaining for sure because I prefer Moneydance to that other product for management of my finance

It is possible to import CSV date into Bank and Credit Card accounts, depending on what version of Moneydance you have determines the available methods.

Moneydance 2017 saw the inclusion of a CSV Importer:

    http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/online-banking-and-bill-pay/importi...

All versions of Moneydance have a Text File Import Extension available:

    http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/extensions-2/text-file-importer-ext...

There is a third party CSV importer also available:

    https://github.com/stant/mdcsvimporter2015/releases/

The third party extension is the most versatile and flexible solution. There is a pointer to some docs near the bottom of the referred to page.

Capital One Bank supports CSV, QFX and QBO file types when downloading transactions. I use the QFX format and use notepad to edit out the transactions that are already in my register before doing the import. I wasn't sure what would happen if I tried importing transactions that were already there and didn't want to take a chance in having to delete duplicates. It's not that difficult, you just have to be careful to leave the header and footer intact. All of the transactions begin with <STMTTRN> and end with </STMTTRN>.

    dwg's Avatar

QFX/OFX is by far the best format to use.

If Capital One have done it correctly there should not be any duplicates, if they have not ....

Many banks allow you to date limit what is to be downloaded thud allowing you to ensure you do not get any duplicates in the first place.

    Hi:

Well, that is all fine and dandy. But the ONLY selection for download from Capital One is csv.

And when I try “File/Import” per your prior message, Moneydance crashes immediately when I try to select a folder from which to upload the csv file.

    Just wonderful.
