MD Rocks
I've been using MD for nearly 3 years now and it has met all my needs (and I am needy). As I have been preparing for retirement, I felt I needed a full and comprehensive understanding of my expenses and to also have confidence I know how my money is working for me in investments.
I can say that MD has given me added confidence in the financial aspect of my retirement.
I've tried other financial programs in the past and grew frustrated with the bloated aspects of the programs and the required cloud-based approach. MD is the right mix of total control of personal data and lean presentation while at the same time providing extensibility allowing for added features which may appeal to some by choice.
I thought I'd try to list some of the features I particularly find useful to me:
- First and foremost is the fact I can use MD exclusively on my local machine with no data stored anywhere but on my machine.
- I love the "single-click" UI concept which is hard to explain but essentially minimizes clicking to get to the data I want to see. (Note a double-click opens a separate window.)
- The auto-update of all related views - if I have two views (windows) open and I perform a transaction in one which affects the other, the dependent view is instantaneously updated - this may seem trivial but it is very reassuring to know whatever view I'm looking at is always current.
- It's extensibility is straight-forward. I've been able to create and integrate my own extensions (in Java) and have found the API documents to be mostly adequate.
- Stability - In my entire usage of the program over nearly three years I do not recall MD ever crashing/locking up or producing inconsistent/incorrect results. I've never seen data corruption after such events as sudden power-loss.
- The Find/Replace is excellent (although I wonder why it's an "extension") and has encouraged me to add keywords to transactions. "How much has the water bill been for the last 2 years?" - within seconds I have an answer.
- The quote loader does its job and I rely on this a great deal. It too is an extension; the quick response to the recent yahoo api changes (which disrupted its functionality) demonstrates the reliability of the support team and key contributors.
- Backup is a clear and simple operation.
- Double-entry accounting - this may be a common approach to all financial programs (although I have reason to believe that it is not the case) - when encountering this term in the docs and when programming my extensions I did have to learn this concept but it now makes perfect sense and thereby maximizes available information and minimizes the chance of error or inaccuracy.
- ... to be continued.
I recommend MD to friends and family whenever I get the chance.
