Find and Replace Extension
Hi,
after downloading several years of bank transactions into a new database I needed to categorize all those transactions. I first started with the build-in search function, but this did not work for me, as I also needed a "replacement" function for categories and accounts.
I found the Find and Replace extension, downloaded it and WOW, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you VERY, VERY MUCH for providing this extension, which was a life saver for me. It has so much functionality build in already, and it make my search and replace very easy.
But by categorizing all my transactions, I also wanted to make a suggestion for an improvement. I also have transactions going to different accounts, but this option is not available in the Replace section.
You might want to consider adding this in the future.
After I have several other bank and retirement accounts I need to add and categorize, I could use this function often.
Thanks again for providing this extension, and also thanks for providing Moneydance. Its a great software for our personal finances.

An option in the Replacement section would be to change the Category value to Category and Accounts, and allow other accounts to be selected as well.
Or if programming is easier, add an additional optional selection for account replacements.

Hi Gerd,
If you tick the 'Include Transfers' checkbox at the bottom left-hand corner of the 'Replace' section of F&R, it should then include Accounts in the 'Category' field drop-down list.
Also, as you may have already discovered the 'User Guide' link is dead.
The developer of F&R (Menne Software Solutions) has since stopped supporting the extension.
You can get a somewhat crippled version of the user guide from Wayback here:

I've pulled the various pieces together and created the attached PDF of the manual for anyone interested.

This is an excellent extension, and it sure saved me many hours after downloading several years of bank transactions.
I have additional bank account I need to setup, thus, will use this extension again (and again).
Thank you very much creating it, and thank you very much for providing the PDF.

I have one additional question about using this extension.
I use the find with some criteria. I get the results. But instead of using the replace function I just double click the transaction, which shows me the transaction in my bank account. However, it opens a copy of my bank account each time I double click a transaction in the results sections.
I assume this is a MD issue, but was wondering why MD does that. I just updated about 50 transactions from the results screen and had 50 copies of the bank account open. It does not seem to cause any issues, but it takes a bit longer to close MD.

Hi Gerd,
Drill-down (double clicking to open the transaction) is a feature. I don't know of any way to suppress it.
Key-combo CTRL-W will close any drill-down window but will not close the main Moneydance window.

That's what I thought, Kevin.
And after I use the Replace very often, I would like to suggest a small improvement to the result screen category..
I use one sub-categories in nearly every main category, but only the sub-category is displayed on the result screen. Would it be possible to display the complete category?

Well, just found that there is a mouse-over that shows the complete category, and all other details of a transaction. This sure helps, but I still think after using the find it would be helpful to display the complete category.

I sure love your extension!!! Was working till late night yesterday and then again from early morning.
One more suggestion I have on the results screen: add the memo field.
In lots or our bank transactions we have values in the memo field that I use to determine what category to use.
